OBJECTIVES: Studies assessing aneurysm rupture "risk" based on comparative retrospective analyses of medications taken on presentation may be subject to presentation bias. Are patients with ruptured aneurysms simply less likely to be taking medications than those with unruptured aneurysms? METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted among patients with treated aneurysms from June 2016 to July 2023. A step-wise comparison of demographics, clinical characteristics (rupture status), and medications taken upon presentation was performed between ruptured and unruptured cases. RESULTS: 1311 patients with intracranial aneurysms were included. The majority of patients presenting with ruptured aneurysms took no medications (68%), in contrast to 22% with unruptured aneurysms (p < 0.001). The majority of patients with unruptured aneurysms took 2-5 medications (51%), in contrast to 15% of patients with ruptured aneurysms taking 2-5 medications (p < 0.001). Twelve percent of patients with unruptured aneurysms took more than 5 medications while only 1% with ruptured aneurysms did (p < 0.001). Thirty-five different medications were associated with unruptured presentation, including all evaluated antiplatelet agents, anti-hypertensives, antacids, pulmonary inhalers, and psychiatric medications (p < 0.05); no medications were associated with rupture on presentation. CONCLUSION: One cannot derive conclusions about medications and "risk" of rupture based on analyses at time of presentation. This study identifies 35 different medications that were statistically-significantly associated with unruptured presentation; it is doubtful each are "protective" against aneurysm rupture.

Although several previous studies have used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging to report topological changes in the brain in epilepsy, it remains unclear whether the individual structural covariance network (SCN) changes in epilepsy, especially in pediatric epilepsy with visual cortex resection but with normal functions. Herein, individual SCNs were mapped and analyzed for seven pediatric patients with epilepsy after surgery and 15 age-matched healthy controls. A whole-brain individual SCN was constructed based on an automated anatomical labeling template, and global and nodal network metrics were calculated for statistical analyses. Small-world properties were exhibited by pediatric patients after brain surgery and by healthy controls. After brain surgery, pediatric patients with epilepsy exhibited a higher shortest path length, lower global efficiency, and higher nodal efficiency in the cuneus than those in healthy controls. These results revealed that pediatric epilepsy after brain surgery, even with normal functions, showed altered topological organization of the individual SCNs, which revealed residual network topological abnormalities and may provide initial evidence for the underlying functional impairments in the brain of pediatric patients with epilepsy after surgery that can occur in the future.

PURPOSE: This study aims to reveal the immunopathogenesis of the high-risk corneal transplantation using a comparative proteomic approach. METHODS: The immunological properties of ocular tissues (including corneal grafts, aqueous humour, and iris-ciliary body) were analysed using a high-risk rabbit corneal transplantation model employing a comparative proteomic approach. RESULTS: The corneal grafts revealed a dramatic increase in the immune response both at the early (postoperative day 7) and rejection stages, along with the appearance of transplantation stress-induced cellular senescence in the early stage. The aqueous humour (AH) displayed persistent pathological alterations, indicated by the significant enrichment of complement and coagulation cascades pathway in the early stage and interleukin (IL)-17 signalling pathway in the rejection stage. More surprisingly, the pronounced elevation of immune response was also observed in the iris-ciliary body (I-CB) tissues at the early and rejection stages. The enriched immune-related pathways including antigen processing and presentation, complement and coagulation cascades, and IL-17 signalling pathway. Furthermore, proteomic analysis revealed that the implantation of Cyclosporine A drug delivery system (CsA-DDS) into the anterior chamber obviously mitigated corneal transplantation rejection by inhibiting immunoreaction both in the corneal grafts and I-CB tissues. CONCLUSION: The results highlighted the involvement of intraocular immunity both in the grafts and I-CB tissues during corneal transplantation rejection, further suggesting the anterior chamber as an optimal drug-delivery site for its treatment.

