RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Platelets are involved in the pathomechanisms of atopic dermatitis (AD). This study aimed to elucidate the levels of platelet-related miRNAs, (miR-24 and miR-191) in the plasma of AD patients and their relationships with the disease severity and laboratory data. METHODS: miRNAs were detected in the subjects plasma using specifically primed quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: The patients with severe AD had significantly higher plasma miR-24 or miR-191 levels than the patients with mild AD, the urticaria patients, and the healthy volunteers. The plasma miR-24 and miR-191 levels of the AD patients were correlated with their serum thymus and activation-regulated chemokine levels. In addition, plasma miR-24 and miR-191 levels were correlated with their plasma levels of platelet factor 4 and ß-thromboglobulin. CONCLUSION: Our findings imply that miR-24 and miR-191 may be involved in the pathomechanisms responsible for the worsening of AD, possibly through their effects on platelet activation.

RESUMO

The number of patients with metal allergies has increased recently, and patch testing is useful for investigating such patients. However, the efficacy of restoration removal in patients with oral metal allergies is disputed. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between oral symptoms and metal allergies. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 60 patients with oral symptoms. The most common oral symptom was an abnormal oral sensation. Thirty-eight percent of the patients exhibited positive allergic reactions to one or more metal. Nickel was the metal allergen that produced positive reactions most frequently. Of the seven patients whose restorations were removed, complete and partial remission were achieved in one and two patients, respectively. Interestingly, metal alloy removal was effective in 33% (n = 1) of the positive patch test group and 50% (n = 2) of the non-positive patch test group. Our results demonstrated the difficulty of predicting the efficacy of restoration removal at ameliorating oral metal allergies based on patch testing alone.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Long-term term survival in patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors has been reported, even in patients with metastatic disease. Metastases to the spleen are extremely rare, but have been reported from a number of primary malignancies, such as breast cancer, lung cancer, melanoma and ovarian cancer. This is the first report of a splenic metastasis from a primary pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient presented as a 53 years old white male with anemia and fatigue. Physical examination revealed a left upper quadrant fullness and computed tomography showed a 24 cm left upper quadrant mass with multiple liver metastases, splenomegaly and a 1 cm mass in the spleen. Resection of the primary pancreatic tumor (T4N0M1) was accompanied by gastrectomy, splenectomy and resection of adherent bowel. The spleen contained a metastatic lesion 1.0 cm in diameter, consistent with a primary neuroendocrine tumor of the pancreas. This operation was followed 8 months later, by delayed resection of liver metastases. The patient receives monthly administration of somatostatin long-acting analogue and has undergone several ablations of liver lesions with percutaneous radiofrequency ablation as well as a second liver resection. The patient is alive seven years after initial presentation, with no evidence of disease on imaging studies. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first report of a splenic metastasis from a primary pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor. The patient initially presented with synchronous multiple liver metastases and a single splenic metastasis. After resection of the primary tumor and spleen, the patient has undergone aggressive cytoreductive surgery/ablation of liver lesions and somatostatin therapy with resulting long-term survival.

RESUMO

Publications and presentations are important in academic medicine. The ability to present information in a standard fashion is critically important. Papers, posters, and slides must be prepared appropriately to maximize their chance of being accepted. The first step is to use word processing software correctly. English language usage must conform to standard scientific English usage. Abbreviations should be avoided as much as possible. Numerical data must be presented with the appropriate number of significant figures. The first step in preparing a paper is to decide the target journal. Papers should always be written in 12 point Times New Roman font, while slides and posters should be in Arial or Helvetica. The Results section must contain actual data with appropriate statistical analysis. Take great care to prepare figures and tables according to the journal's instructions. Posters must be prepared to allow easy reading at a distance of 2m. Use a white background and dark letters. The majority of the area of your poster should be Results, and there is no need to include the abstract or references on a poster. Slide presentations should be limited to about one slide for each minute of the talk. Avoid the use of animations and excessive use of color. Do not use abbreviations on slides. Following these simple guidelines will meet the requirements of most journals and allow your audience to appreciate the data on your posters and slides.
