Background: Few studies have compared the associations between long-term exposures to particulate matters (aerodynamic diameter ≤1, ≤2.5 and ≤10 µm: PM1, PM2.5 and PM10, respectively) and asthma and asthma-related respiratory symptoms. The objective of the present study was to compare the strength of the aforementioned associations in middle-aged and elderly adults. Methods: We calculated the mean 722-day personal exposure estimates of PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 at 1 km×1 km spatial resolution between 2013 and 2019 at individual levels from China High Air Pollutants (CHAP) datasets. Using logistic regression models, we presented the associations as odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals, for each interquartile range (IQR) increase in PM1/PM2.5/PM10 concentration. Asthma denoted a self-reported history of physician-diagnosed asthma or wheezing in the preceding 12 months. Results: We included 7371 participants in COPD surveillance from Guangdong, China. Each IQR increase in PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 was associated with a greater odds (OR (95% CI)) of asthma (PM1: 1.22 (1.02-1.45); PM2.5: 1.24 (1.04-1.48); PM10: 1.30 (1.07-1.57)), wheeze (PM1: 1.27 (1.11-1.44); PM2.5: 1.30 (1.14-1.48); PM10: 1.34 (1.17-1.55)), persistent cough (PM1: 1.33 (1.06-1.66); PM2.5: 1.36 (1.09-1.71); PM10: 1.31 (1.02-1.68)) and dyspnoea (PM1: 2.10 (1.84-2.41); PM2.5: 2.17 (1.90-2.48); PM10: 2.29 (1.96-2.66)). Sensitivity analysis results were robust after excluding individuals with a family history of allergy. Associations of PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 with asthma and asthma-related respiratory symptoms were slightly stronger in males. Conclusion: Long-term exposure to PM is associated with increased risks of asthma and asthma-related respiratory symptoms.

Background: We developed and validated novel radiomics-based nomograms to identify epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations and the Ki-67 proliferation index of non-small cell lung cancer. Methods: We enrolled 132 patients with histologically verified non-small cell lung cancer from four hospital institutions who underwent computed tomography (CT) scans. EGFR mutations and the Ki-67 proliferation index were measured from tumor tissues. A total of 1,287 radiomic features were extracted, and a three-stage feature selection method was implemented to acquire the most valuable radiomic features. Finally, the radiomic scores and nomograms of the two tasks were established and tested. Receiver operating characteristic curves, calibration curves, and decision curves were used to evaluate their prediction performance and clinical utility. Results: In task [1], smoking status and histological type were significantly associated with EGFR mutations. After feature selection, 10 features were used to establish radiomic score, which showed good performance [area under the curve (AUC) =0.800] in the validation cohort. The radiomic nomogram had an AUC of 0.798 (95% CI: 0.664 to 0.931) with a C-index of 0.798 in the validation cohort. In task [2], gender, smoking status, histological type, and stage showed a significant correlation with Ki-67 proliferation index expression. A total of 28 features were selected to develop a radiomic score, with an AUC of 0.820 in the validation cohort. The final nomogram showed an AUC of 0.828 (95% CI: 0.703 to 0.953) with a C-index of 0.828 in the validation cohort. Conclusions: EGFR mutations and Ki-67 proliferation index in non-small cell lung cancer can be predicted efficiently by the novel radiomic scores and nomograms.

Here, we used pre-treatment CT images to develop and evaluate a radiomic signature that can predict the expression of programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We then verified its predictive performance by cross-referencing its results with clinical characteristics. This two-center retrospective analysis included 125 patients with histologically confirmed NSCLC. A total of 1287 hand-crafted radiomic features were observed from manually determined tumor regions. Valuable features were then selected with a ridge regression-based recursive feature elimination approach. Machine learning-based prediction models were then built from this and compared each other. The final radiomic signature was built using logistic regression in the primary cohort, and then tested in a validation cohort. Finally, we compared the efficacy of the radiomic signature to the clinical model and the radiomic-clinical nomogram. Among the 125 patients, 89 were classified as having PD-L1 positive expression. However, there was no significant difference in PD-L1 expression levels determined by clinical characteristics (P = 0.109-0.955). Upon selecting 9 radiomic features, we found that the logistic regression-based prediction model performed the best (AUC = 0.96, P < 0.001). In the external cohort, our radiomic signature showed an AUC of 0.85, which outperformed both the clinical model (AUC = 0.38, P < 0.001) and the radiomics-nomogram model (AUC = 0.61, P < 0.001). Our CT-based hand-crafted radiomic signature model can effectively predict PD-L1 expression levels, providing a noninvasive means of better understanding PD-L1 expression in patients with NSCLC.

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence of depression and related factors among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Shenzhen China. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, convenient sampling was applied to recruit participants at the AIDS(Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome)voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) clinic and gay clubs in 2015, thereby collecting data on sociodemographics, serological information, sexual behaviotablers, and depression. Descriptive analyses were conducted to determine the distribution of the measured variables. A chi-square test was applied to test the association between different levels of factors and depression status, alongside a binary logistic regression for multivariate analysis of depression. RESULTS: A total of 334 MSM completed the survey. Their mean age was 29.88 ± 7.56, and 35.6% had at least college education; 44.9% considered themselves to be homosexual, and 43.4% considered themselves bisexual. The median score of depression was 12, with 116 people (34.7%) depressed. A total of 267 took the serological test. Of these 267, 60 (22.5%) were reported HIV(Human Immunodeficiency Virus) positive, 33 (12.4%) were syphilis positive, and none were hepatitis C positive. The multiple logistic regression analysis showed that a lack of awareness of AIDS knowledge (OR(Odds Ratio): 2.636, 95% CI(confidence interval): 1.384-5.020), peer education (OR: 1.752, 95% CI: 1.055-2.190), and lack of heterosexuality (OR: 1.805, 95% CI: 1.080-3.018) increased the odds of depression. CONCLUSION: Raising awareness of AIDS and strengthening peer education can improve depression among men who have sex with men.

This study aimed to assess whether a WeChat-based self-management intervention would be effective for community middle-aged and elderly adults with hypertension in Guangzhou, China. We conducted a cluster-randomized control trial with a total of 464 participants (intervention, n = 186; control, n = 276) between March 2018 and May 2019. The self-management intervention lasted for 6 months, consisting of health education, health promotion, group chat, and blood pressure (BP) monitoring. All individuals in the baseline and follow-up surveys were assessed for BP and completed a hypertension knowledge questionnaire, self-efficacy scale, self-management scale, and social support scale. A total of 253 participants (intervention, n = 110; control, n = 143) completed the follow-up survey and were included in the analysis. The adjusted mean differences in the changes in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) between the intervention and control groups were -6.9 (95% Confidence Interval (CI) -11.2 to -2.6; p = 0.002) and -3.1 (95% CI -5.7 to -0.6; p = 0.016) mmHg, respectively. Individuals who participated in the intervention program had better BP monitoring, improved their hypertension self-management as well as parts of their disease knowledge and self-efficacy. The WeChat-based self-management intervention may be a feasible and efficient program to help Chinese community middle-aged and elderly hypertensive patients lower BP and improve self-management.