Multienzyme cascades (MECs) have gained much attention in synthetic chemistry but remain far from being a reliable synthetic tool. Here we report a four-enzyme cascade comprising a cofactor-independent and a cofactor self-sustaining bienzymatic module for the enantioselective benzylic C-H amination of arylalkanes, a challenging transformation from bulk chemicals to high value-added chiral amines. The two modules were subsequently optimized by enzyme co-immobilization with microenvironmental tuning, and finally integrated in a gas-liquid segmented flow system, resulting in simultaneous improvements in enzyme performance, mass transfer, system compatibility, and productivity. The flow system enabled continuous C-H amination of arylalkanes (up to 100 mM) utilizing the sole cofactor NADH (0.5 mM) in >90% conversion, achieving a high space-time yield (STY) of 3.6 g·L -1 ·h -1 , which is a 90-fold increase over previously reported values.

Electrocatalytic reduction of biomass-derived furan compounds provides a green and sustainable approach to produce value-added fuels and chemicals. Despite the achievements in unimolecular transformation, C-C coupling which holds great promise to yield precursors for high-density fuels has not received extensive attention. Herein, we report a Cu2O-derived nanowire array material with switchable selectivity to electrocatalytic reduction of furfural depending on the electrolyte pH. Besides a high selectivity of 98.4% to furfuryl alcohol via hydrogenation at pH 9.5, the Cu2O-derived array structure also exhibits a high selectivity of 83.5% to hydrofuroin via C-C coupling at pH 14. Upon control experiments and detailed characterization of the electrodes, the array architecture is proposed to decrease the diffusion of ketyl radicals which are the key intermediates for C-C coupling. The confined diffusion results in a high local concentration of the radicals in the array and facilitates their collision for enhancing the formation of hydrofuroin.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are highly heterogeneous and potentially malignant tumors arising from secretory cells of the neuroendocrine system. Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP-NENs) are the most common subtype of NENs. Historically, GEP-NENs have been regarded as infrequent and slow-growing malignancies; however, recent data have demonstrated that the worldwide prevalence and incidence of GEP-NENs have increased exponentially over the last three decades. In addition, an increasing number of studies have proven that GEP-NENs result in a limited life expectancy. These findings suggested that the natural biology of GEP-NENs is more aggressive than commonly assumed. Therefore, there is an urgent need for advanced researches focusing on the diagnosis and management of patients with GEP-NENs. In this review, we have summarized the limitations and recent advancements in our comprehension of the epidemiology, clinical presentations, pathology, molecular biology, diagnosis, and treatment of GEP-NETs to identify factors contributing to delays in diagnosis and timely treatment of these patients.

The aim of this study was to develop a real-time risk prediction model for extrauterine growth retardation (EUGR). A total of 2514 very preterm infants were allocated into a training set and an external validation set. The most appropriate independent variables were screened using univariate analysis and Lasso regression with tenfold cross-validation, while the prediction model was designed using binary multivariate logistic regression. A visualization of the risk variables was created using a nomogram, while the calibration plot and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to calibrate the prediction model. Clinical efficacy was assessed using the decision curve analysis (DCA) curves. Eight optimal predictors that namely birth weight, small for gestation age (SGA), hypertensive disease complicating pregnancy (HDCP), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), multiple births, cumulative duration of fasting, growth velocity and postnatal corticosteroids were introduced into the logistic regression equation to construct the EUGR prediction model. The area under the ROC curve of the training set and the external verification set was 83.1% and 84.6%, respectively. The calibration curve indicate that the model fits well. The DCA curve shows that the risk threshold for clinical application is 0-95% in both set. Introducing Birth weight, SGA, HDCP, GDM, Multiple births, Cumulative duration of fasting, Growth velocity and Postnatal corticosteroids into the nomogram increased its usefulness for predicting EUGR risk in very preterm infants.

Oral diseases are among the most common diseases worldwide and are associated with systemic illnesses, and the rising occurrence of oral diseases significantly impacts the quality of life for many individuals. It is crucial to detect and treat these conditions early to prevent them from advancing. DNA methylation is a fundamental epigenetic process that contributes to a variety of diseases including various oral diseases. Taking advantage of its reversibility, DNA methylation becomes a viable therapeutic target by regulating various cellular processes. Understanding the potential role of this DNA alteration in oral diseases can provide significant advances and more opportunities for diagnosis and therapy. This article will review the biology of DNA methylation, and then mainly discuss the key findings on DNA methylation in oral cancer, periodontitis, endodontic disease, oral mucosal disease, and clefts of the lip and/or palate in the background of studies on global DNA methylation and gene-specific DNA methylation.

