RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Breast implants follow-up with any type of examination is often neglected; this may cause an error or delay in the diagnosis of complications prosthesis-related such as BIA-ALCL. This study aims to better understand adequate follow-up criteria. METHOD: All female patients undergoing aesthetic breast augmentation and breast MRI in its follow-up conducted from April 2006 to December 2019 were included in this study. The variables analyzed were age, breast implant surgery date, time with the implant, reason for the examination, and the final examination report. A logistic regression analysis was conducted to search for the predictors of positive findings in MRI. A Cox Regression analysis and cumulative risk curves, controlled by age, was performed to investigate the relationship between time with implants and the risk of positive findings in MRI. RESULTS: The patients submitted to MRI had complaints in 29.6% of cases, with pain being the most common, 13.9% of cases. In logistic regression analysis, time with the implant was associated with a higher risk of positive findings in univariate analysis (OR = 1.07, p = 0.036), but not in multivariate analysis. Both pain and breast form changes were independent predictors for positive findings in MRI, OR = 2.79, p = 0.04, and OR = 16.98, p < 0.001, respectively. The cumulative risk of positive findings in MRI increased considerably only after 10 years of implantation. CONCLUSIONS: Time with breast implants may be associated with a higher risk of changes in breast MRI examinations, although this relationship was not significant in multivariate logistic regression analysis. The cumulative risk for positive findings seems to increase considerably only after 10 years of implantation. This study draws attention to the paramount importance of follow-up with a clinical breast examination. Despite time with implants or patients' age, both pain and breast form changes were the most important predictors for MRI alterations. RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIM: Identification of changes in specific genes may help new attempts in finding targeted therapy for oesophageal cancer which still has a very poor prognosis. The aim of this study was to investigate CD117 expression in squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus (SCCO). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A preliminary study was performed for CD177 immunoreactivity using a monoclonal antibody against CD117 on 27 SCCO specimens from patients who underwent surgical resection. Specimens of oesophageal mucosa obtained from 10 healthy individuals were studied as a control group. RESULTS: Most patients had TNM American Joint Committee on Cancer stage IIb or III SCCO and mean overall survival was 21 (range=2-72) months. Cytoplasmic membrane CD117 immunoreactivity was demonstrated in only four (15%) out of 27 tumours and in none of the controls. CONCLUSION: Although immunohistochemical expression of CD117 was higher than previously demonstrated, the lack of expression does not warranty further use in targeted therapy of SCCO.

RESUMO

Melanoma incidence has been increasing worldwide. For localized melanoma, the status of the sentinel lymph node is the most important prognostic factor. This study aimed to evaluate the systematization of a technique to identify the sentinel lymph node anatomically by using lymphoscintigraphy and patent blue. Method: A total of 12 cases were studied between March 2009 and March 2012. The treatment protocol followed criteria established by the Brazilian Group of Melanoma. Patients were evaluated for age, sex, thickness of the primary lesion, localization of drainage site ofthe sentinellymph node, and presence ofmetastases. Results: The majority of patients were male and the mean age was 49.7 years. The types of thickness most frequently found were Breslow thickness 0- 1 mm and Clark levei lI. Ali of the dissected lymph nodes were stained with patent blue. Histological and immunohistochemical analysis of the lymph nodes were negative for metastases. Conclusions: The combined use of lymphoscintigraphy and patent blue allows for the precise localization of the sentinel lymph node, with a fast learning curve for surgeons, and low operative morbidity.

Introduction: Over the past 20 years, there has been remarkable improvement in the chances of survival of patients treated in burn centers. Objective: To evaluate the outcomes of severely burned patients treated at a regional burns unit. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of 956 patients with acute burn injuries admitted from January to December of 2006 in the Burns Unit of Hospital de Pronto Socorro de Porto Alegre. Details of demographics, mechanism of burn, extent of burn, length of hospital stay, and mortality rate were recorded. Results: Of 956 burn patients evaluated in this 1-year period, 201 patients were admitted at the burn unit. From this group, 24 patients died from their injuries, yielding a mortality rate of 11,94.
