RESUMO

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare genetic disorder distinguished by multiple arteriovenous malformations that can affect the liver and lungs, and additionally cause high-output heart failure. Effective medical treatment for HHT-related heart failure is limited. While most types of heart failure are contraindications in liver transplants, HHT-related high-output heart failure is an indication for a liver transplant. However, this is rarely performed as it poses a higher-than-average intraoperative risk. We present a case of a 57-year-old female patient with HHT and high-output heart failure from HHT who underwent a successful orthotopic liver transplant to significantly improve her heart function. Incidentally, the patient had a concomitant diagnosis of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) from her explanted liver. We review the literature on liver transplants related to HHT and perioperative risks associated with heart failure and pulmonary hypertension that may be associated with both HHT and PBC.

RESUMO

The new, quaternary diamond-like semiconductor (DLS) Cu4MnGe2S7 was prepared at high-temperature from a stoichiometric reaction of the elements under vacuum. Single crystal X-ray diffraction data were used to solve and refine the structure in the polar space group Cc. Cu4MnGe2S7 features [Ge2S7]6- units and adopts the Cu5Si2S7 structure type that can be considered a derivative of the hexagonal diamond structure. The DLS Cu2MnGeS4 with the wurtz-stannite structure was similarly prepared at a lower temperature. The achievement of relatively phase-pure samples, confirmed by X-ray powder diffraction data, was nontrival as differential thermal analysis shows an incongruent melting behaviour for both compounds at relatively high temperature. The dark red Cu2MnGeS4 and Cu4MnGe2S7 compounds exhibit direct optical bandgaps of 2.21 and 1.98 eV, respectively. The infrared (IR) spectra indicate potentially wide windows of optical transparency up to 25 µm for both materials. Using the Kurtz-Perry powder method, the second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, χ(2), values for Cu2MnGeS4 and Cu4MnGe2S7 were estimated to be 16.9 ± 2.0 pm V-1 and 2.33 ± 0.86 pm V-1, respectively, by comparing with an optical-quality standard reference material, AgGaSe2 (AGSe). Cu2MnGeS4 was found to be phase matchable at λ = 3100 nm, whereas Cu4MnGe2S7 was determined to be non-phase matchable at λ = 1600 nm. The weak SHG response of Cu4MnGe2S7 precluded phase-matching studies at longer wavelengths. The laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) for Cu2MnGeS4 was estimated to be ∼0.1 GW cm-2 at λ = 1064 nm (pulse width: τ = 30 ps), while the LIDT for Cu4MnGe2S7 could not be ascertained due to its weak response. The significant variance in NLO properties can be reasoned using the results from electronic structure calculations.

In addition to increasing the mobility of metal ions in the soil solution, chelating agents such as EDTA have been reported to alter both the total metal accumulated by plants and its distribution within the plant structures. Here, mature Mini-Sun Hybrid dwarf sunflowers exposed to 300 µM Cd(2+) in hydroponic solution had initial translocation rates of at least 0.12 mmol kg(-1)h(-1) and reached leaf saturation levels within a day when a 3-fold molar excess of EDTA was used. EDTA also promoted cadmium transfer from roots to the shoots. A threefold excess of EDTA increased the translocation factor (TF) 100-fold, resulting in cadmium levels in the leaves of 580 µg g(-1) and extracting 1400 µg plant(-1). When plants were exposed to dissolved cadmium without EDTA, the vast majority of the metal remained bound to the exterior of the root. The initial accumulation could be successfully modeled with a standard biosorption pseudo second-order kinetic equation. Initial accumulation rates ranged from 0.0359 to 0.262 mg g(-1)min(-1). The cadmium binding could be cycled, and did not show evidence of saturation under the experimental conditions employed, suggesting it might be a viable biosorbant for aqueous cadmium.

RESUMO

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, (C(6)H(20)N(4))(2)[Sn(2)S(6)], comprises half of a [Sn(2)S(6)](4-) anion and a diprotonated tris-(2-amino-eth-yl)amine cation. The anion lies on an inversion center, while the atoms of the cation occupy general positions. An intra-molecular N-H⋯N hydrogen bond is observed in the cation. In the crystal, strong N-H⋯S hydrogen bonding between the terminal sulfur atoms of the anion and the protonated amine N atoms of the cations result in a three-dimensional network.

Reductive carbonylation of TaCl(5) in the presence of 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) under the appropriate conditions results in the formation of TaCl(CO)(2)(dppe)(2) (1), as the major product, and the possibly cyclic oligomer [TaCl(CO)(2)(dppe)(2)](2)(x)() (2, 2x >/= 4) as a minor product. Carbonylation of 1 (1 atm) results in the rapid but reversible formation of TaCl(CO)(4)(dppe) (3). Solutions of all three compounds exhibit low levels of paramagnetism, possibly attributable to thermal population of low-lying triplet excited states. Crystal data for the toluene solvate of 1, C(68)H(64)ClO(2)P(4)Ta: triclinic, P&onemacr; (No. 2), a = 13.937(12) Å, b = 14.811(7) Å, c = 14.929(9) Å, alpha = 102.30(5) degrees, beta = 95.60(7) degrees, gamma = 98.41(5) degrees, Z = 2.

RESUMO

The effects of onion juice on several characteristics of cooked ground lamb were investigated. Onion juice was a more effective antioxidant than garlic juice in reducing development of rancidity in meat. TBA values for onion-treated samples were lower (P<0.05) after storage when the distillation method of TBA measurement was used. The extraction method may be a less sensitive test for rancidity. Taste panelists were able to discriminate between the onion-treated samples and the control, but onion samples were not preferred (P>.05). Mean hedonic scores were higher (P<0.05) for the onion-treated samples, indicating a more acceptable flavor after storage.
