RESUMO

This paper explores theories of motivation, including instinct theory, arousal theory, incentive theory, intrinsic theory, extrinsic theory, the ARCS model, self-determination theory, expectancy-value theory, and goal-orientation theory. Each theory is described in detail, along with its key concepts, assumptions, and implications for behavior. Intrinsic theory suggests that individuals are motivated by internal factors like enjoyment and satisfaction, while extrinsic theory suggests that external factors like rewards and social pressure drive behavior. Arousal theory says that to feel motivated, people try to keep an optimal level of activation or excitement. Incentive theory suggests that behavior is driven by the promise of rewards or the threat of punishment. The ARCS model, designed to motivate learners, incorporates elements of attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction. Self-determination theory proposes that individuals are motivated by their needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The expectation-value theory suggests that behavior is influenced by individuals' beliefs about their ability to succeed and the value they place on the task. The goal-orientation theory suggests that individuals have different goals for engaging in a behavior. By understanding these different theories of motivation, educators, coaches, managers, and individuals may analyze what drives behavior and how to harness it to achieve their goals. In essence, a nuanced comprehension of these diverse motivation theories equips individuals across varied domains with a strategic toolkit to navigate the complex landscape of human behavior, fostering a more profound understanding of what propels actions and how to channel these insights toward the attainment of overarching goals.

Background: Oral cancers are often detected at late stages, and patients usually had a 50% chance of a 5-year survival rate. Oral cancer usually has an early precancerous stage before its actual malignant transformation. Although there are various approaches to diagnose the early stages of cancer, there is one less explored, cost-effective, and simple technique known as the crystallization test. The aim of the study was to evaluate the crystallization patterns in tobacco users, oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs), and oral malignancies. Materials and Methods: Fifteen patients with oral malignancies, 15 patients with oral potentially malignant disorders, 15 tobacco users, and 15 healthy individuals participated in the crystallization test. Single blood drop was used to perform this test and the obtained crystal patterns were analyzed. Results: This test had a sensitivity of 93.3%, 80.0%, and 20.0% for oral malignancies, oral Potentially Malignant Disorders (PMDs), and tobacco users, respectively. Chi-square analysis revealed a highly significant transverse form between OPMDs and oral malignancies (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Crystallization test was found to be a sensitive, reliable, economical, and less invasive procedure for screening of oral PMDs and oral malignancies under strictly maintained physical conditions.

An obturator hernia (OH) is a rare form of pelvic hernia in which the abdominal contents protrude through the obturator canal. Malnourished, frail, and multiparous elderly females are at risk of an OH. Preoperative diagnosis of obturator hernia is challenging because of non-specific symptoms. Most of the cases of OH reported in the literature are diagnosed during a laparotomy for acute intestinal obstruction. However, a contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) scan of the abdomen is the best diagnostic investigation for OH. The morbidity and mortality are high because of the associated complications. We report a case of an obturator hernia in a 79-year-old cachectic female with features of acute intestinal obstruction and the usefulness of a CT scan in the preoperative diagnosis. Early diagnosis and treatment are the keys to preventing disastrous complications.

Accurate stratification of patients with post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC, or long COVID) would allow precision clinical management strategies. However, the natural history of long COVID is incompletely understood and characterized by an extremely wide range of manifestations that are difficult to analyze computationally. In addition, the generalizability of machine learning classification of COVID-19 clinical outcomes has rarely been tested. We present a method for computationally modeling PASC phenotype data based on electronic healthcare records (EHRs) and for assessing pairwise phenotypic similarity between patients using semantic similarity. Our approach defines a nonlinear similarity function that maps from a feature space of phenotypic abnormalities to a matrix of pairwise patient similarity that can be clustered using unsupervised machine learning procedures. Using k-means clustering of this similarity matrix, we found six distinct clusters of PASC patients, each with distinct profiles of phenotypic abnormalities. There was a significant association of cluster membership with a range of pre-existing conditions and with measures of severity during acute COVID-19. Two of the clusters were associated with severe manifestations and displayed increased mortality. We assigned new patients from other healthcare centers to one of the six clusters on the basis of maximum semantic similarity to the original patients. We show that the identified clusters were generalizable across different hospital systems and that the increased mortality rate was consistently observed in two of the clusters. Semantic phenotypic clustering can provide a foundation for assigning patients to stratified subgroups for natural history or therapy studies on PASC.

