RESUMO

The aim of this study was to perform an objective assessment of the accuracy of mandibular osteotomy simulations performed using an image-guided sagittal saw. A total of 16 image-guided mandibular osteotomies were performed on four prefabricated anatomical models according to the virtual plan. Postoperative computed tomography (CT) image data were fused with the preoperative CT scan allowing an objective comparison of the results of the osteotomy executed with the virtual plan. For each operation, the following parameters were analyzed and compared independently twice by two observers: resected bone volume, osteotomy trajectory angle, and marginal point positions. The mean target registration error was 0.95±0.19mm. For all osteotomies performed, the mean difference between the planned and actual bone resection volumes was 8.55±5.51%, the mean angular deviation between planned and actual osteotomy trajectory was 8.08±5.50°, and the mean difference between the preoperative and the postoperative marginal point positions was 2.63±1.27mm. In conclusion, despite the initial stages of the research, encouraging results were obtained. The current limitations of the navigated saw are discussed, as well as the improvements in technology that should increase its predictability and efficiency, making it a reliable method for improving the surgical outcomes of maxillofacial operations.

RESUMO

Sclerosing haemangioma of the lung is a very rare tumour, occurring in young female patients, especially those coming from the Orient. Authors report a case that can cause a major diagnostic problem, especially in the frozen section. Imprint cytology may be helpful in reaching the final suggestion to the surgeon.

RESUMO

Five men aged 55-78 years, had received Casodex 50 mg p.o. daily for seven to 12 months. Because of tumour progression orchiectomy was performed. All testes were examined with light- and electronmicroscopy. Evidence of Leydig cell hyperplasia was present in testes from three patients. However, the ultrastructural appearance of the Leydig cells was normal. The spermatogenesis was reduced in all testes, although not significantly different from controls. We believe the Leydig cell hyperplasia reflects an increased proliferative stimulation by luteinizing hormone or a direct effect of Casodex.

RESUMO

We report the cases of four patients with testicular injury following blunt scrotal trauma, and present a system of classification for testicular injuries. One patient had a rupture of tunica albuginea and three had intratesticular haematomas. Two patients were operated on with uneventful postoperative courses. Two patients with intratesticular injury were not explored. Both testes atrophied. We fear that many testes atrophy because of damage caused by pressure of intratesticular bleeding. Qualified surgical evaluation shortly after testicular injuries is of utmost importance for the prognosis.

RESUMO

This is a case report of an intraorbital tumour found soon after delivery in otherwise normal girl. The clinical manifestation were so intensive that the operation was performed within 24 hours after birth. Histologically a benign teratoma presenting almost all possible tissues was diagnosed. In the follow up the girl's bilateral eye-function was satisfactory and she was doing well.

RESUMO

The authors examined 23 brains of female patients who died during pregnancy or after delivery. Four clinical groups were distinguished: 1. sepsis, 2. gestosis, 3. patients with cardiac diseases, 4. other cases of death. General autopsy on all the dead patients was performed. Macroscopically the brain revealed the signs of oedema and herniationes. Microscopic findings showed in the sepsis and gestosis groups, distinct changes in small blood vessels. Their walls were often statified and impregnated with fibrin. In the cases with the DIC syndrome microthrombosis could be seen. Only in 2 patients cerebral arterial occlusion was noted. Neurons revealed the secondary changes described as anoxic encephalopathy.

RESUMO

The NK/Ly ascites tumor transplanted into the brain of mice is well accepted and the growth is similar to that of malignant lymphomas in the human brain. The authors studied the incorporation of the tritiated thymidine in the malignant lymphoma cells transplanted into brain of the mouse by autoradiographic method.

RESUMO

The NK/Ly ascites tumour inoculated into the brain of a mouse is well adapted and grows, causing clinical symptoms similar to a primary tumour of the brain. The clinical and histological features of the cerebral growth of the NK/Ly tumor (Nemeth-Kellner Lymphoma, 1960) are discribed. These features entitle us to treat NK/Ly tumour growth, transplated into the brains of mice as a model of malignant lymphoma in the C.N.S.
