Activity of purine metabolism enzyme, adenosine deaminase (ADA) in lymphocytes and erythrocytes from patients with pneumoconiosis and chronic bronchitis was determined. ADA activity decrease was found in lymphocytes and erythrocytes for both decreases. The observed decrease of ADA activity indicates that after the long term work in mineral dust industry damage of purine metabolism takes place, that is similar to the disturbance observed under secondary immunodeficiency. Changes in activity of superoxide dismutase and catalase show some decrease of functional activity of anti-radical protection. Therefore the results obtained can be used for the selection of a group with highest risk of predisposition to these diseases.

105 patients with compression mononeuropathies were divided into 2 groups by duration of HBO performed under an original method. The effect of HBO treatment was assessed by changes in neurological symptoms and positive trend on ENMG. The most appreciable response was obtained in acute disease treated by 4-session short course. Longer courses of VIII-X sessions were less efficient.

Analysis is made of a complex of clinicoelectrophysiologic, biochemical and biophysical studies conducted in 220 patients with brain stroke, receiving a course of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) at minor differential pressure (1.2-1.3 absolute atmospheres). It is shown that HBO can be applied as pathogenetic therapy in patients afflicted with brain stroke. It produces a marked clinical effect and normalizes EEG, REG and acid-alkaline balance, brings about a decrease of initially high lipid peroxidation (LPO), activating antioxidative processes and superoxide dismutase. However, such an effect is only produced by the first HBO sessions at minor differential pressure, which is likely to be due to the substitution action of hyperoxia and activation of antioxidative processes. The studies thus made validate the efficacy of short-term sessions of HBO in patients with brain stroke and the possibility of hyperoxia over-dosage in patients with disturbed antioxidant defence.

Theoretical prerequisites have been submitted for possible alteration in the activity of erythrocytic antioxidant enzymes in children with anemia. The results are presented of the investigation of children with varying anemias for activity of erythrocytic superoxide dismutase and catalase.

Quantitative methods for evaluation of impairments in the functional state of liver tissue by means of a generalized biochemical index enabled to evaluate efficiency of hemosorption as compared with other methods of preoperative treatment of patients with mechanical jaundice of calculous genesis. Hemosorption was found to contribute most effectively to restoration of the liver tissue functional state decreasing the risk of acute liver tissue insufficiency during the postoperational period.

A modified procedure is developed for estimation of free phenol in blood serum by means of gas-liquid chromatography, appropriate in clinico-biochemical assays. The method enabled to evacuate the blood serum free phenol in healthy persons as well as in various pathologies of abdominal cavity before and after hemosorption. After hemosorption a distinct decrease of the free phenol content was observed in blood, correlating with improved clinico-biochemical patterns of the patients, with a decrease in encephalopathy manifestations as well as with normalization of the neurological status.

To evaluate the hemosorption efficacy in patients with acute destructive pancreatitis, the authors suggest an enzymogram consisting of 4 enzymatic tests: trypsin, trypsin inhibitor, gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase, pseudocholinesterase. It was demonstrated that these enzymes are highly informative, mirroring liver and pancreatic functions. After hemosorption these indicators were discovered to be improved as compared to those in controls. This made it possible to use the enzymograms for the assessment of the hemosorption efficacy for acute destructive pancreatitis.
