RESUMO

This study attempts to reveal antioxidants in the plant parts of Myxopyrum smilacifolium (Wall.) Blume using antioxidant assays and LC-MS/MS analysis. Methanol is the most effective solvent for collecting antioxidants. The roots-derived methanol extract demonstrates the greatest antioxidant activity, corresponding to the extremely low IC50 values of 16.39 µg/mL and 19.80 µg/mL for DPPH and ABTS radicals, respectively. The high phenolic and flavonoid contents are the primary reason for outstanding total antioxidant capacity (TAC; i.e. 247.73 ± 1.62 mg GA/g or 163.93 ± 0.83 mg AS/g) of the root extract. LC-MS/MS quantification of five phenolic compounds reveals exceptionally high amounts of quercetin and luteolin in the root extract, ranging from 238.86 ± 5.74 to 310.99 ± 1.44 µg/g and from 201.49 ± 7.84 to 234.10 ± 2.54 µg/g, respectively, in the root-derived methanol extract. The achievement highlights M. smilacifolium as a promising source of natural antioxidants for large-scale medical applications.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Understanding smokers' purchasing patterns can aid in customizing tobacco control initiatives aimed at reducing the tobacco smoking prevalence. Therefore, this study identified cigarette purchase behavior among Vietnamese male smokers and associated demographic and consumption factors. METHODS: We analyzed a secondary dataset of male current tobacco smokers (n=3983) who participated in the Vietnam Global Adult Tobacco Survey in 2015. We applied the latent class analysis (LCA) to identify the classes of purchase behavior among cigarette smokers (n=1241). Multinomial logistic regression was performed to identify demographics (education level, ethnicity, partnership status, and household socioeconomic status) and cigarette consumption variables (smoking years and heavy smoking status) related to purchase behavior classes. The results are reported as an adjusted relative risk ratio (ARRR). RESULTS: The LCA identified four cigarette purchase behaviors classes: Class 1 (price-insensitive and purchased international brand: 44.4%), Class 2 (price-sensitive and purchased domestic brand: 27.6%), Class 3 (price-sensitive and purchased cigarettes in a street vendor: 18.6%), and Class 4: price-sensitive and purchased loose/carton cigarette: 9.4%). The poorer economic groups were more likely to belong to the three price-sensitive classes. Heavy smokers and those who had smoked for a longer period were more likely to belong to Class 3 (ARRR=2.33; 95% CI: 1.51-3.58 and ARRR=1.02; 95% CI: 1.001-1.05, respectively) and Class 4 (ARRR=2.94; 95% CI: 1.71-5.06 and ARRR=1.05; 95% CI: 1.02-1.08, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Varied purchasing behaviors among male cigarette smokers, influenced by divergent price sensitivities and economic backgrounds, underscore the need for comprehensive tobacco control. Future efforts should include targeted policy interventions, behavior modification, and reshaping social norms.

RESUMO

Background: Secondhand smoke (SHS) has detrimental effects on community health, including coronary heart diseases, stroke, lung cancer etc. This manuscript exploited data from the Vietnam Population-based Provincial Global Adult Tobacco Survey (PGATS) in 2022 to update the prevalence of adult exposure to SHS and associated socio-demographic factors. Methods: With the sample size of 71,981 adults aged 15+ throughout 30 provinces and cities in Vietnam, data was collected using the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) questionnaire. Bivariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression modelling were performed. Results: In the past 30 days, 44.4% (95% CI: 44.0%-44.9%) adults aged 15+ exposed to SHS at home while 23.1% (95% CI: 22.6%-23.6%) exposed to SHS at work. Female exposure to SHS in the past 30 days was higher at homes but lower at indoor workplaces. Participants aged 15-24 were likely to have higher odds of SHS exposure in the past 30 days to other age groups. Those living in the urban areas had 1.15 times higher odds (95% CI: 1.08-1.22) of exposure to SHS than those in the rural areas. Current smokers tended to have 2.2 times higher odds of exposure to SHS at the indoor workplaces compared to non-smokers (95% CI: 2.05-2.37). Conclusions: The prevalence of exposure to SHS at home was still relatively high amongst the adult population. While there was a significant reduction of SHS exposure at indoor workplaces, there was a higher prevalence of women being exposed to SHS at home. The Government of Vietnam should continue to strictly implement the smoke-free environment resolution at indoor workplaces and appropriate communication campaigns to protect people, especially women from SHS exposure at homes.