BACKGROUND: The liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP2) plays a pivotal role in the host's immune response against pathogenic microorganisms. Numerous such antimicrobial peptides have recently been shown to mitigate infection risk in fish, and studying those harboured by the economically important fish Acrossocheilus fasciatus is imperative for enhancing its immune responses against pathogenic microorganisms. In this study, we cloned and sequenced LEAP2 cDNA from A. fasciatus to examine its expression in immune tissues and investigate the structure-activity relationships of its intramolecular disulphide bonds. RESULTS: The predicted amino acid sequence of A. fasciatus LEAP2 was found to include a signal peptide, pro-domain, and mature peptide. Sequence analysis indicated that A. fasciatus LEAP2 is a member of the fish LEAP2A cluster and is closely related to Cyprinus carpio LEAP2A. A. fasciatus LEAP2 transcripts were expressed in various tissues, with the head kidney exhibiting the highest mRNA levels. Upon exposure to Aeromonas hydrophila infection, LEAP2 expression was significantly upregulated in the liver, head kidney, and spleen. A mature peptide of A. fasciatus LEAP2, consisting of two disulphide bonds (Af-LEAP2-cys), and a linear form of the LEAP2 mature peptide (Af-LEAP2) were chemically synthesised. The circular dichroism spectroscopy result shows differences between the secondary structures of Af-LEAP2 and Af-LEAP2-cys, with a lower proportion of alpha helix and a higher proportion of random coil in Af-LEAP2. Af-LEAP2 exhibited potent antimicrobial activity against most tested bacteria, including Acinetobacter guillouiae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, and Staphylococcus warneri. In contrast, Af-LEAP2-cys demonstrated weak or no antibacterial activity against the tested bacteria. Af-LEAP2 had a disruptive effect on bacterial cell membrane integrity, whereas Af-LEAP2-cys did not exhibit this effect. Additionally, neither Af-LEAP2 nor Af-LEAP2-cys displayed any observable ability to hydrolyse the genomic DNA of P. aeruginosa. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides clear evidence that linear LEAP2 exhibits better antibacterial activity than oxidised LEAP2, thereby confirming, for the first time, this phenomenon in fish.

Purpose: Fungal keratitis (FK) is an invasive corneal infection associated with significant risk to vision. Although the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)/stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling pathway has been recognized for its role in defending against viral infections, its involvement in FK still remains largely unclear. This study sought to elucidate the contribution of the cGAS/STING signaling pathway to the pathogenesis of FK. Methods: The expression of cGAS/STING signaling components was assessed in a murine model of Candida albicans keratitis through RNA sequencing, western blot analysis, immunofluorescence staining, and real-time PCR. Both genetic (utilizing Sting1gt/gt mice) and pharmacological (using C176) interventions were employed to inhibit STING activity, allowing for the evaluation of resultant pathogenic alterations in FK using slit-lamp examination, clinical scoring, hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, fungal culture, and RNA sequencing. Subconjunctival administration of the NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome inhibitor MCC950 was performed to evaluate FK manifestations following STING activity blockade. Furthermore, the impact of the STING agonist diABZI on FK progression was investigated. Results: Compared to uninfected corneas, those infected with C. albicans exhibited increased expression of cGAS/STING signaling components, as well as its elevated activity. Inhibiting cGAS/STING signaling exacerbated the advancement of FK, as evidenced by elevated clinical scores, augmented fungal load, and heightened inflammatory response, including NLRP3 inflammasome activation and pyroptosis. Pharmacological inhibition of the NLRP3 inflammasome effectively mitigated the exacerbated FK by suppressing STING activity. Conversely, pre-activation of STING exacerbated FK progression compared to the PBS control, characterized by increased fungal burden and reinforced inflammatory infiltration. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the essential role of the cGAS/STING signaling pathway in FK pathogenesis and highlights the necessity of its proper activation for the host against FK.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the needs and constraints to cardiac rehabilitation (CR) among patients diagnosed with coronary heart disease (CHD) in a community-based setting, and thereby facilitating the implementation of effective CR programs for this population. Methods: Focus group interviews were used as the primary research methodology. A total of 11 community-dwelling individuals diagnosed with CHD were selected from a community hospital to participate in in-depth interviews, aiming to discern and analyze their requirements and constraints experienced concerning medical resources and healthcare agency. The textual data underwent examination using Colaizzi's method of descriptive data analysis. Results: Deficits existed in the perceptions of patients with CHD within a community-based setting about their condition and CR, and in the social support for this disease. Patients expressed expectations for professional guidance during CR, gained an understanding about the beneficial effects of emotional stability on cognitive function. Patients expressed their thoughts and feelings regarding the diversity of physical exercise options. Two main themes and seven sub-themes were identified: (a) "Insufficient CR resources for patients": Lack of awareness about CHD; inadequate knowledge about secondary prevention/CR; insufficient support from family and friends. (b) "Patient CR initiative": Patient self-adjustment; expectation of professional rehabilitation guidance; stable emotions improving cognition; diverse attitudes and awareness of exercise. Conclusion: For more effective CR, community-based medical teams should provide more comprehensive and individualized rehabilitation programs. They should focus on individual variations and preferences of patients, as well as enhance the autonomy of patients and improve their self-care ability through effective empowerment measures.

