AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To describe dyadic psycho-social intervention measures and to evaluate their influence on stroke survivors and caregiver's functional independence, quality of life, depression, anxiety, self-efficacy and coping ability. BACKGROUND: Because of the importance of dyadic intervention and the seriousness of the psycho-social problems of stroke survivors and caregivers, understanding the influence of dyadic psycho-social interventions is vital. DESIGN: A systematic review and meta-analysis based on PRISMA guidelines. DATA SOURCES: Nine databases were systematically searched for randomized controlled trials submitted from 1910 to 4 July 2022. METHODS: The included papers were evaluated for quality, and quantitative data were standardly extracted and analysed by meta-analysis, followed by synthesis. The meta-analysis was carried out using Review Manager 5.4 software. RESULTS: Fifteen randomized controlled trials were included (n = 2190 for patients, and n = 1933 for caregivers). Study results showed that dyadic psycho-social interventions significantly alleviated the depressive symptoms of patients, obviously improved the ability to function independently of patients and more quickly alleviated the care burden of caregivers. CONCLUSIONS: This study provided moderate support for the benefits of dyadic psycho-social intervention in improving survivor and caregiver's functional independence, quality of life, depression, anxiety, self-efficacy and care burden. Nevertheless, due to limitations of the study, it was deemed necessary that this topic is studied further. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This review suggests that dyadic psycho-social interventions should be considered as effective strategies for decreasing psycho-social problems of stroke survivors and caregivers, and provides evidence for the formulation of targeted intervention programs. The personalized implementation of such interventions should be the focus of clinical practice. NO PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: There was no patient or public contribution.

PURPOSE: To evaluate two advanced diffusion models, diffusion kurtosis imaging and the newly proposed mean apparent propagation factor-magnetic resonance imaging, in the grading of gliomas and the assessing of their proliferative activity. METHODS: Fifty-nine patients with clinically diagnosed and pathologically proven gliomas were enrolled in this retrospective study. All patients underwent DKI and MAP-MRI scans. Manually outline the ROI of the tumour parenchyma. After delineation, the imaging parameters were extracted using only the data from within the ROI including mean diffusion kurtosis (MK), return-to-origin probability (RTOP), Q-space inverse variance (QIV) and non-Gaussian index (NG), and the differences in each parameter in the classification of glioma were compared. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of these parameters. RESULTS: MK, NG, RTOP and QIV were significantly different amongst the different grades of glioma. MK, NG and RTOP had excellent diagnostic value in differentiating high-grade from low-grade glioma, with largest areas under the curve (AUCs; 0.929, 0.933 and 0.819, respectively; P < 0.01). MK and NG had the largest AUCs (0.912 and 0.904) when differentiating grade II tumours from III tumours (P < 0.01) and large AUCs (0.791 and 0.786) when differentiating grade III from grade IV tumours. Correlation analysis of tumour proliferation activity showed that MK, NG and QIV were strongly correlated with the Ki-67 LI (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: MK, RTOP and NG can effectively represent the microstructure of these altered tumours. Multimodal diffusion-weighted imaging is valuable for the preoperative evaluation of glioma grade and tumour proliferative activity.

Both sarcopenia and osteoporosis are common geriatric diseases causing huge socioeconomic burdens, and clinically, they often occur simultaneously. Observational studies have found a controversial correlation between sarcopenia and osteoporosis and their causal relationship is not clear. Therefore, we performed a bi-directional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to assess the potential causal relationship between sarcopenia-related traits (hand grip strength, lean mass, walking pace) and osteoporosis. Our analysis was performed by applying genetic variants obtained from the UK Biobank and the GEnetic Factors for OSteoporosis (GEFOS) datasets. We used inverse-variance weighted (IVW) and several sensitivity analyses to estimate and cross-validate the potential causal relationship in this study. We found that bone mineral density (BMD) was causally positively associated with left-hand grip strength (ß = 0.017, p-value = 0.001), fat-free mass (FFM; right leg FFM, ß = 0.014, p-value = 0.003; left arm FFM, ß = 0.014, p-value = 0.005), but not walking pace. Higher hand grip strength was potentially causally associated with increased LS-BMD (right-hand grip strength, ß = 0.318, p-value = 0.001; left-hand grip strength, ß = 0.358, p-value = 3.97 × 10-4). In conclusion, osteoporosis may be a risk factor for sarcopenia-related traits and muscle strength may have a site-specific effect on BMD.

Sarcopenia is a systemic disease with progressive and generalized skeletal muscle dysfunction defined by age-related low muscle mass, high content of muscle slow fibers, and low muscle function. Muscle phenotypes and sarcopenia risk are heritable; however, the genetic architecture and molecular mechanisms underlying sarcopenia remain largely unclear. In recent years, significant progress has been made in determining susceptibility loci using genome-wide association studies. In addition, recent advances in omics techniques, including genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, offer new opportunities to identify novel targets to help us understand the pathophysiology of sarcopenia. However, each individual technology cannot capture the entire view of the biological complexity of this disorder, while integrative multi-omics analyses may be able to reveal new insights. Here, we review the latest findings of multi-omics studies for sarcopenia and provide an in-depth summary of our current understanding of sarcopenia pathogenesis. Leveraging multi-omics data could give us a holistic understanding of sarcopenia etiology that may lead to new clinical applications. This review offers guidance and recommendations for fundamental research, innovative perspectives, and preventative and therapeutic interventions for sarcopenia.

