Objective: To explore the clinical application value of routine indicators such as blood routine and liver and kidney function in auxiliary diagnosis and prognosis of COVID-19 patients. Methods: SNK-q and other methods were used to retrospectively analyzed the differences of blood routine test, liver and kidney function and other inflammatory indexes of 30 patients with covid-19, 29 patients with other viral pneumonia, 35 patients with influenza A/B and 25 healthy persons from January 28 to February 14, 2020 in Xiangya Hospital of Central South University. Results: The neutrophils count increased gradually in COVID-19 group, influenza A/B group and other types of viral pneumonia group, and the difference between COVID-19 group and other viral pneumonia groups was statistically significant(H=-19.064,P<0.05); The lymphocyte count decreased gradually in the control group, influenza A/B group, other viral pneumonia group and COVID-19 group. In addition, DB, UA and GLU were also different among groups. Subgroup analysis showed that there were statistically significant differences in N(F=9.581,t=-0.152,P<0.05), N%(F=5.723,t=-0.600, P<0.05), NLR(F=4.773, t=-1.161, P<0.05), PCT(F=17.464, t=-1.477, P<0.05)and CRP(F=7.656, t=-1.973, P<0.05) between patients with lung involvement +-++ and patients with lung involvement +++-++++. There were statistically significant differences in NLR(F=63.931, t=-2.815, P<0.01), AST(F=15.704, t=-1.930, P<0.01), ALT(F=35.551, t=-2.199, P<0.01), LDH(F=7.715, t=-2.703, P<0.05) and GLU(F=6.306, t=-5.116, P<0.05) between the light+common subgroup and the heavy+critical subgroup of COVID-19 clinical classification. Correlation analysis showed that clinical stage and imaging credit period were significantly correlated with NLR (r=0.406, P=0.026; r=0.397, P=0.030), ALT (r=0.403, P=0.049; r=0.418, P=0.047), LDH (r=0.543, P<0.01; r=0.643, P<0.01) and GLU(r=0.750, P<0.01; r=0.471, P=0.042). A total of 5 principal components were extracted from all the included indicators, and the comprehensive information extraction rate was 82.86%. Indicators of a large load included Ur, PCT and CRP in PC1; ALT, AST and GLU in PC2; N%, L%, L and NLR in PC3. It indicated that the indicators of acute infection, liver function and blood routine had certein warning effect on disease surveillance. The results of ROC curve analysis showed that the combined detection of N+TB+Urea was the best practice to distinguish COVID-19 and other viral pneumonia, while the combined detection of N+L+UA was the most effective solution to make a distinction between COVID-19 and influenza A/B patients. In the aspect of disease evaluation, NL+LDH+GLU+ALT combined detection represent the best diagnostic performance to distinguish the clinical stage of light+common type and heavy+critical type, achieving the AUC (ROC) to 0.904, with the sensitivity 75% and the specificity 100% at the cut-off value of 0.477. Conclusion: In addition to etiology and imaging examination, doctors can also improve the routine laboratory tests such as blood routine test, liver and kidney function to assist diagnosis and disease prediction of patients with respiratory tract infection.