RESUMO

Malnutrition is a common problem among hemodialysis patients that increases morbidity and mortality and decreases the quality of life. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of malnutrition and associated factors and survey the consumption of energy and several nutrients among hemodialysis patients. A prospective observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted on 76 patients on hemodialysis therapy at Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, for 2 months (from May to July 2022). Dialysis malnutrition score was used to determine patients' nutritional status. Data about their biochemical parameters were retrieved from records with the newest results. Among the 76 patients, 38 (50.0%) were female. The mean age of the patients was 55.0 ±â€…13.5 years. Based on the dialysis malnutrition score, 56 (73.7%) patients had mild to moderate malnutrition, while 2 (2.6%) had severe malnutrition. The average energy intake was 21.5 kcal/kg/day, with only 3.9% meeting the recommended intake. The average protein intake was 1.0 g/kg/day, and about 10.5% of participants complied with the recommended protein level. In addition, the majority of patients did not reach the recommendations for sodium (56.6%), potassium (88.2%), phosphate (75.0%), and calcium (82.9%). We found a significant association between patients' occupation (P < .05), dialysis vintage (P < .001), and malnutrition status. Malnutrition is widespread among Vietnamese hemodialysis patients, which necessitates regular assessment and monitoring. We recommend paying more attention to the nutritional status of patients who are unemployed, retired, or stopped working and those with ≥ 5 years of hemodialysis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Arabidopsis DA1 gene is a key player in the regulation of organ and seed development. To extend our understanding of its functional counterparts in rice, this study investigates the roles of orthologous genes, namely DA1, HDR3, HDR3.1, and the DA2 ortholog GW2, through the analysis of T-DNA insertion mutants. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this research is to elucidate the impact of T-DNA insertions in DA1, HDR3, HDR3.1, and GW2 on agronomic traits in rice. By evaluating homozygous plants, we specifically focus on key parameters such as plant height, tiller number, days to heading, and grain size. METHODS: T-DNA insertion locations were validated using PCR, and subsequent analyses were conducted on homozygous plants. Agronomic traits, including plant height, tiller number, days to heading, and grain size, were assessed. Additionally, leaf senescence assays were performed under dark incubation conditions to gauge the impact of T-DNA insertions on this physiological aspect. RESULTS: The study revealed distinctive phenotypic outcomes associated with T-DNA insertions in HDR3, HDR3.1, GW2, and DA1. Specifically, HDR3 and HDR3.1 mutants exhibited significantly reduced plant height and smaller grain size, while GW2 and DA1 mutants displayed a notable increase in both plant height and grain size compared to the wild type variety Dongjin. Leaf senescence assays further indicated delayed leaf senescence in hdr3.1 mutants, contrasting with slightly earlier leaf senescence observed in hdr3 mutants under dark incubation. CONCLUSIONS: The findings underscore the pivotal roles of DA1 orthologous genes in rice, shedding light on their significance in regulating plant growth and development. The observed phenotypic variations highlight the potential of these genes as targets for crop improvement strategies, offering insights that could contribute to the enhancement of agronomic traits in rice and potentially other crops.