Traditional Chinese medicine, specifically the Jianpi Tiaoqi (JPTQ) decoction, has been explored for its role in treating breast cancer, particularly in inhibiting lung metastasis in affected mice. Our study evaluated the effects of JPTQ on several factors, including tumour growth, apoptosis, angiogenesis, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and immune microenvironment regulation. We used bioluminescence imaging to observe in situ tumour growth and potential lung metastasis. Transcriptomic analysis provided insights into gene expression, whereas flow cytometry was used to examine changes in specific immune cells, such as CD4+ T cells and myeloid-derived suppressor cells. Several essential proteins and genes, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), matrix metalloprotein-9 (MMP-9) and B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), were assessed through quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, western blotting and immunohistochemistry. Our findings showed that JPTQ treatment inhibited tumour proliferation in cancer-bearing mice. Bioluminescence imaging and pathological analysis indicated a reduction in lung metastasis. Transcriptome analysis of lung and tumour tissues indicated that the genes associated with EMT, angiogenesis, proliferation and apoptosis were regulated in the JPTQ-treated group. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis suggested enrichment of immune-related pathways. Flow cytometry indicated that JPTQ treatment reduced the proportion of monocyte-myeloid-derived suppressor cells in the lung and increased the number of CD4+ T cells in the peripheral blood and the number of T helper 1 (Th1) cells in the spleen (P < 0.05). E-cadherin and cleaved caspase 3 were upregulated, whereas Snail, Bcl-2, Ki67 and VEGF were downregulated in the lung and tumour tissues; moreover, the expression of MMP-9 was downregulated in the lung tissue (P < 0.05). In essence, JPTQ not only inhibits tumour growth in affected mice, but also promotes positive immune responses, reduces angiogenesis, boosts tumour cell apoptosis, reverses EMT and decreases breast cancer lung metastasis.

Fusarium oxysporum is a cross-kingdom pathogen. While some strains cause disseminated fusariosis and blinding corneal infections in humans, others are responsible for devastating vascular wilt diseases in plants. To better understand the distinct adaptations of F. oxysporum to animal or plant hosts, we conducted a comparative phenotypic and genetic analysis of two strains: MRL8996 (isolated from a keratitis patient) and Fol4287 (isolated from a wilted tomato [Solanum lycopersicum]). In vivo infection of mouse corneas and tomato plants revealed that, while both strains cause symptoms in both hosts, MRL8996 caused more severe corneal ulceration and perforation in mice, whereas Fol4287 induced more pronounced wilting symptoms in tomato. In vitro assays using abiotic stress treatments revealed that the human pathogen MRL8996 was better adapted to elevated temperatures, whereas the plant pathogen Fol4287 was more tolerant of osmotic and cell wall stresses. Both strains displayed broad resistance to antifungal treatment, with MRL8996 exhibiting the paradoxical effect of increased tolerance to higher concentrations of the antifungal caspofungin. We identified a set of accessory chromosomes (ACs) and protein-encoding genes with distinct transposon profiles and functions, respectively, between MRL8996 and Fol4287. Interestingly, ACs from both genomes also encode proteins with shared functions, such as chromatin remodeling and post-translational protein modifications. Our phenotypic assays and comparative genomics analyses lay the foundation for future studies correlating genotype with phenotype and for developing targeted antifungals for agricultural and clinical uses.

