RESUMO

In this paper, we investigate a diffusive viral infection model in a spatial heterogeneous environment with two types of infection mechanisms and distinct dispersal rates for the susceptible and infected target cells. After establishing well-posedness of the model system, we identify the basic reproduction number R0 and explore the properties of R0 when the dispersal rate for infected target cells varies from zero to infinity. Moreover, we demonstrate that the basic reproduction number is a threshold parameter: the infection and virus will be cleared out if R0 ≤ 1, while if R0 > 1, the infection will persist and the model system admits at least one positive (chronic infection) steady state. For the special case when all model parameters are spatial homogeneous, this chronic infection steady state is unique and globally asymptotically stable.

RESUMO

Plasmonic nanostructures with sub-10 nm gaps possess intense electric field enhancements, leading to their high reputation for exploring various functional applications at nanoscale. Till now, although large amounts of efforts have been devoted into investigation of such structures, few works were emphased on the nonlinear optical properties in near-ultraviolet (UV) region. Here, by combining sputtering technique and an optimized anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template growing method, we obtain aluminum (Al) nanorod array film (NRAF) with average rod diameter and gap size of 50 and 7 nm, respectively. The Al-NRAF exhibits large third-order optical nonlinear susceptibility (χ(3)) and high figure of merit (χ(3)/α) over a broad wavelength range from 360 to 900 nm, and reaches their maximums at the shortest measured wavelength. In addition, comparisons with Au-NRAF and Ag-NRAF samples further confirm that Al-NRAF has better nonlinear optical properties in the blue and near-UV wavelength regions. These results indicate that Al nanostructures are promising candidates for nonlinear plasmonic applications at blue and near-UV wavelengths.

RESUMO

Heavy metals and arsenic are well-known carcinogens. However, few studies have examined whether soil heavy metals and arsenic concentrations associate with cancer in the general population. In this ecological study, we aimed to evaluate the association of heavy metals and arsenic in soil with cancer mortality rates during 2005-2010 in Suzhou, China, after controlling for education and smoking prevalence. In 2005, a total of 1683 soil samples with a sampling density of one sample every 4 km(2) were analyzed. Generalized linear model with a quasi-Poisson regression was applied to evaluate the association between town-scale cancer mortality rates and soil heavy metal concentrations. Results showed that soil arsenic exposure had a significant relationship with colon, gastric, kidney, lung, and nasopharyngeal cancer mortality rates and soil nickel exposure was significantly associated with liver and lung cancer. The associations of soil arsenic and nickel exposure with colon, gastric, kidney, and liver cancer in male were higher than those in female. The observed associations of soil arsenic and nickel with cancer mortality rates were less sensitive to alternative exposure metrics. Our findings would contribute to the understanding of the carcinogenic effect of soil arsenic and nickel exposure in general population.

RESUMO

An optical technique is proposed for the accurate calibration of pulsed high magnetic fields utilizing the magnetic field dependent photoluminescence (PL) properties in an Er(3+):YVO(4) single crystal at 80 K. Bright green PL emissions are excited by a 487.5 nm laser line and can be enhanced greatly by a magnetic field at certain field values (B(c)). Since the B(c)'s under 10 T are extremely stable for a given sample at a certain temperature, and the FWHM of the enhancement peaks are less than 0.9 T, an Er(3+):YVO(4) single crystal is proven to be a good candidate for pulsed high magnetic field calibration. The detailed processes and numerous advantages of the technique are presented in this work.

RESUMO

Heavy metal pollution is becoming a serious issue in developing countries such as China, and the public is increasingly aware of its adverse health impacts in recent years. We assessed the potential health risks in a lead-zinc mining area and attempted to identify the key exposure pathways. We evaluated the spatial distributions of personal exposure using indigenous exposure factors and field monitoring results of water, soil, food, and indoor and outdoor air samples. The risks posed by 10 metals and the contribution of inhalation, ingestion and dermal contact pathways to these risks were estimated. Human hair samples were also analyzed to indicate the exposure level in the human body. Our results show that heavy metal pollution may pose high potential health risks to local residents, especially in the village closest to the mine (V1), mainly due to Pb, Cd and Hg. Correspondingly, the residents in V1 had higher Pb (8.14 mg/kg) levels in hair than those in the other two villages. Most of the estimated risks came from soil, the intake of self-produced vegetables and indoor air inhalation. This study highlights the importance of site-specific multipathway health risk assessments in studying heavy-metal exposures in China.