The scale and duration of neutralizing antibody responses targeting SARS-CoV-2 viral variants represents a critically important serological parameter that predicts protective immunity for COVID-19. In this study, we present longitudinal data illustrating the impact of age, sex and comorbidities on the kinetics and strength of vaccine-induced neutralizing antibody responses for key variants in an Asian volunteer cohort. We demonstrate a reduction in neutralizing antibody titres across all groups six months post-vaccination and show a marked reduction in the serological binding and neutralizing response targeting Omicron compared to other viral variants. We also highlight the increase in cross-protective neutralizing antibody responses against Omicron induced by a third dose (booster) of vaccine. These data illustrate how key virological factors such as immune escape mutation combined with host factors such as age and sex of the vaccinated individuals influence the strength and duration of cross-protective serological immunity for COVID-19.

A total of ten 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase producing PGPR isolates were selected and evaluated for the induction of drought stress tolerance in tomato. Among the selected PGPR, maximum seed (laboratory) and plant growth promotion (greenhouse) was observed in tomato seeds bacterized with Bacillus subtilis Rhizo SF 48. The genomic study confirmed the presence of ACC deaminase gene in Rhizo SF 48 and the obtained sequence was deposited to the NCBI database with the Accession No. MK652706. The tomato plants grown upon treatment with Rhizo SF 48 significantly enhanced plant growth even after exposing to different levels of drought stress as compared to stress induced control plants. About 7.5% and 38% increase in RWC were observed in Rhizo SF 48 treated tomato plants grown under well-watered and stress conditions (S4) compared to their control plants, respectively. An increase of 0.76, 0.23 and 0.78 fold in proline, SOD and APX activity and a decrease of 0.3 fold in MDA and H2O2 contents were observed in Rhizo SF 48 treated plants compared to control plants grown under S4 conditions. The histo-chemical studies showed lower accumulations of H2O2 and superoxide anion in the leaves of Rhizo SF 48 treated plants under drought stress, which was in confirmation with the quantification results of H2O2 and SOD. The qRT-PCR studies on drought (Le25) and ethylene responsive factor (SlERF84) marker genes showed that a significant decrease of 0.75 and 0.81 folds, respectively in Le25 and SlERF84 accumulation was observed in Rhizo SF 48 treated plants compared to untreated plants grown under S4 conditions. From the results, it can be attributed that ACC deaminase producing Rhizo SF 48 was able to protect tomato plants against oxidative damage caused due to drought stress and enhanced plant growth promotion. It can be concluded that ACC deaminase producing Rhizo SF 48 can serve as a useful bio-inoculant for sustainable tomato production in arid and semi-arid regions with water deficit.

For the development of renal diseases, oxidative stress (OS) is reasoned to be one of the risk factors. For the treatment or prevention of the renal disease, the use of antioxidants could be a hopeful therapeutic mediation as they retard or block the oxidative reaction along with the inflammatory process. Luteolin (Lut) is a plant flavonoid, a pharmacologically active component normally found in glycosylated forms in basic perilla leaf, green pepper, celery, seed, honeysuckle bloom, and chamomile blossom; it exhibits antioxidant activity. In this investigation, we explored the nephroprotective activity of Lut on bisphenol A (BPA)-induced nephron toxicity in rats. Orally administering Lut (100 and 200 mg/kg) diminished BPA-induced anomalies in the kidney, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and serum uric acid levels. Lut therapy reduced the BPA-influenced generation of inflammatory mediators, inclusive of tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin 6, and interleukin 1 beta. This was coupled with significant improvement in kidney histopathologic features. Lut enhanced the nuclear factor-like 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) expression, which showed protection against OS induced by BPA. The current outcomes of the study showed that Lut has a strong reactive oxygen species scavenging property and potentially decreases the lipid peroxidation as well as inhibits DNA damage in renal toxicity induced by BPA. In conclusion, the potential antioxidant effect of Lut may be because of its modulatory effect on the Nrf2/antioxidant response element (ARE)/HO-1 pathway, which means it protects the kidney from BPA-induced oxidative injury. © 2019 IUBMB Life, 2019.

