RESUMO

NB-Fi (Narrow Band Fidelity) is a promising protocol for low-power wide-area networks. NB-Fi networks use license-exempt Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) bands and, thus, NB-Fi devices can work in two modes: with and without Listen Before Talk (LBT). This paper compares these modes with different implementations of LBT in terms of packet loss rate (PLR), delay, energy consumption, and throughput. Interestingly, in some scenarios, the results contradict expectations from the classic papers on channel access because of the peculiarities of the NB-Fi technology. These contradictions are explained in the paper. The results show that LBT can significantly improve all the considered performance indicators when the network load exceeds 40 packets per second. With extensive simulation, we show that in a small NB-Fi network, the optimal PLR, delay, and energy consumption are obtained with the implementation of LBT that corresponds to non-persistent CSMA. In a large NB-Fi network, where some devices can be hidden from others, the best strategy to improve PLR, delay, throughput, and energy consumption is to use the implementation of LBT that corresponds to p-persistent CSMA.

LPWANs are a promising solution for wireless sensor networks. To compete with such widespread technologies as LoRaWAN and Sigfox, recently a new LPWAN technology called NB-Fi has been developed. In a short time, many NB-Fi networks have been deployed in various countries. Although NB-Fi, Sigfox, and LoRaWAN have been designed for similar applications, they implement different approaches. However, no detailed comparisons of them are present in academic literature. This paper aims to fill this gap by analyzing and comparing NB-Fi, Sigfox, and LoRaWAN focusing on performance evaluation results rather than just nominal parameters declared by the developers. Specifically, the paper evaluates the packet loss rate, packet error rate, and average delay in these networks in different scenarios. The results are used to provide guidelines to decide which technology to use under which conditions. Specifically, Sigfox performs best in scenarios when devices transmit small pieces of data without repetitions and acknowledgments, and LoRaWAN is the most reliable for transmitting bigger pieces of data, while NB-Fi is best suited for acknowledged transmissions of small pieces of data.

In recent decades, industrial emissions have been reduced in many countries, which provides an opportunity for the recovery of polluted ecosystems. However, our knowledge of the rate and factors facilitating the recovery of local bird populations after pollution abatement is incomplete. Long-term (1989-2021) annual observations on nest-box populations of a passerine bird, Ficedula hypoleuca, were used to analyze temporal dynamics of breeding parameters following a 50-fold reduction of industrial emissions from the Middle Ural copper smelter (MUCS) according to pollution zone, habitat, air temperature, and breeding density. In the heavily polluted (impact) zone (1-2 km of MUCS), egg and fledgling production were strongly impaired compared to the moderately polluted (buffer zone, 4-8 km of MUCS) and unpolluted control zone (16-27 km of MUCS). During the study period, the laying date advanced along with increasing spring air temperatures. The clutch size increased in the impact zone by 26%, in the buffer zone by 10%, and in control by 5%. The number of fledglings increased in the impact zone by 102% and the buffer zone by 17%. In the most recent year (2021), mean laying date, clutch size, fledgling production, and the frequency of nests with unhatched eggs in the impact zone did not reach the control level, whereas the frequency of nests with perished chicks did not differ among zones. Breeding parameters of birds in the impact zone improved slowly, likely due to the slow recovery of habitats. We conclude that bird reproduction may require many decades to recover fully in the heavily polluted zone.

The recent Wi-Fi HaLow technology focuses on adopting Wi-Fi for the needs of the Internet of Things. A key feature of Wi-Fi HaLow is the Restricted Access Window (RAW) mechanism that allows an access point to divide the sensors into groups and to assign each group to an exclusively reserved time interval where only the stations of a particular group can transmit. In this work, we study how to optimally configure RAW in a scenario with a high number of energy harvesting sensor devices. For such a scenario, we consider a problem of device grouping and develop a model of data transmission, which takes into account the peculiarities of channel access and the fact that the devices can run out of energy within the allocated intervals. We show how to use the developed model in order to determine the optimal duration of RAW intervals and the optimal number of groups that provide the required probability of data delivery and minimize the amount of consumed channel resources. The numerical results show that the optimal RAW configuration can reduce the amount of consumed channel resources by almost 50%.

LoRaWAN infrastructure has become widely deployed to provide wireless communications for various sensor applications. These applications generate different traffic volumes and require different quality of service (QoS). The paper presents an accurate mathematical model of low-power data transmission in a LoRaWAN sensor network, which allows accurate validation of key QoS indices, such as network capacity and packet loss ratio. Since LoRaWAN networks operate in the unlicensed spectrum, the model takes into account transmission attempt failures caused by random noise in the channel. Given QoS requirements, we can use the model to study how the performance of a LoRaWAN network depends on the traffic load and other scenario parameters. Since in LoRaWAN networks the transmissions at different modulation and coding schemes (MCSs) typically do not collide, we use the model to assign MCSs to the devices to satisfy their QoS requirements.

Wi-Fi HaLow is an adaptation of the widespread Wi-Fi technology for the Internet of Things scenarios. Such scenarios often involve numerous wireless stations connected to a shared channel, and contention for the channel significantly affects the performance in such networks. Wi-Fi HaLow contains numerous solutions aimed at handling the contention between stations, two of which, namely, the Centralized Authentication Control (CAC) and the Distributed Authentication Control (DAC), address the contention reduction during the link set-up process. The link set-up process is special because the access point knows nothing of the connecting stations and its means of control of these stations are very limited. While DAC is self-adaptive, CAC does require an algorithm to dynamically control its parameters. Being just a framework, the Wi-Fi HaLow standard neither specifies such an algorithm nor recommends which protocol, CAC or DAC, is more suitable in a given situation. In this paper, we solve both issues by developing a novel robust close-to-optimal algorithm for CAC and compare CAC and DAC in a vast set of experiments.
