RESUMO

This study aimed to investigate the impact of 12 weeks of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on hemodynamic variables at rest and during exercise in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea. Twenty-six obese adults with moderate-to-severe OSA (AHI = 42 ±â€Š22.9 e/h) were randomly assigned to HIIT or a control group. Sleep parameters, ambulatorial, aortic, and during-exercise SBP and DBP were assessed at baseline and after 12 weeks. Generalized estimated equations assessed differences between groups over time. When compared with control group, HIIT reduced AHI (17.1 ±â€Š6.2; e/h, P  < 0.01), SBP nighttime (10.2 ±â€Š5.0 mmHg; P  = 0.034), DBP nighttime (7.9 ±â€Š4.0 mmHg; P  = 0.038), DBP aortic (5.5 ±â€Š2.9 mmHg; P  = 0.048), and SBP max (29.6 ±â€Š11.8 mmHg; P  = 0.045). In patients with OSA, 12 weeks of HIIT decreases sleep apnoea severity and blood pressure in rest and during exercise.

RESUMO

Endophytic bacteria play a crucial role in plant development and adaptation, and the knowledge of how endophytic bacteria assemblage is influenced by cultivation site and plant genotype is an important step to achieve microbiome manipulation. This work aimed to study the roots and stems of endophytic bacteriome of four maize genotypes cultivated in two regions of the semi-arid region of Pernambuco - Brazil. Our hypothesis is that the endophytic community assemblage will be influenced by plant genotypes and cultivation region. Metabarcoding sequencing data revealed significant differences in alfa diversity in function of both factors, genotypes, and maize organs. Beta diversity analysis showed that the bacterial communities differ mainly in function of the plant organ. The most abundant genera found in the samples were Leifsonia, Bacillus, Klebsiella, Streptomyces, and Bradyrhizobium. To understand ecological interactions within each compartment, we constructed co-occurrence network for each organ. This analysis revealed important differences in network structure and complexity and suggested that Leifsonia (the main genera found) had distinct ecological roles depending on the plant organ. Our data showed that root endophytic maize bacteria would be influenced by cultivation site, but not by genotype. We believe that, collectively, our data not only characterize the bacteriome associated with this plant and how different factors shape it, but also increase the knowledge to select potential bacteria for bioinoculant production.

RESUMO

Vigorous physical activity has been associated with a reduced risk of developing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, whether high-intensity interval training (HIIT) reduces OSA severity remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the impact of 12 weeks of HIIT on the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and sleep parameters in participants with moderate-severe OSA. In this randomized controlled trial, 36 adults (19 males; 52.2 ± 9.8 years; body mass index = 34.2 ± 5.8) with moderate to severe OSA (AHI = 42.0 ± 22.9 e/h) were randomly assigned to HIIT [5 periods of 4 min of walking or running on a treadmill at 90-95 % of maximum heart rate (HRmax) interspersed with 3 min of walking at 50-55 % of HRmax performed three times per week for 12 weeks] or a control group (CG; stretching exercises performed two times per week for 12 weeks). Sleep parameters were assessed at baseline and after 12 weeks through overnight polysomnography. Generalized estimated equations assessed differences between groups over time. There was not group × time interaction for body mass index between groups (p = 0.074). However, significant group × time interactions were observed for AHI (CG change = 8.2 ± 3.7, HIIT change = -8.6 ± 4.8; p = 0.005), SaO2 minimum (CG change = -1.6 ± 1.6 %, HIIT change = 0.4 ± 2.3 %; p = 0.030), total sleep time (CG change = -31.5 ± 19.5 min, HIIT change = 33.7 ± 19.3 min; p = 0.049), and sleep efficiency (CG change = -3.2 ± 4.4 %, HIIT change = 9.9 ± 3.5 %; p = 0.026). Moreover, there was a significant time × group interaction for maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max; CG change = -1.1 ± 1.0 mL/kg/min, HIIT change = 4.8 ± 0.9 mL/kg/min; p < 0.001)]. However, In patients with OSA, 12 weeks of HIIT decreases sleep apnea severity, improves sleep quality, and cardiorespiratory fitness.

