RESUMO

Health literacy is defined as "the degree to which individuals have the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others."1 Individuals with health disparities are more likely to have poor health outcomes and misuse health care services due to low health literacy. This connection between health literacy and health disparities demonstrates the need for clinicians to provide health literate care. Athletic trainers serve as essential points of contact for diverse patient populations in a variety of health care settings. The 2023 Practice Analysis 8 recognizes health literacy as an essential responsibility; however, few practical resources exist, and research specific to athletic training is lacking. In this manuscript, we aim to provide a primer on health literacy definitions, concepts, and best practices adapted from public health to support implementation into athletic training clinical practice.

RESUMO

Concussion screening among collegiate lacrosse athletes is a major safety priority. Although attention has been directed at concussion management following injury, less is known about the association between cognition and balance during preseason screening. The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between balance and neurocognition among collegiate male lacrosse players and to examine predictive determinants of postural stability. Participants included a convenience sample of 49 male collegiate Division 3 lacrosse players who completed a demographic survey and performed the immediate postconcussion test (ImPACT) and instrumented Sensory Organization Test (SOT). There was a significant association between balance SOT performance and both verbal memory (r = .59, p < .01) and visual motor speed scores (r = .43, p < .05). Significant correlations between verbal memory and SOT Conditions 2, 5, and 6 were also noted (all p < .05). Verbal memory predicted 33% of the variance in the SOT composite balance score (p < .001). Our results indicate a significant relationship exists between postural stability and both verbal memory and visual processing speed among collegiate male lacrosse players and supports vestibulocortical associations. Findings warrant ongoing performance and executive function tracking and can serve as a conduit for integrated sensorimotor and dual-task training.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Perceived stress and burnout are significant concerns among athletic trainers (ATs) due to growing professional demands. The global COVID-19 pandemic brought additional stressors, especially for health care providers, including the need to learn and integrate new skill sets in order to continue providing safe and effective patient care. OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of COVID-19 stressors on ATs engaged in patient care. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Internet survey. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: A total of 429 ATs (age = 33 ± 9 years; experience = 11 ± 9 years; 74 men, 355 women) currently providing patient care. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): We recruited participants from social media sites to complete a questionnaire with the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS), Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel (MBI-HSS MP), and qualitative questions related to the effects of COVID-19. We calculated correlations between CAS and MBI-HSS MP composite scores (emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonalization) and used regression analysis to explore if CAS scores could be predicted by vaccination status (vaccinated or unvaccinated), sex, and MBI-HSS MP composite scores. We analyzed the qualitative data using a phenomenological, inductive approach with multianalyst triangulation and peer review as trustworthiness strategies. RESULTS: Significant correlations existed between CAS and MBI-HSS MP composite scores (P < .001). Emotional exhaustion (P < .001) and depersonalization (P = .008) explained 28% of the variance in CAS scores (F2,405 = 81.29, P < .001). Three major areas of focus emerged: effects on wellness, emphasis on the value of athletic training, and the lessons learned and future innovation to inform potential long-term changes in the athletic training profession. CONCLUSIONS: Key factors of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization during the pandemic may have exacerbated the potential for burnout among ATs. The pandemic affected ATs' wellness, changed perceptions of ATs, and altered operating procedures. Healthy coping strategies and organizational support are suggested for those who are struggling.