Tenofovir is recommended as one of the first line agents in combination with other antiretroviral drugs for management of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is known to cause renal failure after exposure for a median duration of 5 months. We report tenofovir induced adverse drug reaction in a 56-year-old female patient who was diagnosed to have HIV 1 infection since 10 years. The combination antiretroviral treatment included tenofovir, emtricitabine and ritonavir/lopinavir regimen since the last 6 years. She presented with recent onset renal failure and renal biopsy showed interstitial nephritis which could probably attributable to tenofovir.

BACKGROUND: Cellular mesoblastic nephroma has been associated with a more aggressive course than classic mesoblastic nephroma, including local recurrences and metastases. OBJECTIVE: To define the clinicopathologic and imaging features distinguishing cellular from classic mesoblastic nephroma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective review of clinical charts and imaging studies of ten children with mesoblastic nephroma from 1996 to 2007 at a large children's hospital. RESULTS: In six children the mesoblastic nephroma was pure cellular, in two mixed, and in two classic. The mean ages at diagnosis were 107 days for those with the cellular form, and 32 days for those with the classic form. Hypoechoic or low-attenuation regions representing necrosis or hemorrhage were found in all children with the cellular form and in none of those with the classic form. Hypertension was present in 70% and hypercalcemia in 20% of the children and resolved following nephrectomy. Two cellular tumors encased major abdominal vessels. Local recurrence and metastases occurred within 6 months of tumor resection in two children with the cellular form. Intraspinal extension and intratumoral pseudoaneurysm were seen in one child with the cellular form. The cellular tumors shared histopathologic features with infantile fibrosarcoma (IFS), and RT-PCR testing in two children with the cellular form revealed the t(12;15) ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion common to IFS. CONCLUSION: Distinct from the classic form, cellular mesoblastic nephroma is more heterogeneous in appearance on imaging, tends to be larger and present later in infancy, and can exhibit aggressive behavior including vascular encasement and metastasis. Intraspinal extension and intratumoral pseudoaneurysm are previously unreported findings encountered in our cellular mesoblastic nephroma series. The shared histopathology and translocation gene fusion support the concept of cellular mesoblastic nephroma as the renal form of IFS.

A series of N-2-(4-(4-(2-substitutedthiazol-4-yl) piperazin-1-yl)-2-oxoethyl)acetamides were synthesized in an effort to prepare novel atypical antipsychotic agents. The compounds were synthesized by either microwave irradiation technique or by conventional synthesis and were characterized by spectral data (IR, (1)H NMR, and MS) and the purity was ascertained by microanalysis. All the synthesized compounds were screened for their in vivo pharmacological activity in Swiss albino mice. D(2) antagonism studies were performed using climbing mouse assay model and 5-HT(2A) antagonism studies were performed using quipazine induced head twitches in mice. It was observed that none of the new chemical entities exhibited catalepsy. AG 3 was found to be the most active compound.

RESUMO

A new sphingolipid, (2S,3R,4E)-1,3-dihydroxy-2-[(nonadecanoyl) amino]-octadec-4-ene (1) along with ubiquitous batyl alcohol is isolated from the gorgonian, Junceella juncea Pallas (Gorgonaceae) of the Indian Ocean. The structure of 1 is determined on the basis of 1H- and 13C-NMR, COSY, FABMS, and GC-EIMS experiments.