This article analyzes the discursive constructions of people who provide care in outpatient services in the Brazilian Unified Health System and their effects on the bodies of people with disabilities. This is a qualitative and analytical study, with a cartographic approach, with the participation of workers, managers, user-citizens and their families, in a Specialized Rehabilitation Center in Paraíba that offers multidisciplinary outpatient care for four areas of disability (physical, intellectual, visual and auditory) and autism spectrum disorder. We identified several disciplinary devices, among them the operationalization of different linguistic codes that structure asymmetrical power relations in the control of bodies. We recognize that complex power relations are immanent in the field of health care, not exclusively in the Care Network for Persons with Disabilities. Identifying and giving visibility to the effects of these relationships in the production of health care allows us to define our actions as political beings in the world of care.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the association between the Sense of Coherence (SoC) and Quality of Life (QoL) in adolescents with heart disease. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 164 adolescents with congenital or valvular heart disease, aged between 10 and 18 years, treated in a referral center in the city of Recife - Brazil. The information collected contains census data, type of heart disease, economic status identified according to the Brazilian Criteria for Economic Classification (ABEP), as well as an evaluation of the SoC and the QoL. RESULTS: The SoC (50.09) and QoL (72.23) exhibited high average scores. The SoC was positively correlated with all dimensions of the QoL scale (p<0.001). The social and school dimensions, respectively, presented the highest and lowest scores. The linear regression analysis revealed that the SoC influenced the school and emotional dimensions. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that the SoC is a protective factor in the life of adolescents. This factor helps on the improvement of perception of QoL and on successfully dealing with daily adversities and chronic stress.

RESUMO

Objectives: To compare the effects of self-selected and predetermined intensity on sleep quality and duration, daytime sleepiness, and sleep efficiency of adolescents with obesity after 12 weeks of aerobic training. Material and Methods: Thirty-seven adolescents (12 girls), 13-18 years old, with obesity (BMI = 95th) were randomized into a predetermined intensity group (PIG), exercise intensity around 60-70% of heart rate reserve; or self-selected intensity group (SIG), the adolescents chose the speed/intensity at the beginning of each session and were able to change it every 5 minutes. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) were used to assess sleep outcomes. Results: No differences were observed for PSQI [0.00 ± 2.00 vs 1.38 ± 2.7; p=0.195; d=0.60 (moderate effect)], sleep duration [-0.95 ± 1.2 vs -0.35 ± 1.6; p=0.358; d=0.41 (small effect)], ESS [(2.10 ± 3.9 vs 1.15 ± 4.5; p=0.195; d=0.23 (small effect)], and sleep efficiency [(81.5 ± 24.0 vs 79.4 ± 17.0; p=0.8.14; d=0.10 (trivial effect)] for the PIG and SIG groups, respectively. Conclusion: Aerobic training at a self- selected or predetermined intensity does not modulate sleep quality, sleep duration and efficiency, and daytime sleepiness, independent of intensity.

