Thirty-seven holothuroid species, including six potentially new, are reported from the eastern Weddell Sea in Antarctica. Information regarding sea cucumbers in this dataset is based on Agassiz Trawl (AGT) samples collected during the British Antarctic Survey cruise JR275 on the RRS James Clark Ross in the austral summer of 2012. Species presence by site and an appendix of holothuroid identifications with registrations are included as supplementary material. Species occurrence in the Weddell Sea is updated to include new holothuroids from this expedition.

The morphological character of the hydrocladium and gonotheca origin from within the hydrothecal cavity has rarely been applied for generic diagnoses in hydrozoans. Its taxonomic value has been controversial for more than a century. The genus Fraseroscyphus Boero and Bouillon, 1993 (Hydrozoa: Sertulariidae) is a relatively recently debated case and it has been distinguished from Symplectoscyphus Marktanner-Turneretscher, 1890 based on this character. A review of this character in all published nominal species of the family Sertulariidae reveals that its occurrence is inconsistent at the genus level. However, phylogenetic analyses based on mitochondrial (16S) and nuclear (18S, 28S) genes support the position of Fraseroscyphus as a genus within the family Symplectoscyphidae Maronna et al., 2016. Comparisons of 16 morphological characters of 10 related species support the distinction of Fraseroscyphus from Antarctoscyphus and Symplectoscyphus by other characters in addition to the hydrocladial and gonothecal origin character. These new characters include the rarely-branched hydrocaulus, the absence of an apophysis, and the absence of an axillary hydrotheca. Furthermore, a revision based on the morphological character complex mentioned above using type and topotypic material, demonstrated that Sertularella sinuosa Fraser, 1948 (type species of Fraseroscyphus) and Symplectoscyphus huanghaiensis Tang & Huang, 1986 are junior synonyms of F. hozawai (Stechow, 1931) comb. nov. The assignment of Sertularella irregularis Trebilcock, 1928 and Sertularella macrogona Trebilcock, 1928 to Fraseroscyphus is also supported. In addition, sequence polymorphism of mitochondrial genes even within a single hydroid fragment was detected by the molecular cloning method, and is probably in part attributable to errors introduced by PCR, mitochondrial heteroplasmy and/or nuclear mitochondrial DNA (NUMTs). The adoption of the cloning method may be crucial to improve the sequence accuracy for some colonial hydrozoans.

The case put by Alexei Smirnov in 2012 is accepted and the order name Synaptida Cuénot is adopted in place of Apodida Brandt. Two new Synaptida species are described for the Weddell Sea in Antarctica with single author O'Loughlin: Sigmodota magdarogera sp. nov. and Taeniogyrus bamberi sp. nov.. A specimen of Sigmodota magnibacula (Massin & Hétérier) is described. A key is provided for the genera and species of Taeniogyrinae that occur south of the Antarctic Convergence.

Information regarding the echinoids in this dataset is based on the Agassiz Trawl (AGT) and epibenthic sledge (EBS) samples collected during the British Antarctic Survey cruise JR275 on the RRS James Clark Ross in the austral summer 2012. A total of 56 (1 at the South Orkneys and 55 in the Eastern Weddell Sea) Agassiz Trawl and 18 (2 at the South Orkneys and 16 in the Eastern Weddell Sea) epibenthic sledge deployments were performed at depths ranging from ~280 to ~2060 m. This presents a unique collection for the Antarctic benthic biodiversity assessment of an important group of benthic invertebrates. In total 487 specimens belonging to six families, 15 genera, and 22 morphospecies were collected. The species richness per station varied between one and six. Total species richness represents 27% of the 82 echinoid species ever recorded in the Southern Ocean (David et al. 2005b, Pierrat et al. 2012, Saucède et al. 2014). The Cidaridae (sub-family Ctenocidarinae) and Schizasteridae are the two most speciose families in the dataset. They comprise seven and nine species respectively. This is illustrative of the overall pattern of echinoid diversity in the Southern Ocean where 65% of Antarctic species belong to the families Schizasteridae and Cidaridae (Pierrat et al. 2012).
RESUMO
A new fissiparous asterinid seastar Aquilonastra chantalae sp. nov. is described from Europa Island, one of the Scattered Islands (Les îles Éparses) in the Mozambique Channel. It is compared with the fissiparous asterinid Aquilonastra conandae O'Loughlin & Rowe from the Mascarene Islands. A table of distinguishing diagnostic characters is provided. The asterinid Aquilonastra richmondi O'Loughlin & Rowe is reported for Europa Island.

AIM: There were two aims to this study: to investigate the effect of a cochlear implant (CI) on quality-of-life (QOL) for adult recipients in New Zealand; and to determine which aspects of life that these changes are most noticed. METHOD: There were two groups of participants: CI Group - 94 postlingually deafened adult CI recipients; and WL group - 70 postlingually deafened adults on the waiting list (WL) for a CI. Two questionnaires were developed for this study. RESULTS: The results showed that cochlear implantation had a significant positive impact on QOL for recipients. The CI group had significantly higher ratings in all areas of QOL and satisfaction compared to the WL group. CONCLUSION: Overall, high QOL and satisfaction ratings were obtained from CI recipients. The significantly lower ratings from those on the WL for an implant highlight the difficulties experienced by those with a significant hearing impairment. Assessment of CI outcomes should include QOL measures in order to provide a more holistic picture.
