OBJECTIVE: The primary surgical techniques used to treat localized renal tumors are laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) and robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN). Obese patients have more intra-abdominal fat accumulation, which may make the localization and operation in minimally invasive surgery more complicated. Currently, limited research has been conducted on which method is more suitable for performing a partial nephrectomy on obese individuals. The aim of our investigation was to analyze and compare the perioperative results associated with both approaches to offer valuable information about the selection of LPN or RAPN as an optimal choice when performing a partial nephrectomy in obese patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively collected clinical data from 78 cases of obese individuals [Body mass index (BMI) > 28] who underwent RAPN, as well as 50 cases of obese individuals (BMI > 28) who underwent LPN. The analysis covered various aspects, including initial patient characteristics, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), warm ischemia time (WIT), operation time, volume of blood loss during the surgical procedure, time taken to recover bowel function, positive surgical margin rate, incidence of postoperative complications, and postoperative hospital stay. RESULTS: We observed that RAPNs exhibited shorter warm ischemia time and reduced intraoperative blood loss in obese patients, along with decreased postoperative duration of abdominal drainage and hospitalization periods compared to LPNs. CONCLUSIONS: In obese patients, RAPN demonstrates advantages over LPN in minimizing intraoperative blood loss, WIT, and facilitating postoperative recovery. These findings may serve as valuable evidence when considering the choice between LPN or RAPN for partial nephrectomy in obese individuals.

The JRODOS (Java-based Real-time Online DecisiOn Support) is a decision support system for off-site emergency management for releases of radioactive material into the environment. This paper documents the application of JRODOS by the Hong Kong Observatory in accident consequence assessment and emergency preparedness studies. For operational considerations, the most computational efficient dispersion model in JRODOS, ATSTEP, is adopted. Verification studies for JRODOS's ATSTEP model have been conducted. Comparison with tracer experiment results showed that under neutral atmospheric conditions and distances up to 50 km, the JRODOS simulation outputs were in general of the same order of magnitude with the tracer data. To further evaluate the capability of JRODOS in short-range simulation, a case study on the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident was also carried out. JRODOS was able to produce realistic simulation results which were comparable to the actual airborne monitoring data of the Cs-137 ground deposition from the Fukushima accident. Furthermore, the results of a comprehensive study to assess the potential consequences of accidents at a nearby nuclear power station are presented. Simulation using the French S3 source term for the Guangdong Nuclear Power Station at Daya Bay showed that the projected effective doses within Hong Kong remain far below the IAEA generic criteria of projected dose for urgent protective actions in sheltering/evacuation, while the projected equivalent dose in thyroid may meet the IAEA generic criteria for use of thyroid blocking agent at some areas in the northeastern part of Hong Kong, at distances of up to about 40 km from Daya Bay depending on the prevailing weather conditions in different seasons.

Marine animals exhibit a variety of biological rhythms, such as solar and lunar-related cycles; however, our current molecular understanding of biological rhythms in marine animals is quite limited. Identifying and understanding the expression patterns of clock genes from available transcriptomes will help elucidate biological rhythms in marine species. Here, we perform a comprehensive survey of phototransduction and circadian genes using the mantle transcriptome of the scallop Patinopecten yessoensis and compare the results with those from three other bivalves. The comparison reveals the presence of transcripts for most of the core members of the phototransduction and circadian networks seen in terrestrial model species in the four marine bivalves. Matches were found for all 37 queried genes, and the expressed transcripts from the deep sequencing data matched 8 key insect and mammalian circadian genes. This demonstrates the high level of conservation of the timekeeping mechanism from terrestrial species to marine bivalves. The results provide a valuable gene resource for studies of "marine rhythms" and also further our understanding of the diversification and evolution of rhythms in marine species.

Aberrantly expressed microRNAs (miRNAs) are frequently correlated with a variety of human cancers, including clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). In this study, we determined the expression patterns of miR-217 in ccRCC, and tested its effect on cancer cell proliferation and migration. The expression levels of miR-217 were determined in 54 ccRCC samples using Real-Time qPCR. 786-O and ACHN cells were transfected with miR-217 mimics or miRNA mimics control. Cell proliferation and migration were evaluated by MTT assay and scratch-wound assay, respectively. We found that miR-217 was down-regulated in ccRCC compared to paired normal tissue. Lower miR-217 expression levels were associated with higher tumor grade and stage. All patients with high miR-217 expression survived 5 years, while with low miR-217 expression, only 40% survived. Cell proliferation inhibition and decreased motility were observed in cells transfected with the miR-217 mimics. In conclusion, miR-217 plays a tumor suppressor role in ccRCC.