RESUMO

Background: The use of omics data for monitoring the microbial flow of fresh meat products along a production line and the development of spoilage prediction tools from these data is a promising but challenging task. In this context, we produced a large multivariate dataset (over 600 samples) obtained on the production lines of two similar types of fresh meat products (poultry and raw pork sausages). We describe a full analysis of this dataset in order to decipher how the spoilage microbial ecology of these two similar products may be shaped differently depending on production parameter characteristics. Methods: Our strategy involved a holistic approach to integrate unsupervised and supervised statistical methods on multivariate data (OTU-based microbial diversity; metabolomic data of volatile organic compounds; sensory measurements; growth parameters), and a specific selection of potential uncontrolled (initial microbiota composition) or controlled (packaging type; lactate concentration) drivers. Results: Our results demonstrate that the initial microbiota, which is shown to be very different between poultry and pork sausages, has a major impact on the spoilage scenarios and on the effect that a downstream parameter such as packaging type has on the overall evolution of the microbial community. Depending on the process, we also show that specific actions on the pork meat (such as deboning and defatting) elicit specific food spoilers such as Dellaglioa algida, which becomes dominant during storage. Finally, ecological network reconstruction allowed us to map six different metabolic pathways involved in the production of volatile organic compounds involved in spoilage. We were able connect them to the different bacterial actors and to the influence of packaging type in an overall view. For instance, our results demonstrate a new role of Vibrionaceae in isopropanol production, and of Latilactobacillus fuchuensis and Lactococcus piscium in methanethiol/disylphide production. We also highlight a possible commensal behavior between Leuconostoc carnosum and Latilactobacillus curvatus around 2,3-butanediol metabolism. Conclusion: We conclude that our holistic approach combined with large-scale multi-omic data was a powerful strategy to prioritize the role of production parameters, already known in the literature, that shape the evolution and/or the implementation of different meat spoilage scenarios.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nearly one-in-two Vietnamese men smoke cigarettes placing them among the highest tobacco consumers in the world. Despite the need for smoking cessation to curb the burden of tobacco-related diseases in Vietnam, this rate remains at less than 30%. Therefore, this study examines individual-, social- and policy factors associated with smoking cessation among adult male smokers in Vietnam. METHODS: We established a longitudinal International Tobacco Control study of male smokers in Hanoi, Vietnam, in September 2018. This paper analyses 1525 men who participated in baseline and one-year follow-up. We applied a weighted multivariable logistic regression to examine the association between smoking cessation and individual-, social- and policy predictors. RESULTS: At follow-up, 14.8% of participants had quit smoking for at least 30 consecutive days during the last year. Among the persistent smokers, 56.6% expressed intention to quit smoking. Factors associated with smoking cessation included a lower number of cigarettes smoked per day (aOR = 0.96, 95% CI: 0.94, 0.99) and having several attempts to quit smoking (aOR = 2.16, 95% CI 1.13, 4.12). Intention to quit smoking was associated with multiple quit attempts, a chronic condition diagnosis, more tobacco-related knowledge, greater self-efficacy, and more worries about their future health. The perceived impact of smoke-free policy and health warning labels were positively associated with intention to quit at any stage. CONCLUSIONS: Interventions aimed at increasing smoking cessation should focus on all aspects of individual, social, and policy factors. Persistent smokers are more motivated to quit if they have made multiple quit attempts, more self-efficacy of quitting and worried about their future health, indicating that increasing smokers' beliefs and knowledge may be important for behavioural change. Health warning labels and tobacco taxation policies should be maintained and promoted as they are perceived to be particularly useful for persistent smokers' intention to quit.

RESUMO

In this study, nanocomposite film was fabricated using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as nanofiller in a polymer matrix of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and gum tragacanth (GT) via solution casting. CNCs were extracted from sugarcane bagasse using a steam explosion technique followed by acid hydrolysis. Initial analysis of CNCs by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed nanosized particles of 104 nm in length and 7 nm in width. Physical and chemical characteristics of neat PVA, PVA/GT, and PVA/GT/CNC films with varying concentrations of CNCs (from 2% to 10%) were analyzed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry, mechanical test, and swelling test. The SEM analysis showed cluster formation of CNCs in the polymer matrix at high concentration. The developed films were transparent. FTIR spectrometry analysis confirmed the chemical functional groups of the various components in the film. The presence of GT and CNCs in the polymer matrix improved the characteristics of films as evident in the prolonged stability for 7 days and increased mechanical properties. The highest elastic modulus of 1526.11 ± 31.86 MPa and tensile strength of 80.39 MPa were recorded in PVA/GT/CNC2 film. The swelling ability, however, decreased from 260% to 230%. Cytotoxicity analysis of the PVA/GT/CNC film showed that it is nontoxic to mouse fibroblast cells L929 with 95% cell viability. Films loaded with betel leaf extract exhibited excellent antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus DMST 8840 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa TISTR 781 with 28.20 ± 0.84 mm and 23.60 ± 0.55 mm inhibition zones, respectively. These results demonstrate that PVA/GT/CNC loaded with the betel leaf extract could act as promising and versatile wound dressings to protect the wound surface from infection and dehydration.

