RESUMO

Axis I disorders are one of the major health burdens worldwide. Evidence suggests that Mediterranean diet has key biological factors associated with reducing the progression of these disorders. This systematic review aimed to clarify the relationship between Mediterranean diet and Axis I disorders. PubMed and Scopus databases were searched from January 2016 up to June 2021. Those observational studies in English language that assessed the relationship between Mediterranean diet and Axis I disorders (such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, schizophrenia, etc.) were included in this review. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale was used to evaluate the quality of studies. Thirty-six studies (15 cohorts, 19 cross-sectional, and 2 case-control) met the inclusion criteria. The results revealed that more than two-thirds of the studies (25 studies, 69.44%) had significant protective relationship between receiving Mediterranean diet and reducing the symptoms or incidence of Axis I disorders. Most studies were performed on depression (29 studies measured depression at least as one of the Axis I disorders), of which 72.41% reported an inverse relationship. There were also 9 studies on anxiety (studies that measured anxiety at least as one of the Axis I disorders), that 77.77% of them observed protective association. Moreover, majority of the studies (25 studies, 69.44%) had high quality, of which 76% found an inverse relationship. In conclusion, it seems that the Mediterranean diet can reduce the symptoms or the occurrence of Axis I disorders (especially depression and anxiety). However, more extensive review studies, particularly with interventional designs, are necessary to prove the result.

INTRODUCTION: Aging is a predictable phenomenon that its prevalence is increasing dramatically in the world. There is an association between quality of life, functional independence, and nutritional risk in elderlies, so the aim of the current study is the evaluation of the quality of life and functional independence's effects on nutritional status. METHODS: A total of 160 elderly people that had a hospitalization for at least 6 months in the care home facilities were selected from 2 care home facility centers to participate in the study. Quantitative and qualitative data were gathered using questionnaires for demographic characteristics, health data, eating habits, quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF), functional assessment (Barthel Index), and mini-nutrition assessment (MNA) throughout the face-to-face interview. RESULTS: The overall quality of life score, age, weight, and BMI differed significantly between malnourished and well-nourished subjects. Also, the daily living activity score of subjects who were well-nourished was higher than malnourished participants. Higher daily living activity decreased the risk of being malnourished (OR malnutrition/well-nourished = 0.306, P < 0.001). There was also a significant relationship between BMI (OR malnutrition/well-nourished = 0.731, P = 0.001; OR at-risk/well-nourished = 0.786, P = 0.003) and marital status with MNA score (OR single/married = 1.460, P = 0.001 for malnutrition; OR single/married = 1.183, P = 0.004 for being at risk of malnutrition). CONCLUSIONS: The elderly living in nursing homes are exposed to nutritional risks and mental disorders. So with timely assessment and interventions to improve the quality of life and physical and mental health of elder dwellers, their malnutrition can be prevented.

Herein, we have investigated the toxicity of SWCNTs and MWCNTs in vitro and in vivo, and assessed their therapeutic effects on a typical animal model of breast cancer in order to obtain: first, the cytotoxicity effects of CNTs on MC4L2 cell and mice, second the impact of CNTs on ablation of breast tumor. CNTs especially SWCNTs were toxic to organs and induced death at high dosages. In this case, some of the liver cells showed a relative shrinkage which was also confirmed by Annexin test in MC4L2 cells. Moreover, CNTs decreased the tumor volume. BCL2 gene was down-regulated, and BAX and Caspase-3 were also up-regulated in the treated groups with CNTs. As a result, CNTs especially MWCNT in lower dosages can be used as a promising drug delivery vehicle for targeted therapy of abnormal cells in breast cancer.
