RESUMO

Uranium groundwater contamination due to U mining and processing affects numerous sites globally. Bioreduction of soluble, mobile U(VI) to U(IV)-bearing solids is potentially a very effective remediation strategy. Uranium isotopes (238U/235U) have been utilized to track the progress of microbial reduction, with laboratory and field studies finding a ∼1‰ isotopic fractionation, with the U(IV) product enriched in 238U. However, the isotopic fractionation produced by adsorption may complicate the use of 238U/235U to trace microbial reduction. A previous study found that adsorption of U(VI) onto Mn oxides produced a -0.2‰ fractionation with the adsorbed U(VI) depleted in 238U. In this study, adsorption to quartz, goethite, birnessite, illite, and aquifer sediments induced an average isotopic fractionation of -0.15‰ with the adsorbed U(VI) isotopically lighter than coexisting aqueous U(VI). In bicarbonate-bearing matrices, the fractionation depended little on the nature of the sorbent, with only birnessite producing an atypically large fractionation. In the case of solutions with ionic strengths much lower than those of typical groundwater, less isotopic fractionation was produced than U(VI) solutions with greater ionic strength. Studies using U isotope data to assess U(VI) reduction must consider adsorption as a lesser, but significant isotope fractionation process.

RESUMO

We investigate the effect of noise loading in a hybrid phase-sensitive amplifier system, analyzing the effect of noise beating between the signal and idler waves coupled in a parametric amplifier. Through analyzing input and output optical signal to noise ratios, we find that system performance of a phase-sensitive amplifier is 3 to 6 dB improved over a phase-insensitive amplifier, depending on the ratio of loaded noise power to that of vacuum fluctuations.

For the first time to our knowledge, the noise performance of a frequency nondegenerate phase-sensitive amplifier (PSA) with unequalized input powers has been experimentally characterized, based on a fiber-based parametric copier-PSA scheme. Two different noise-figure (NF) definitions-separate and combined NFs-are provided and compared. The results show that the separate NF of the weaker input wave is lower than that of the stronger wave due to the correlated-light nature. When considering the combined NF, the optimal noise performance (0 dB NF) is obtained only when the input powers are equal. Experiments agree well with the theoretical predictions.

The phenomenon of thermal diffusion (mass diffusion driven by a temperature gradient, known as the Ludwig-Soret effect) has been investigated for over 150 years, but an understanding of its underlying physical basis remains elusive. A significant hurdle in studying thermal diffusion has been the difficulty of characterizing it. Extensive experiments over the past century have established that the Soret coefficient, S(T) (a single parameter that describes the steady-state result of thermal diffusion), is highly sensitive to many factors. This sensitivity makes it very difficult to obtain a robust characterization of thermal diffusion, even for a single material. Here we show that for thermal diffusion experiments that span a wide range in composition and temperature, the difference in S(T) between isotopes of diffusing elements that are network modifiers (iron, calcium and magnesium) is independent of the composition and temperature. On the basis of this finding, we propose an additive decomposition for the functional form of S(T) and argue that a theoretical approach based on local thermodynamic equilibrium holds promise for describing thermal diffusion in silicate melts and other complex solutions. Our results lead to a simple and robust framework for characterizing isotope fractionation by thermal diffusion in natural and synthetic systems.

PURPOSE: To compare three methods for standardizing volume rendering technique (VRT) protocols by studying aortic diameter measurements in magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) datasets. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Datasets from 20 patients previously examined with gadolinium-enhanced MRA and with digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for abdominal aortic aneurysm were retrospectively evaluated by three independent readers. The MRA datasets were viewed using VRT with three different standardized transfer functions: the percentile method (Pc-VRT), the maximum-likelihood method (ML-VRT), and the partial range histogram method (PRH-VRT). The aortic diameters obtained with these three methods were compared with freely chosen VRT parameters (F-VRT) and with maximum intensity projection (MIP) concerning inter-reader variability and agreement with the reference method DSA. RESULTS: F-VRT parameters and PRH-VRT gave significantly higher diameter values than DSA, whereas Pc-VRT gave significantly lower values than DSA. The highest interobserver variability was found for F-VRT parameters and MIP, and the lowest for Pc-VRT and PRH-VRT. All standardized VRT methods were significantly superior to both MIP and F-VRT in this respect. The agreement with DSA was best for PRH-VRT, which was the only method with a mean error below 1 mm and which also had the narrowest limits of agreement (95% of cases between 2.1 mm below and 3.1 mm above DSA). CONCLUSION: All the standardized VRT methods compare favorably with MIP and VRT with freely selected parameters as regards interobserver variability. The partial range histogram method, although systematically overestimating vessel diameters, gives results closest to those of DSA.

RESUMO

Osteoma cutis, also called cutaneous ossification, refers to the rare occurrence of bone in the skin. It may be primary, occurring in normal skin, or secondary, occurring in disrupted skin tissue. A 42-year-old white woman presented with long-standing progressive primary osteoma cutis involving her head and neck, trunk and extremities. She had craniofacial dysmorphism with mid-face hypoplasia, including saddle nose deformity, mild to moderate generalized joint hypermobility, extensive paravertebral ossification, and disc space calcification. The differential diagnosis for this entity is presented. This phenotype may be a previously undescribed syndrome.

We have investigated the proliferative response of thymocytes from different mouse strains to cytokines in vitro. Interleukin 2 (IL-2), IL-4 and IL-7 induced proliferation of thymocytes from NMRI/KI (a locally bred NMRI mouse strain), NMRI/H ('traditional' NMRI mice), C3H/HeJ and C3H/HeN mice. NMRI/KI thymocytes showed the most prominent proliferation in response to IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta. IL-3, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), interferon gamma (IFN-gamma), inhibin and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced no thymocyte proliferation. Germfree NMRI/KI mouse thymocytes showed a significantly lower proliferation in response to IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta than conventional mice. Rat tissues, previously shown to contain lymphocyte activating factors (LAFs), were also tested. Skin, tongue, esophagus, proventricular stomach, testis and placenta were all positive in the LAF assay utilizing NMRI/KI thymocytes, whereas none of the tissue extracts could induce proliferation in NMRI/H thymocytes. The higher cytokine responsiveness in conventional mice compared with germfree might suggest that exposure to microflora induces a higher state of activation of the immune system. The LAF assay, utilizing NMRI/KI thymocytes, is a highly sensitive IL-1 bioassay with a detection level of 1 pg/ml for IL-1 beta and 2 pg/ml for IL-1 alpha. The specificity of the assay is increased by utilizing NMRI/H mice to exclude the presence of IL-2, IL-4 and IL-7.