RESUMO

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, several contamination clusters were reported in food-processing plants in France and several countries worldwide. Therefore, a need arose to better understand viral transmission in such occupational environments from multiple perspectives: the protection of workers in hotspots of viral circulation; the prevention of supply disruption due to the closure of plants; and the prevention of cluster expansion due to exports of food products contaminated by the virus to other locations. This paper outlines a simulation-based approach (using agent-based models) to study the effects of measures taken to prevent the contamination of workers, surfaces, and food products. The model includes user-defined parameters to integrate characteristics relating to SARS-CoV-2 (variant of concern to be considered, symptom onset…), food-processing plants (dimensions, ventilation…), and other sociodemographic transmission factors based on laboratory experiments as well as industrial and epidemiological investigations. Simulations were performed for a typical meat-processing plant in different scenarios for illustration purposes. The results suggested that increasing the mask-wearing ratio led to great reductions in the probability of observing clusters of more than 25 infections. In the case of clusters, masks being worn by all workers limited the presence of contamination (defined as levels of at least 5 log10 viral RNA copies) on meat cuts at less than 0.05 % and maintained the production capacity of the plant at optimal levels. Increasing the average distance between two workers from less than 1 m to more than 2 m decreased the cluster-occurrence probability by up to 15 % as well as contamination of food products during cluster situations. The developed approach can open up several perspectives in terms of potential communication-support tools for the agri-food sector and further reuses or adaptations for other hazards and occupational environments.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the updated smoking cessation and quit attempt rates and associated factors among Vietnamese adults in 2020. METHODS: Data on tobacco use among adults in Vietnam in 2020 was derived from the Provincial Global Adult Tobacco Survey. The participants in the study were people aged 15 and older. A total of 81,600 people were surveyed across 34 provinces and cities. Multi-level logistic regression was used to examine the associations between individual and province-level factors on smoking cessation and quit attempts. RESULTS: The smoking cessation and quit attempt rates varied significantly across the 34 provinces. The average rates of people who quit smoking and attempted to quit were 6.3% and 37.2%, respectively. The factors associated with smoking cessation were sex, age group, region, education level, occupation, marital status, and perception of the harmful effects of smoking. Attempts to quit were significantly associated with sex, education level, marital status, perception of the harmful effects of smoking, and visiting health facilities in the past 12 months. CONCLUSIONS: These results may be useful in formulating future smoking cessation policies and identifying priority target groups for future interventions. However, more longitudinal and follow-up studies are needed to prove a causal relationship between these factors and future smoking cessation behaviors.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Palliative care remains largely inaccessible in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and efforts to increase access are impeded by lack of training of proven effectiveness for physicians. OBJECTIVES: To measure the effectiveness of palliative care training for Vietnamese physicians. METHODS: The palliative care-related knowledge, attitudes, and self-assessment of Vietnamese physicians were studied prior to a basic course in palliative care (baseline), just after the physicians completed the course (post), and 6-18 months later (follow-up). RESULTS: The self-assessment scores and knowledge scores increased significantly from baseline to post and decreased significantly from post to follow-up, but the follow-up scores remained significantly higher than baseline. There were significant interactions between changes over time of the knowledge scores and baseline age, degree, years of graduation, training, type of work, and whether participants had ever prescribed morphine for pain. Medically appropriate attitudes increased significantly from baseline to post and did not decrease significantly from post to follow-up. CONCLUSION: Our basic palliative care course in Vietnam resulted in significant and enduring improvements among physicians in palliative care-related knowledge, attitudes, and self-assessed competence. To respond to the enormous unmet need for palliative care in LMICs, primary care providers and physician-specialists in many fields, among others, should receive palliative care training of proven effectiveness, receive ongoing mentoring or refresher training, and be given the responsibility and opportunity to practice what they learn.

