Introduction: This study was conducted to assess the effect of mixed isoacid (MI) supplementation on fermentation characteristics, nutrient apparent digestibility, growth performance, and rumen bacterial community in yaks. Methods: A 72-h in vitro fermentation experiment was performed on an ANKOM RF gas production system. MI was added to five treatments at doses of 0, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, 0.4%, and 0.5% on the dry matter (DM) basis of substrates using a total of 26 bottles (4 bottles per treatment and 2 bottles as the blank). Cumulative gas production was measured at 4, 8, 16, 24, 36, 48, and 72 h. Fermentation characteristics including pH, the concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), microbial proteins (MCP), and the disappearance rate of dry matter (DMD), neutral detergent fiber (NDFD), and acid detergent fiber (ADFD) were measured after a 72-h in vitro fermentation to determine an optimal MI dose. Fourteen Maiwa male yaks (180-220 kg, 3-4 years old of age) were randomly assigned to the control group (without MI, n = 7) and the supplemented MI group (n = 7, supplemented with 0.3% MI on DM basis) for the 85-d animal experiment. Growth performance, nutrient apparent digestibility, rumen fermentation parameters, and rumen bacterial diversity were measured. Results: Supplementation with 0.3% MI achieved the greatest propionate and butyrate content, NDFD and ADFD compared with other groups (P < 0.05). Therefore, 0.3% was used for the animal experiment. Supplementation with 0.3% MI significantly increased the apparent digestibility of NDF and ADF (P < 0.05), and the average daily weight gain of yaks (P < 0.05) without affecting the ruminal concentration of NH3-N, MCP, and VFAs. 0.3% MI induced rumen bacteria to form significantly different communities when compared to the control group (P < 0.05). g__norank_f__Bacteroidales_BS11_gut_group, g__norank_f__Muribaculaceae, g__Veillonellaceae_UCG-001, g__Ruminococcus_gauvreauii_group, g__norank_f__norank_o__RF39 and g__Flexilinea were identified as the biomarker taxa in responding to supplementation with 0.3% MI. Meanwhile, the abundance of g__Flexilinea and g__norank_f__norank_o__RF39 were significantly positively correlated with the NDF digestibility (P < 0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, supplementation with 0.3% MI improved the in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics, feed fiber digestibility, and growth performance in yaks, which was associated with changes of the abundance of g__Flexilinea and g__norank_f__norank_o__RF39.

Heavy metal pollution of soil has become a public concern worldwide since it threats food safety and human health. Sustainable and environmental-friendly remediation technology is urgently needed. Therefore, we investigated the properties and heavy metal removal ability of Enterobacter asburiae G3 (G3), Enterobacter tabaci I12 (I12), and explored the feasibility of remediation Cd, Pb co-contaminated soil by the combination of G3/I12 and biochar. Our results indicated that both strains are highly resistant to Cd, Pb and maintain plant growth-promoting properties. The removal efficiency of G3 for Cd and Pb were 76.79-99.43%, respectively, while the removal efficiency of I12 for Cd and Pb were 62.57-99.55%, respectively. SEM-EDS and XRD analysis revealed that the morphological and structural changes occurred upon heavy metal exposure, metal precipitates were also detected on cell surface. FTIR analysis indicated that functional groups (-OH, -N-H, -C = O, -C-N, -PO4) were involved in Cd/Pb immobilization. Application of the bacteria, biochar, or their combination decreased the acid-extractable Cd, Pb in soil while increased the residual fractions, meanwhile, the bioavailability of both metal elements declined. Besides, these treatments increased soil enzyme (sucrase, catalase and urease) activity and accelerated pakchoi growth, heavy metal accumulation in pakchoi was depressed upon bacteria and/or biochar application, and a synergistic effect was detected when applying bacteria and biochar together. In BC + G3 and BC + I12 treated plants, the Cd and Pb accumulation decreased by 24.42% and 52.19%, 17.55% and 47.36%, respectively. Overall, our study provides an eco-friendly and promising in situ technology that could be applied in heavy metal remediation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Serum alkaline phosphatase has been associated with increased mortality in hemodialysis patients but its associations with mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages III and IV are unknown. Design, settings, participants & measurements: In 1094 participants in the African-American Study of Kidney Disease and Hypertension (AASK) database, the associations of serum alkaline phosphatase with mortality and cardiovascular events were examined in Cox models. RESULTS: The mean (+/-SD) age was 54 +/- 11 yr, and 61% were men. The median alkaline phosphatase was 80 IU/L, and interquartile range was 66 to 97 IU/L. The mean follow-up was 4.6 yr. There were 105 (9.6%) all-cause deaths and 149 (13.6%) cardiovascular events. Each doubling of serum alkaline phosphatase was significantly associated with increased hazard [hazard ratio (HR) 1.60, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.08 -2.36] of all-cause mortality adjusted for demographics, drug and blood pressure groups, and comorbidity. With further adjustment for liver function tests as well as serum calcium and phosphorus, each doubling of serum alkaline phosphatase remained significantly associated with increased mortality (HR 1.55, 95% CI 1.03 to 2.33). Serum alkaline phosphatase was not significantly associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events. CONCLUSIONS: Independent of liver function tests and serum calcium and phosphorus, higher levels of serum alkaline phosphatase are associated with increased mortality in the CKD population. Further studies are warranted to identify the potential mechanisms for this association.

Patients and healthcare workers (HCW) in healthcare settings represent a unique social network in which the risk of transmission of an infection is considered to be higher for both HCW and patients. Using data from existing clinical informatics resources, we constructed social networks of patient-HCW interactions in the emergency department of a tertiary care pediatric hospital. The structural properties of these networks were analyzed and compared to other well known networks. Patient-HCW networks do not demonstrate the classical power-law distribution of scale-free networks, thus indicating that they are different from social networks of individuals in a community. The clustering coefficient is larger as compared to a random network, indicating small world properties. The eigenvector centrality, used to identify the most important nodes, reveals HCW to be more connected than patients. These properties imply differences that must be taken into account when analyzing patient-HCW networks and planning interventions and mitigation strategies to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in healthcare settings.