PURPOSE: Hepatic venovenous communications (HVVC) is detectable in more than one-third of cirrhotic patients, where portal hypertension (PHT) tends to present more severely. We aimed to explore the prognostic implications of HVVC in patients with sinusoidal PHT treated by transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS). METHOD: The multicenter data of patients (2020-2022) undergoing balloon-occluded hepatic venography during TIPS were retrospectively analyzed. Pre-TIPS total bile acids (TBA) levels in portal, hepatic and peripheral veins were compared between groups. The primary endpoint was the development of overt hepatic encephalopathy (HE) within one year after TIPS. RESULTS: 183 patients were eligible and classified by the presence (n = 69, 37.7 %) or absence (n = 114, 62.3 %) of HVVC. The agreement between wedged hepatic venous pressure and portal venous pressure was poor in HVVC group (intraclass correlation coefficients [ICC]: 0.141, difference: 13.4 mmHg, p < 0.001), but almost perfect in non-HVVC group (ICC: 0.877, difference: 0.4 mmHg, p = 0.152). At baseline, patients with HVVC had lower Model for end-stage liver disease scores (p < 0.001), blood ammonia levels (p < 0.001), TBA concentrations in the hepatic (p = 0.011) and peripheral veins (p = 0.049) rather than in the portal veins (p = 0.516), and a higher portosystemic pressure gradient (p = 0.035), suggesting more effective intrahepatic perfusion in this group. Within 1-year post-TIPS, HVVC group had a lower incidence of overt HE (11.7 % vs. 30.5 %, p = 0.004, HR: 0.34, 95 % CI: 0.16-0.74, absolute risk difference [ARD]: -17.4) and an improved liver transplantation-free survival rate (97.1 % vs. 86.8 %, p = 0.021, HR: 0.16, 95 % CI: 0.05-0.91, ARD: -10.3). CONCLUSIONS: For patients with sinusoidal PHT treated by TIPS, the presence of HVVC was associated with a reduced risk of overt HE and a potential survival benefit.

Focused vector beams (VBs) are important topic in the areas of light field manipulation. Geometric metasurfaces provide a convenient platform to facilitate the generation of focused VBs. In this study, we propose a dielectric geometric metasurface to generate multichannel focused higher-order Poincaré sphere (HOP) beams. With identical meta-atoms of half-wave plate, the metasurface comprises two sub-metasurfaces, and each of them includes two sets of rings related to Fresnel zones. For meta-atoms on each set of rings, the hyperbolic geometric phase profile is configured so that the mirror-symmetrical position-flip of the off-axis focal point is enabled under the chirality switch of the illuminating circular polarization. With the design of helical geometric phase profiles for the two sets of rings, a sub-metasurface generate two HOP beams at the symmetrical two focal points. The performance of the two sub-metasurfaces enables the metasurface with four sets of rings to generate the array of four HOP beams. The proposed method was validated by theoretical analyses, numerical simulation and experimental conduction. This research would be significant in miniaturizing and integrating optical systems involving applications of VB generations and applications.

Phase vortices exhibit significant applications and hold promising prospects across various scientific fields. However, while extensive attention has been devoted to the two-dimensional transverse plane of these vortices, their longitudinal properties have received comparatively limited exploration. Our study focuses on the longitudinal evolution of phase vortices, encompassing an investigation of variational topological charges and phase distributions. The investigation employs the rotationally interleaved multi-spiral, characterized by multiple identical spirals arranged in an azimuthally symmetric rotation, to modulate phase distributions by the variable spiral radius versus the azimuthal angle. Initially, we analyze the modulation effect theoretically, delving into propagation properties and vortex formations. Subsequently, through numerical simulations of vortices generated by both single and multi-spiral setups, we examine the longitudinal evolution of topological charges and phase distributions. The analyses reveal a step-wise reductant topological charges and a tortuous increasing spatial variations of phase singularities in transmission direction, with the dependency on both propagation distance and number of multi-spiral. The outcomes hold significant potential applications in optical communications and optical tweezers.