RESUMO

The goal of this study is to isolate cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) from sugarcane leaves (SCL) and fabricate filter membranes. Filter membranes consisting of the CNC and varying amount graphene oxide (GO) were fabricated using vacuum filtration technique. The α-cellulose content increased from 53.56 ± 0.49 % in untreated SCL to 78.44 ± 0.56 % and 84.99 ± 0.44 % in steam-exploded and bleached fibers, respectively. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) of CNC isolated from SCL indicated nanosized particles in the range of 7.3 nm and 150 nm for diameter and length, respectively. Morphologies of the fiber and CNC/GO membranes were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and crystallinity by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of crystal lattice. The crystallinity index of CNC decreased with the addition of GO into the membranes. The CNC/GO-2 recorded the highest tensile index of 3.001 MPa. The removal efficiency increases with increasing GO content. The highest removal efficiency of 98.08 % was recorded for CNC/GO-2. CNC/GO-2 membrane reduced growth of Escherichia coli to 65 CFU compared to >300 CFU of control sample. SCL is a potential bioresource for isolation of cellulose nanocrystals and fabrication of high-efficiency filter membrane for particulate matter removal and inhibition of bacteria.

RESUMO

Manganese dioxide nanomaterials have wide applications in many areas from catalysis and Li-ion batteries to gas sensing. Understanding the crystallization pathways, morphologies, and formation of defects in their structure is particularly important but still a challenging issue. Herein, we employed an arsenal of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), neutron diffraction, positron annihilation spectroscopies, and ab initio calculations to investigate the evolution of the morphology and structure of α-MnO2 nanomaterials prepared via reduction of KMnO4 solution with C2H5OH prior to being annealed in air at 200-600 °C. We explored a novel evolution that α-MnO2 nucleation can be formed even at room temperature and gradually developed to α-MnO2 nanorods at above 500 °C. We also found the existence of H+ or K+ ions in the [1 × 1] tunnels of α-MnO2 and observed the simultaneous presence of Mn and O vacancies in α-MnO2 crystals at low temperatures. Increasing the temperature removed these O vacancies, leaving only the Mn vacancies in the samples.

RESUMO

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a widely studied domesticated model plant. Seed awning is an unfavorable trait during rice harvesting and processing. Hence, loss of awn was one of the target characters selected during domestication. However, the genetic mechanisms underlying awn development in rice are not well understood. In this study, we analyzed and characterized the genes for awn development using a mapping population derived from a cross between the Korean indica cultivar 'Milyang23' and a near-isogenic line NIL4/9 derived from a cross between 'Hwaseong' and Oryza minuta. Two quantitative trait loci (QTLs), qAwn4 and qAwn9, mapped on chromosomes 4 and 9, respectively, increased awn length in an additive manner. Through comparative sequencing analyses of the parental lines, LABA1 was determined as the causal gene underlying qAwn4. qAwn9 was mapped to a 199-kb physical region between markers RM24663 and RM24679. Within this interval, 27 annotated genes were identified, and five genes, including a basic leucine zipper transcription factor 76 (OsbZIP76), were considered as candidate genes for qAwn9 based on their functional annotations and sequence variations. Haplotype analysis using the candidate gene revealed tropical-japonica specific sequence variants in the qAwn9 region, which partly explains the non-detection of qAwn9 in previous studies that used progenies from interspecific crosses. This provides further evidence that OsbZIP76 is possibly a causal gene for qAwn9. The O. minuta qAwn9 allele was identified as a major QTL, providing an important molecular target for understanding the genetic control of awn development in rice. Our results lay the foundation for further cloning of the awn gene underlying qAwn9.