Conyza sumatrensis (Asteraceae), an annual or biennial plant, is native to North and South America. It is an invasive, noxious weed that is widespread in southern and southeastern China. It invades farm land and causes great losses to dry land crops, including wheat, corn, and beans. It also reduces biological diversity by crowding out native plants in the infested areas (3,4). During a search for fungal pathogens that could serve as potential biological control agents of C. sumatrensis, a leaf spot disease was observed in 2010 in Chongqing, China. An isolate (SMBC22) of a highly virulent fungus was obtained from diseased leaves. Pathogenicity tests were performed by placing 6-mm-diameter mycelial disks of 7-day-old potato dextrose agar (PDA) cultures of SMBC22 on leaves of 15 healthy greenhouse-grown plants of C. sumatrensis; the same number of control plants was treated with sterile PDA disks. Treated plants were covered with plastic bags for 24 h and maintained in a growth chamber with daily average temperatures of 24 to 26°C, continuous light (3,100 lux), and high relative humidity (>90%). Lesions similar to those observed in the field were first obvious on the SMBC22-inoculated leaves 3 days after inoculation. Symptoms became severe 7 to 9 days after inoculation. Control plants remained healthy. The fungus was reisolated from inoculated and diseased leaves and it was morphologically the same as SMBC22. The pathogenicity test was conducted three times. A survey of 10 southern and southeastern Chinese provinces revealed that the disease was widespread and it attacked leaves and stems of seedlings and mature plants of C. sumatrensis. Lesions on leaves were initially small, circular, and water soaked. The typical lesion was ovoid or fusiform, dark brown, and surrounded by a yellow halo. The spots coalesced to form large lesions and plants were often completely blighted. Fungal colonies of SMBC22 on PDA plates were initially white and turned dark gray. Colonies were circular with smooth edges with obvious rings of pycnidia on the surface. Aerial hyphae were short and dense. Pycnidia, black and immersed or semi-immersed in the medium, were visible after 12 days of incubation. Pycnidia were 72 to 140 µm in diameter. Conidia were produced in the pycnidia and were hyaline, unicellular, ellipsoidal, and 4.4 to 6.1 × 1.6 to 2.2 µm. To confirm identification of the fungus, genomic DNA was extracted from mycelia of a 7-day-old culture on PDA at 25°C (2). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) gene of rDNA was amplified using primers ITS4/ITS5. The gene sequence was 524 bp long and registered in NCBI GenBank (No. HQ645974). BLAST analysis showed that the current sequence had 99% homology to an isolate of Phoma macrostoma (DQ 404792) from Cirsium arvense (Canada thistle) in Canada and reported to cause chlorotic symptoms on that host plant (1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. macrostoma causing disease on C. sumatrensis in China. P. macrostoma, thought of as a biocontrol agent of broadleaf weeds in Canada, has been patented in the United States. A simple, rapid and cost-effective method has been established for the determination of the quantity of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), one of the most carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), in roasted, smoked and charcoal grilled foods. Second-derivative constant-energy synchronous fluorescence spectrometry (DCESFS) improves the spectral resolution and selectivity of the fluorescence method. By using this method, processed meat, fish and some other food samples were analysed without resorting to complex pre-separation and purification procedures. The method was found to have a recovery of 97.7% ± 4.3%. The limit of detection (LOD) for BaP was 0.14 µg kg⁻¹, far below the regulatory limit (1.0 µg kg⁻¹) for BaP in food samples specified by the European Union. A certified reference material (Coconut oil, BCR®-458) was used to confirm the validity of the proposed method. The results suggest that the measurements are in a good agreement with the certified BaP concentrations (5.4% deviation). The results obtained by the proposed method for analysing BaP in food samples correlated well with those obtained by GC/MS.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is a debilitating complication of cardiac surgery. Many intraoperative and postoperative factors predict the likelihood of post-cardiac surgery stroke. We evaluated preoperative parameters, seeking correlations with adverse neurological outcome following cardiac surgery. We investigated the possibility of preoperative carotid ultrasonography to select patients for carotid endarterectomy pre- or intraoperatively. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 61 patients who suffered stroke post-cardiac surgery from 2003 to 2006. Data was collected for patient and disease characteristics, preoperative status, intraoperative events and postoperative course. Postoperative neurological complications were subdivided into three groups: mild/temporary events, moderate events such as seizures, and severe events such as stroke. A mild/temporary event was defined as a focal neurological deficit of less than 24 hours in duration. RESULTS: A total of 2,226 cardiac cases were retrospectively evaluated. The frequency of stroke was 61 patients (2.7 percent). The mean age of these patients was 63.7 +/- 7.4 years, and 40 (65.6 percent) were males. Logistic EuroSCORE, left ventricular ejection fraction (as determined by two-dimensional echocardiogram) and aortic cross-clamp time were significantly correlated with postoperative neurological complications, with a p-value of less than 0.05 for all subgroups. There was a significant correlation between the presence of preoperative carotid disease (as proven by pre- and postoperative carotid ultrasonography) and postoperative neurological events (p-value equals 0.033). However, atrial fibrillation did not correlate with postoperative stroke. CONCLUSION: The stage of cardiac disease (risk factor level, ejection fraction and presence of carotid stenosis) correlates with stroke and may predict an adverse neurological outcome.

AIM: To determine the association of spherical equivalent (SE) with low uncorrected visual acuity (VA) along with a proposed definition for myopia using logMAR VA >0.3 as the criteria. METHODS: 1334 Chinese schoolchildren (mean age 7.8; range 7-9 years) were enrolled in the study after those who had hyperopia > or =+2.00 dioptres (D) and astigmatism > = -2.00 D were excluded. Uncorrected logMAR VA was measured for both eyes. Cycloplegia autorefraction was achieved by the instillation of three drops of 1% cyclopentolate 5 minutes apart. The average of five successful consecutive refraction and keratometry readings were obtained with calibrated Canon RK5 autokeratorefractometers by well trained optometry students, at least 30 minutes after the instillation of the third drop of cyclopentolate. SE cut-off points (-0.25 D, -0.5D, -0.75 D, -1.0 D) were evaluated. RESULTS: Using different SE cut-off points, the myopia prevalence rates of this sample of schoolchildren varied from 45.8% (SE at least -0.25 D) to 30.7% (SE at least -1.0 D). The cut-off point of > or =-0.75 D had a sensitivity and specificity of 91.8% (95% CI, 89.2 to 94.4) and 93.7% (95% CI, 92.1 to 95.3), respectively, to predict low vision defined as uncorrected logMAR VA > 0.3 (either eye). The next best cut-off point of -0.5D had a higher sensitivity (93.3%), but lower specificity (87.9%). CONCLUSIONS: The cut-off points of -0.75D and -0.5D in SE refraction are appropriate for the prediction of uncorrected logMAR VA worse than 0.3, which is the criterion for the US common state adult driver licensing standard.

INTRODUCTION: Off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCABG) is gaining widespread acceptance as the preferred choice for myocardial revascularisation. However, no definite data exist as to whether it is better than conventional CABG. We aimed to study the efficacy of the procedure in our patients, which constituted of a predominantly Asian population. METHODS: Between January 2000 and December 2002, 1062 patients underwent isolated coronary artery bypass in our institution. 184 patients (17.3 percent) underwent OPCABG. Patients were preoperatively prospectively risk stratified under the EuroSCORE risk assessment model under high, medium and low risk classes thereby making them comparable. Post-operative complications, intensive care unit stay, hospital stay, types of grafts done were then analysed in these different risk classes. RESULTS: The incidence of off-pump procedures showed a gradual increase over the last three years in this institution. A reduction in the number of post-operative complications, hospital stay, intensive care unit stay and mortality in the off-pump group was observed. Certain differences were found to be statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Off-pump CABG is a safe and viable alternative to conventional CABG as a treatment modality for surgical coronary revascularisation.
