RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the healing efficacy of topical Aloe vera enhanced by shockwave or ultrasound therapy on wounds in rats and compare both effects. METHOD: A total of 75 male albino rats were randomly divided into equal groups A, B, C, D and E. Under anaesthesia, a wound (6cm2) was created on the back of each rat. Group A received topical Aloe vera under occlusive dressing followed by shockwave therapy with the following parameters: 600 shocks, four pulses/second and 0.11mJ/mm2. Group B received topical Aloe vera under occlusive dressing followed by therapeutic ultrasound with the following parameters: pulsed mode, 2:8 duty cycle, 1MHz and 0.5 W/cm2. Group C received the same treatment as group A but in a reversed sequence-the shockwave therapy followed by the Aloe vera gel. Group D received the same treatment as group B but in a reversed sequence-therapeutic ultrasound followed by the Aloe vera gel. And control group E only received topical Aloe vera under occlusive dressing. Each group received three sessions per week, for two weeks. Wound extent and shrinkage rates were measured at study initiation and at the end of each week. RESULTS: There were significant wound reductions in groups A and B compared to C and D, respectively, and in group A compared to group B. CONCLUSION: Shockwaves and ultrasound were found to amplify the effect of the Aloe vera on the wound, and there was improved wound healing in the shockwave group A compared to the ultrasound group B.

To investigate the effect of two photobiomodulation approaches on trunk flexor performance after incisional hernia repair and to compare the effects of both wavelengths. Forty-five patients were randomly distributed after isokinetic trunk flexor assessments into infrared laser, red laser, and placebo groups. Each patient received laser treatment followed by a traditional physical therapy program. In laser treatment, 24 points in both recti were irradiated by infrared or red laser light with the following parameters; 0.6 J per point, 214.28 J/cm2 as energy density, and 17.85 W/cm2 as intensity, while the control group received a placebo approach. All groups received clinical treatments at a rate of 3 sessions per week for 4 weeks; in addition, the physical therapy program was continued on other days for all groups. Isokinetic trunk flexor strength was measured before treatment and 4 weeks after treatment as in each measurement, fatigue protocol was designed, and the trunk flexor strength was measured before fatigue test while the trunk flexor resistance to fatigue was measured after fatigue test. After 4 weeks, pre-and post-fatigue trunk flexor strengths in both laser groups were significantly increased compared to pre-and post-fatigue trunk flexor strength in the placebo group, respectively, and there was no significant difference between the two laser groups. Photobiomodulation approaches enhance trunk flexor response to exercise after incisional hernia repair. This enhancement leads to greater strength and more fatigue resistance for the trunk flexors in photobiomodulation groups compared to the placebo group and no difference between the two photobiomodulation effects.

RESUMO

[Purpose] The objective of this study was to determine the effect of pulsed high intensity laser therapy on delayed caesarean section healing in diabetic women. [Subjects and Methods] This study was conducted on forty diabetic women with delayed caesarean wound healing, ranging in age from 28 to 38 years. They were randomly assigned into two groups; the group I (n=20) received pulsed high intensity laser therapy for 6-weeks, 3 times per week plus standard medical treatment for treatment of diabetes and caesarean wound patients, the group II (n=20) received sham laser treatment for 6 weeks, 3 times per week plus standard medical treatment for treatment of diabetes and caesarean wound patients. The wound size and appearance in all participants were measured by the tracing method and pressure sore status tool before and after the 6-week treatment. [Results] Pulsed high intensity laser therapy produced a significant difference in wound size and appearance in comparison to the sham laser treatment in diabetic women with delayed caesarean wound healing. [Conclusion] Pulsed high intensity laser therapy is effective in the treatment of delayed caesarean section healing in diabetic women.