Cadmium (Cd2+) ion is one of the most crucial industrial pollutants that cause serious harm to the human body. We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a highly sensitive Cd2+ sensor based on hydrogel coated excessively tilted fiber grating. The hydrogel with the functional monomer of the allyl thiourea can specifically bind to Cd2+, and hence forming a complex. The grating excites high order cladding modes, and ensures a sufficient interaction between the light and hydrogel binding to Cd2+, providing highly sensitive monitoring. The results show that the sensor can detect 0-160 pM Cd2+ in aqueous solution. The maximum sensitivity is 10600 nm/µM, and the minimum detection concentration is 20 pM (about 0.004 ppb), which is much less than that of the international standard (3 ppb). The proposed sensor exhibits high sensitivity, ultra-low detection limit, specificity, and a compact structure, offering potential as a tool for Cd2+ detection in aqueous solution.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Middle meningeal artery embolization (MMAE) has emerged as a promising modality for chronic/subacute subdural hematoma treatment; however, consensus regarding embolization technique and embolisate has not been achieved. We thus sought to compare the efficacy of distinct MMAE techniques and embolisate. METHODS: An institutional registry was reviewed to identify patients undergoing standalone MMAE for symptomatic chronic/subacute subdural hematoma. Surgical rescue rate and time preceding 50% hematoma resolution were evaluated across 3 technical groups: aggressive penetration (AP), nonaggressive penetration with proximal coil embolization (NP-PC), and nonaggressive penetration alone (NP). Effect sizes were adjusted for demographic, neurological and radiological features through multivariable logistic and Cox regression. RESULTS: Among 117 procedures, 33.3% achieved AP, 36.8% had NP-PC, and 29.9% had NP. The rate of surgical rescue was 2.6% after AP, 9.3% for NP-PC, and 11.4% for NP. In patients not undergoing rescue surgery, 82.4% achieved hematoma resolution ≥50% at a median imaging follow-up of 56 days; AP or NP-PC were each statistically significantly associated with enhanced hematoma resolution as compared with NP (P = .02). Similarly, sensitivity analysis within medium-size hematoma and antiplatelet/anticoagulation-at-admission subgroups revealed a superiority of resolution after AP or NP-PC. A unique, comparative secondary analysis of liquid embolisate (Onyx vs n-butyl cyanoacrylate) revealed no impact on rate of surgical rescue or hematoma resolution. CONCLUSION: AP was associated with the lowest rate of surgical rescue, while both AP and NP-PC were associated with improved rates of hematoma resolution.

Introduction: Long-term heavy metal contamination of soil affects the structure and function of microbial communities. The aim of our study was to investigate the effect of soil heavy metal contamination on microorganisms and the impact of different heavy metal pollution levels on the microbial interactions. Methods: We collected soil samples and determined soil properties. Microbial diversity was analyzed in two groups of samples using high-throughput sequencing technology. Additionally, we constructed microbial networks to analyze microbial interactions. Results: The pollution load index (PLI) < 1 indicates that the area is not polluted. 1 < PLI < 2 represents moderate pollution. PLI was 1.05 and 0.14 for the heavy metal contaminated area and the uncontaminated area, respectively. Cd, Hg, Pb, Zn, and Cu were identified as the major contaminants in the contaminated area, with the contamination factors were 30.35, 11.26, 5.46, 5.19, and 2.46, respectively. The diversities and compositions of the bacterial community varied significantly between the two groups. Compared to the uncontaminated area, the co-occurrence network between bacterial and fungal species in the contaminated area was more complex. The keystone taxa of the co-occurrence network in the contaminated area were more than those in the uncontaminated area and were completely different from it. Discussion: Heavy metal concentrations played a crucial role in shaping the difference in microbial community compositions. Microorganisms adapt to long-term and moderate levels of heavy metal contamination through enhanced interactions. Bacteria resistant to heavy metal concentrations may play an important role in soils contaminated with moderate levels of heavy metals over long periods of time.