RESUMO

The new coronavi rus, which has spread worldwide, has spiraled out of control in Brazil. The number of infected children has increased, and more Infants Special Care Units are needed to prevent deaths. This study aims to report the most common signs and symptoms in children infected by seasonal respiratory viruses and those infected by COVID-19. This knowledge is essential to educate pediatric dentists, who may contribute to identifying the difference in symptoms and notify the cases, thus preventing the spread of COVID-19. This study was carried out in a Family Health Center of Ipojuca, state of Pernambuco, Brazil, and included 54 children seen for dental emergency care. The parents provided information about the signs and symptoms of their children' s health conditions during the lockdown from March to July 2020. All children had a serological test to detect any exposure to the virus. Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Mann-Whitney tests were used to assess the distribution of the data and compare the quantitative variables between the groups. Among the study participants, 16.7% tested positive for COVID-19. The most prevalent symptoms were headache (38.9%), sneezing (35.2%), and fever (20.4%); six out of nine children with a positive test had symptoms after infection of an adult in the family. Children infected with COVID-19 showed similar clinical signs to those with negative results. Pediatric dentists should acquire knowledge to report on sick children and prevent the spread of the disease.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Santiago, LCS, Lyra, MJ, Germano-Soares, AH, Lins-Filho, OL, Queiroz, DR, Prazeres, TMP, Mello, MT, Pedrosa, RP, Falcão, APST, and Santos, MAM. Effects of strength training on sleep parameters of adolescents: a randomized controlled trial. J Strength Cond Res 36(5): 1222-1227, 2022-This study aimed to examine the effects of 12 weeks of strength training (ST) on sleep quality and daytime sleepiness in adolescents with sleep complaints. Thirty adolescents were randomly assigned to 2 groups: ST group (ST, n = 18) and control group (CG, n = 12). Anthropometric, body composition, one-repetition maximum test, and sleep parameters (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index [PSQI] and Epworth Sleepiness Scale [ESS]) were evaluated. Training consisted of 55 min·d-1 (3 times a week, for 12 weeks), 3 sets of 10-12 repetitions with a 1-minute rest interval between sets and exercises. Baseline and postintervention differences were analyzed using Generalized Estimating Equations and the effect size (ES) with Cohen's d coefficient. Significance was set at (p < 0.05). After 12 weeks of ST, a significant decrease in the PSQI score (7.3 ± 0.7 vs. 5.1 ± 0.6; ES = 4.10) was observed in the ST group, but not in the CG (6.3 ± 0.8 vs. 7.4 ± 0.7; ES = 1.53). A significant decrease in ESS score was found in the ST group (10.1 ± 0.7 vs. 8.2 ± 0.7; ES = 3.08), without differences in the CG (10.7 ± 0.8 vs. 11.0 ± 0.7; ES = 0.56). The ST group presented increased total sleep duration (h·min-1) (6.2 ± 0.2 vs. 6.9 ± 0.2; ES = 3.60), but not the CG (7.0 ± 0.2 vs. 6.8 ± 0.1; ES = 1.32). Individual analyses showed ≈67% of adolescents experienced a reduction in PSQI (8.3; confidence interval [CI] 95% 6.8-10.1) and ESS (8.3; CI 95% 6.7-9.9) scores after ST, whereas only ≈17% of control subjects presented reduced scores (PSQI [11.1; CI 95% 9.5-12.9] and ESS [11.0; CI 95% 9.4-12.6]). Strength training improved sleep quality and increased total sleep duration.

RESUMO

Abstract: Sugarcane is an important Brazilian commodity, being usually cultivated in soils with low natural fertility. This study aimed to isolate diazotrophic endophytes from sugarcane tissues and evaluate the morphological and physiological characteristics of their colonies as well as their plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits in select diazotrophic endophytic bacteria. Fifty-six bacterial isolates were identified in the sugarcane tissues, and these isolates presented distinct morphological and physiological traits. A total of thirty-five bacterial isolates were biochemically evaluated. Overall, Bacillus was the dominant genus. Isolates of Methylobacterium spp. and Brevibacillus agri were present only in leaves, while Herbaspirillum seropedicae occurred only in stems. Except to IPA-CF45A, all isolates were nitrogenase positive. All endophytes exhibit production of indol 3-acetic acid. Over 50% of endophytes solubilize phosphate, release N-acyl homoserine lactones, and present the activity of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase, catalase, lipase and protease. The network analysis showed that isolates belonged to Burkholderia, Herbaspirillum, and Methylobacterium interact with Bacillus. Bacterial endophytes exhibited distinct morphological, physiological, and PGP traits that are useful for sustainable agriculture, highlighting the isolates IPA-CC33, IPA-CF65, IPA-CC9 and IPA-CF27. Further studies on the effects of these diazotrophic endophytes and their potential for providing microbial inoculants for improving sugarcane fields will provide valuable information to maintain the sustainability and environment quality.

RESUMO

The microbial composition of the rhizosphere and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under the most common input combinations in maize (Zea mays L.) cultivated in Brazil have not been characterized yet. In this study, we evaluated the influence of maize stover coverage (S), urea-topdressing fertilization (F), and the microbial inoculant Azospirillum brasilense (I) on soil GHG emissions and rhizosphere microbial communities during maize development. We conducted a greenhouse experiment and measured methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes from soil cultivated with maize plants under factorial combinations of the inputs and a control treatment (F, I, S, FI, FS, IS, FIS, and control). Plant biomass was evaluated, and rhizosphere soil samples were collected at V5 and V15 stages and DNA was extracted. The abundance of functional genes (mcrA, pmoA, nifH, and nosZ) was determined by quantitative PCR (qPCR) and the structure of the microbial community was assessed through 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Our results corroborate with previous studies which used fewer input combinations and revealed different responses for the following three inputs: F increased N2O emissions around 1 week after application; I tended to reduce CH4 and CO2 emissions, acting as a plant growth stimulator through phytohormones; S showed an increment for CO2 emissions by increasing carbon-use efficiency. IS and FIS treatments presented significant gains in biomass that could be related to Actinobacteria (19.0%) and Bacilli (10.0%) in IS, and Bacilli (9.7%) in FIS, which are the microbial taxa commonly associated with lignocellulose degradation. Comparing all factors, the IS (inoculant + maize stover) treatment was considered the best option for plant biomass production and GHG mitigation since FIS provides small gains toward the management effort of F application.

