RESUMO

Predicting climate anomalies months in advance is of tremendous socioeconomic value. Facing both theoretical and practical constraints, this realm of "seasonal prediction" progressed slowly in recent decades. Here we devise an innovative scheme that pushes the boundary of seasonal prediction by recognizing and isolating distinct spatiotemporal footprints left by modes of climate variability that cause varying annual cycles in response to the solar forcing. The predictive power harnessed from these spatiotemporal footprints results in a prediction skill surpassing existing models for seasonal forecasts of eastern China rainfall, which is one of the most challenging seasonal prediction problems. By considering varying annual cycles explicitly, the new scheme is able to predict multi-provincial flood and/or drought occurrences seamlessly over an entire year. This novel scheme is generically applicable for improving seasonal forecasts over other monsoon regions and for critical climate variables such as surface temperature and Arctic sea-ice extent.

Herein, a facile wet-spinning strategy was used for the fabrication of mechanically strong all-chitin filaments from an aqueous NaOH solution using ß-chitin nanofibers (ß-ChNFs). It is hypothesized that to reach high mechanical performance it is important to preserve the crystalline structure of chitin during fabrication. To explore this possibility, ß-ChNFs were disintegrated from squid pens by a mild procedure and showed a uniform diameter of 10-25 nm, length of a few microns, and a high aspect ratio of more than 200. An interesting finding was that gel-like ß-ChNF filaments were directly formed in aqueous NaOH without using any organic or ionic agents. The gelation of ß-ChNFS under alkali treatments contributed to the construction of strong nanonetworks and thus facilitated the formation of high-strength filaments. The resulting all-chitin filaments showed a high tensile strength and Young's modulus of 251.3 ± 12.45 MPa and 12.1 ± 0.72 GPa, respectively, which were further investigated for utilization as flexible sensors. The advantages of this strategy included the lack of use of any toxic solvents and the achievement of high mechanical performance for the all-chitin filaments. We believe that this wet-spinning approach may promote the functional utilization of chitin to develop high-strength filaments in smart textiles, biosensors, and structural reinforcements.

The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the existing evidence in literature addressing the relationship between video game participation and loneliness. The following databases were searched on October 2, 2021: Medline, Psychinfo, SportDiscus, Web of Science, and CINAHL. The risk of bias of cross-sectional study was assessed by using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal checklist for analytical cross-sectional studies with attrition bias added for longitudinal studies. The results of all included studies were synthesized using narrative synthesis. Meta-analysis was utilized to synthesis the findings of the studies that had sufficient degree of statistical and methodological homogeneity. Eighteen studies were included in this systematic review, which comprised of 20,372 participants. The narrative synthesis showed mixed findings on the relationship between video game participation and loneliness. Meta-analysis that was conducted to nine cross-sectional studies revealed that video game participation was positively and weakly associated with loneliness (r = 0.10, 95% CI = 0.03-0.17). Both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies demonstrated serious risk of bias with the addition of serious inconsistency of findings from cross-sectional studies. The existing literature is equivocal in terms of making a definitive judgment on the association between video game participation and loneliness. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42021283025. In the recent decade, hiatus is the hottest issue in the community of climate change. As the area of great importance, the Tibetan Plateau (TP), however, did not appear to have any warming stoppage in the hiatus period. In fact, the TP showed a continuous warming in the recent decade. To explore why the TP did not show hiatus, we divide the surface air temperature into dynamically-induced temperature (DIT) and radiatively-forced temperature (RFT) by applying the dynamical adjustment method. Our results show that DIT displayed a relatively uniform warming background in the TP, with no obvious correlations with dynamic factors. Meanwhile, as the major contribution to warming, the RFT effect over the TP played the dominant role. The warming role is illustrated using the temperature change between perturbed and control simulation responses to CO2 or black carbon (BC) forcing via Community Earth System Model (CESM). It shows that an obvious warming in the TP is induced by the CO2 warming effect, and BC exhibits an amplifying effect on the warming. Therefore, the continuous warming in the TP was a result of uniform DIT warming over a large scale and enhanced RFT warming at a regional scale.