Aim: The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has had serious repercussions worldwide. This study was aimed to evaluate the accuracy of a new kit for detection of SARS-CoV-2 compared with similar detection kit. Materials & methods: A total of 500 subjects were included and tested with both the new test and control kits. Clinical diagnosis results were taken as the reference standard. Results: Compared with clinical diagnosis, the sensitivity of the test kit was 82.64%, specificity was 98.45% and total coincidence rate was 90.80%. The total coincidence rate, sensitivity and specificity between control kit and clinical diagnosis were 89.20%, 78.10% and 99.61%, respectively. Conclusions: The new kit was comparable to the similar detection kit for detection of SARS-CoV-2 in sensitivity, specificity and total coincidence rate.

Memory deficits are considered to have a great influence on self-management, dietary restriction and therapeutic regimen for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients with dialysis treatment. This study was aim to investigate the spontaneous brain activity and its relationship with memory performance in ESRD patients before dialysis (T1) and after 24 h (T2) during a single dialysis session. 23 ESRD patients and 25 matched healthy controls (HCs) were scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at T1, and all patients were also scanned at T2. Amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) methods were used to evaluate the spontaneous brain activity between two groups. The Auditory Verbal Learning Test-Huashan version (AVLT-H) was performed to assess memory function. Compared with HCs, ESRD group showed a significant decreases in the immediate recall total score (IR-S), short-term delayed recall score (SR-S), and long-term delayed recall score (LR-S) at T1. IR-S, SR-S, LR-S and recognition score (REC-S) were significantly increased at T2. Compared with HCs at T1, ESRD patients showed that the lower mean ALFF (mALFF) values were mainly located in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), medial frontal gyrus, and precuneus. Higher ReHo in the bilateral inferior temporal gyrus and left hippocampus and lower ReHo in the right precentral gyrus, anterior cingulate cortex were found at T1 too. The mALFF values of the DLPFC and precuneus were significantly increased during a dialysis session, while no significantly difference of ReHo region was found. Furthermore, the increased mALFF values of the DLPFC were significantly positively correlated with the improvement in the IR-S. Our results indicated that increased regional spontaneous activity of the DLPFC may reflect memory performance improvement after a single dialysis treatment, which may provide insight into the effect of hemodialysis on spontaneous brain function during a single dialysis session.

The basal ganglia (BG) are composed of several nuclei involved in neural processing associated with integration of sensory and motor information. Recent neuroimaging studies implicated its key role in control of voluntary motor function. As the sensorimotor abnormality is common among the end-stage renal disease (ESRD) population, in the current study, we aimed to investigate the abnormal structure and functional connectivity patterns of BG in ESRD patients. Twenty-nine ESRD and twenty-nine age and gender-matched healthy controls (HC) were enrolled to compare the volume of the subsets in the BG (e.g., caudate nucleus, putamen and globus pallidus) by using the VBM analysis; resting-state functional connectivity was analyzed by a seed-based method. Compared with the HC group, ESRD patients had a smaller volume in the right putamen. Taking the right putamen as a seed region, we further found reduced functional connectivity in patients mainly between the putamen and supplementary motor area (SMA), insula, posterior mid-cingulate gyrus, and primary motor cortex. In ESRD group, the severity score of restless legs syndrome was negatively correlated with putamen-SMA functional connectivity, while the hemoglobin level was positively correlated with functional connectivity degree between the putamen and SMA. Our results revealed an abnormal volume of the putamen and its decreased functional connectivity patterns during resting state in ESRD with sensorimotor abnormalities. These preliminary results indicated that the decreased functional connectivity in putamen-SMA was associated with sensorimotor abnormalities, and anemia was correlated with this abnormal functional pattern in ESRD patients.

Neuroimaging studies have demonstrated the critical role of the insula in pain pathways and its close relation with the perceived intensity of nociceptive stimuli. We aimed to identify the structural and functional characteristics of the insula during periovulatory phase in women with primary dysmenorrhea (PDM), and further investigate its association with the intensity of perceived pain during menstruation. Optimized voxel-based morphometry and functional connectivity (FC) analyses were applied by using 3-dimensional T1-weighted and resting functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 36 patients at the peri-ovulation phase and 29 age-, education-, and gender-matched healthy controls (HC). A visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to examine the intensity of the abdominal pain at periovulation and menstruation. In our results, PDM patients had significant higher VAS-rating during menstruaion than periovulation. Compared with the HC, PDM patients had lower gray matter density in the left anterior insula (aINS). Taken the left aINS as a seed region, we further found hypoconnectivity between aINS and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), which showed negative relation with the VAS during menstruation. As the aINS is a key site of the salience network (SN) and the mPFC is a critical region in the default mode network (DMN), it's implicated a trait-related central-alteration that communications between pain attention and perception networks were disrupted without the ongoing menstrual pain. Moreover, result of correlation analysis, at least in part, suggested a possible role of altered FC (pain-free period) in predicting pain perception (menstruation).