RESUMO

Studies evaluating the structure and diversity of bacterial communities in arid environments including the rhizosphere of local and adapted plant species are important. Therefore, we used a sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene for describing the structure and diversity of soil bacterial community in three zones: Agreste, Transition and Sertão. The bacterial community was clustered in 9,838 OTUs in Agreste, 8,388 OTUs in the transition, and 14,849 OTUs for Sertão. Among the most abundant phyla, Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria were abundant in Agreste and Sertão, respectively, while Actinobacteria were abundant in Transition and Sertão. Specific taxa of Proteobacteria, in Agreste, and Actinobacteria, in Sertão, exhibited differences according to biotic and abiotic conditions. Thus, the structure and diversity of bacterial community were different in these areas and were influenced by environmental and soil conditions.

RESUMO

This article presents an analysis of the production of care networks for persons with disabilities in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. We employed a qualitative methodology with a cartographic approach, involving the participation of four users-citizens-guides. Weekly virtual meetings were held throughout the second half of 2020, in which we were able to collect, systematize, and theorize on four issues: 1) guilt and (non) life expectancy on the part of persons with disabilities; 2) the place of disability in family dynamics; 3) the production of specific core relational dependency networks; and 4) the public vs. private care offerings for persons with disabilities. Based on these findings, we were able to lend visibility to and explicitly affirm the ways in which these user-citizens participate in the complex process of care building for persons with disabilities and their families.

An integrative review was carried out where after analyzing the inclusion criteria, 616 articles were selected for reading titles and abstracts and 94 of these were selected for full reading. After the full reading, 15 articles were elected to be part of this review. Results show that both sleep disorders are risk factors for depression, as depression can be a risk factor for sleep disorders. Insomnia was the most frequent sleep disorder in adolescence, besides being considered a public health problem. It is concluded that sleep disorders and depressive symptoms are associated and present with great frequency in the adolescent public.

RESUMO

AIM: This study aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing the prevalence of dental caries in non-syndromic children with children and adolescents with Down syndrome (DS). METHODS: The strategy included a search for articles in electronic databases (MEDLINE via PubMed, Cochrane Library, LILACS, and SciELO). The methods for assessment included the modified Newcastle-Ottawa scale, the methodological quality for cross-sectional studies, and a random-effects meta-analysis model. By obtaining the odds ratio, the tests of heterogeneity and sensitivity were performed. This study includes unpublished data from the cross-sectional study by Paiva et al. (2018), which was conducted in the city of Recife/PE. RESULTS: Twelve cross- section studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. Results indicated that children and adolescents with DS had lower caries experience when compared to the non-syndromic ones (95 % CI: 0.22-0.84). The results indicated that the seven studies were statistically significant (p < 0.00001). The risk of bias remained high given that the majority of the studies were cross-sectional reports. CONCLUSION: The results of this study fill the lack of knowledge and indicated that there is scientific evidence to suggest that children and adolescents with Down Syndrome have fewer caries than the non-syndromic group.

RESUMO

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and its association with malocclusion among children in Recife, Brazil. METHODS: This study included 390 children aged 7 to 8 years. The data comprised the measurement of body mass, orthodontic examination, and parental information required by the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children. The statistics tools used were Pearson's chi-square test and the Lemeshow test. RESULTS: Positively screened for SDB was found in 33.3% of the children, and the association with overjet was P = .007 (odds ratio [OR], 95%, confidence interval [CI]: 1.93). The association with anterior open bite was P = .008 (OR, 95% CI: 2.03), and the association with posterior crossbite was P = .001 (OR, 95% CI: 2.89). This report was unable to indicate an association between body mass index and SDB. The multivariate logistic regression model revealed that the anterior open bite (P = .002; OR, 95% CI: 2.34) and posterior crossbite (P = .014; OR, 95% CI: 2.79) had an association with positively screened for SDB. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study indicated that the prevalence of SDB was high and highly associated with malocclusion. Since posterior crossbite and anterior open bite were associated with positively screened for SDB, early diagnosis and intervention may prevent and minimize adverse effects of SDB on individuals lives.
