BACKGROUND: Based on contradictory findings concerning the use of lasers for enamel etching, the purpose of this study was to investigate the shear bond strength of teeth prepared for bonding with Er-YAG laser etching and compare them with phosphoric acid etching. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this in vitro study forty - eight premolars, extracted for orthodontic purposes were randomly divided in to three groups. Thirty-two teeth were exposed to laser energy for 25 s: 16 teeth at 100 mj setting and 16 teeth at 150 mj setting. Sixteen teeth were etched with 37% phosphoric acid. The shear bond strength of bonded brackets with the Transbond XT adhesive system was measured with the Zwick testing machine. Descriptive statistics, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, of homogeneity of variances, one- way analysis of variances and Tukey's test and Kruskal Wallis were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: The mean shear bond strength of the teeth lased with 150 mj was 12.26 ± 4.76 MPa, which was not significantly different from the group with acid etching (15.26 ± 4.16 MPa). Irradiation with 100 mj resulted in mean bond strengths of 9.05 ± 3.16 MPa, which was significantly different from that of acid etching (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: laser etching at 150 and 100 mj was adequate for bond strength but the failure pattern of brackets bonded with laser etching is dominantly at adhesive - enamel interface and is not safe for enamel during debonding.

OBJECTIVES: As enamel bond strength of the resin-modified materials is reduced after bleaching, a delay bonding of at least 1 week is recommended. This study investigated the efficacy of 10% sodium ascorbate hydrogel on the bond strength of bleached enamel as an antioxidant agent. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-six human, sound molars divided into eight groups. Buccal enamel surfaces of specimens in two negative control groups after preparation were bonded by the Z100 CR using the single-bond adhesive and Vitremer RmGI. Specimens in other groups after enamel preparation were bleached with 9.5% hydrogen peroxide. In two positive control groups, bonding of CR and RmGI was performed immediately after bleaching. Specimens in two other groups were immersed in distilled water after bleaching, and then CR and RmGI were bonded after 1 week. In last two groups, 10% sodium ascorbate hydrogel was applied after bleaching, and then they were bonded by CR and RmGI. The specimens were placed under shear force. STATISTICS: ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range tests were used for data analysis. RESULTS: Application of 10% sodium ascorbate hydrogel immediately before bonding and delay bonding for 1 week eliminated the negative effects of bleaching on CR and RmGI enamel bond strength. CONCLUSION: Application of 10% sodium ascorbate hydrogel or 1 week period elapsed after bleaching could significantly increase the enamel bond strength to a normal value.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of an antimicrobial and fluoride-releasing self-etch primer (clearfil protect bond) and compare it with transbond plus self-etch primer and conventional acid etching and priming system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight extracted human premolars were divided randomly to three groups. In group 1, the teeth were bonded with conventional acid etching and priming method. In group 2, the teeth were bonded with clearfil protect bond self-etch primer, and transbond plus self-etch primer was used to bond the teeth in group 3. The samples were stored in 37°C distilled water and thermocycled. Then, the SBS of the sample was evaluated with Zwick testing machine. Descriptive statistics and the analysis of variances (ANOVA) and Tukey's test and Kruskal-Wallis were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: The results of the ANOVA showed that the mean of group 3 was significantly lower than that of other groups. Most of the sample showed a pattern of failure within the adhesive resin. CONCLUSION: The shear bond strength of clearfil protect bond and transbond plus self-etch primer was enough for bonding the orthodontic brackets. The mode of failure of bonded brackets with these two self-etch primers is safe for enamel.