RESUMO

The hot shock proteins (HSP) were discovered by Ritossa in the fruit fly salivary gland after heat stimulation, giving the name HSP. In following comprehensive studies, it was recovered that HSP was a group of highly conservative cell stress proteins in all organisms. HSP are expressed under many stress conditions, e.g. in the presence of high temperature, heavy metal, oxygen deficit, ethyl alcohol and viral or bacteria infections, etc. HSP, as the molecular companion, play a vital role in the folding, stability and synthesis of the protein. The lens opacification (cataract) is one of most common causes of blindness in the world. Various studies indicate that the occurrence of cataract is directly related to free radical production, oxidized damage, changes of the proportion of lens protein and apoptosis of lens capsule epithelial cells, etc. Recent studies indicated that the lens expresses a series of HSP. They play a key role in maintaining the stability and transparency of the lens. This article is a summary of the relationship between the HSP and the occurrence of cataract.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects of Tongxinluo capsule (TXL) on the atherosclerosis obliterans (ASO) in iliofemoral artery of rabbits. METHOD: Rabbits were randomly divided into 7 groups: sham, model, TXL (0.8, 0.4, 0.2 g x kg(-1)), Tongsaimai tablet (0.8 g x kg(-1)) and Laishike (0.002 g x kg(-1)). The animal model of ASO was established with a combined method of mechanical trauma, immunologic injury and high fat fodder feeding. Rabbits were administrated the drugs 8 weeks after surgery. The levels of TC, TG, HDL-C and LDL-C in serum were determined at the time points below: pre-experiment (0 week), pre-drug administration (8 weeks post-surgery), 4 weeks after drug administration (12 weeks post-surgery), 8 weeks after drug administration (16 weeks post-surgery), 12 weeks after drug administration (20 weeks post-surgery). Meanwhile, the behavioral study was performed, the distal skin temperature of the injured hind limb detected. The histopathological changes in iliofemoral artery were examined after opacification. RESULT: The levels of TC, TG, LDL-C, VLDL-C and TC/HDL-C were decreased significantly in serum of ASO rabbits. The severity of lameness in the injured hind limb was improved. The distal skin temperature was increased. The thickness and the ratio of intima area of the iliofemoral artery of the injured hind limb were decreased, while the stenosis extent was improved. CONCLUSION: TXL might be beneficial to modulate blood lipid, as well as the prevention and treatment for ASO.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the cardio-protective effects of Corocalm on acute myocardial ischemia in rats, and to explore its possible therapeutic mechanisms. METHODS: The acute ischemic model was prepared by ligating the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery in rats. The animals were divided into 6 groups, 8 in each group. The sham operated group underwent heart exposure without ligation and were treated with normal saline 3 ml/kg, while the other 5 groups, the model groups, consisted of acceptable acute ischemic model rats and were also treated with normal saline, with the Guanxin Capsule (GXC) group treated with refined GXC, 600 mg/kg, the low and high dose Corocalm groups treated with 85 mg/kg and 340 mg/kg of Corocalm respectively, and the Diltiazem group, treated with Diltiazem 5 mg/kg, with all the tested drugs prepared with normal saline into equal volume (3 ml/kg) and administrated once via duodenum 10 min before ligation. Myocardial infarction area was determined by the quantitative histological assay with nitroblue tetrazolium (N-BT) stain. And the levels of creatine phosphokinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in serum were measured by biochemical assay and spectrophotometry respectively. Besides, the blood viscosity in another 50 rats was determined, who received for 7 successive days oral administration with different concentration of Corocalm or aspirin. RESULTS: It showed that low and high dose Corocalm could significantly reduce the infarction area, inhibit the increase of serum CK, LDH activity and MDA content, and enhance the SOD activity after ischemia/reperfusion. The whole blood viscosity at different shear rates in rats treated with high dose Corocalm was significantly lower than those treated with normal saline (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Corocalm has favourable protective effects on heart in ischemic condition, the effect of which might be through its actions in inhibiting CK and LDH activity, scavenging oxygen free radicals, and lowering blood viscosity.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the influence of vitexia-rhamnoside (V-R) on vasomotor factor expression of endothelial cell (EC) damaged by hypoxia and reoxygenation. METHOD: The cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUV ECs) were subject to ischemia and reperfusion following hypoxia and reoxygenation. The levels of ET-1, NO and NOS intracellular in culture supertanants were measured by radioimmunity, Griess and immunohistochemistry, respectively. And the gene expressions of ET-1 and NOS intracellular were measured by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. RESULT: V-R at different doses markedly increased the gene expression and activity of NOS, enhanced the level of vaso-dilating factor NO, and significantly decreased the gene expression and production of vaso-constricting factor ET-1 of EC. CONCLUSION: We have demonstrated that V-R had the regulatory effect on the expression of vaso-active substances of EC damaged by hypoxia and reoxygenation in the levels of protein and gene transcription of cytokines.