RESUMO

In rice, low-temperature germinability (LTG) is essential for stable stand establishment using the direct seeding method in temperate and high-altitude areas. Previously, we reported that the quantitative trait locus qLTG1 is associated with LTG. qLTG1 is also associated with tolerance to several abiotic stresses, such as salt and osmotic conditions. In this study, map-based cloning and sequence analysis indicated that qLTG1 is allelic to DWARF2 (OsD2), which encodes cytochrome P450 D2 (LOC_Os01g10040) involved in brassinosteroid (BR) biosynthesis. Sequence comparison of the two parental lines, Hwaseong and Oryza rufipogon (IRGC 105491), revealed five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the coding region. Three of these SNPs led to missense mutations in OsD2, whereas the other two SNPs were synonymous. We evaluated two T-DNA insertion mutants, viz., overexpression (OsD2-OE) and knockdown (OsD2-KD) mutants of OsD2, with the Dongjin genetic background. OsD2-KD plants showed a decrease in LTG and grain size. In contrast, OsD2-OE plants showed an increase in grain size and LTG. We also examined the expression levels of several BR signaling and biosynthetic genes using the T-DNA insertion mutants. Gene expression analysis and BR application experiments demonstrated that BR enhanced the seed germination rate under low-temperature conditions. These results suggest that OsD2 is associated with the regulation of LTG and improving grain size. Thus, OsD2 may be a suitable target for rice breeding programs to improve rice yield and LTG.

RESUMO

SARS-CoV-2 (Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), a virus causing severe acute respiratory disease in humans, emerged in late 2019. This respiratory virus can spread via aerosols, fomites, contaminated hands or surfaces as for other coronaviruses. Studying their persistence under different environmental conditions represents a key step for better understanding the virus transmission. This work aimed to present a reproducible procedure for collecting data of stability and inactivation kinetics from the scientific literature. The aim was to identify data useful for characterizing the persistence of viruses in the food production plants. As a result, a large dataset related to persistence on matrices or in liquid media under different environmental conditions is presented. This procedure, combining bibliographic survey, data digitalization techniques and predictive microbiological modelling, identified 65 research articles providing 455 coronaviruses kinetics. A ranking step as well as a technical validation with a Gage Repeatability & Reproducibility process were performed to check the quality of the kinetics. All data were deposited in public repositories for future uses by other researchers.

RESUMO

Solar steam generator (SSG) systems have attracted increasing attention, owing to its simple manufacturing, material abundance, cost-effectiveness, and environmentally friendly freshwater production. This system relies on photothermic materials and water absorbing substrates for a clean continuous distillation process. To optimize this process, there are factors that are needed to be considered such as selection of solar absorber and water absorbent materials, followed by micro/macro-structural system design for efficient water evaporation, floating, and filtration capability. In this contribution, we highlight the general interfacial SSG concept, review and compare recent progresses of different SSG systems, as well as discuss important factors on performance optimization. Furthermore, unaddressed challenges such as SSG's cost to performance ratio, filtration of untreatable micropollutants/microorganisms, and the need of standardization testing will be discussed to further advance future SSG studies.

RESUMO

Four near-isogenic lines (NILs) with different allele combinations of the starch branching enzyme 3 (SBE3) and granule-bound starch synthase 1 (GBSS1) were developed by crossing the japonica rice cultivars "Dodamssal" and "Hwayeong." The associations between sequence variations in SBE3 and GBSS1, and starch-related traits were investigated. These sequence variations led to changes in seed morphology, starch structure, starch crystallinity, amylopectin chain length distribution, digestibility, apparent amylose content (AAC), and resistant starch content (RS). SBE3 and GBSS1 showed genetic interaction in regulating AAC and RS. Gene expression profiling of panicle tissues revealed significant differences in expression levels of GBSS1, SBE3, and other starch-related genes among the four NILs, indicating that variations in GBSS1 and SBE3 changed the expression level of starch-related genes. These variations contributed to the changes observed in AAC, RS, and physico-chemical characteristics of the rice starch from the NILs.
