RESUMO

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs), lipids and lipoproteins and antioxidant enzymes are involved in the development of diabetic retinopathy (DR). AGEs and modified Apolipoprotein-B (Apo-B) lead to the formation of reactive oxygen species causing damage to the retina leading to DR. Zinc has antioxidant properties and protects the retina against reactive oxygen species. The current study aimed to compare the levels of serum AGEs, Apo-B and zinc in non-diabetics and type II diabetics without and with DR. Serum AGEs and Apo-B were measured by ELISA while zinc was measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The impact of all three markers on the severity of DR was calculated, individually as well as together as a model, to determine the relationship of these markers with severity of diabetic retinopathy. Regression analysis showed that AGEs, Apo-B and zinc were all contributing significantly to the severity of DR, together having an 82.8% impact on it (R2=0.828). The model of the three parameters was best fit to indicate the severity of DR (p-value = 0.553). This study provides a basis for further validation of the suggested model with prospective studies which can then be used in clinical setups to predict the individuals at risk.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The outbreak of COVID-19, a profoundly contagious disease has unnerved the world in a calamitous manner from diverse aspects. The present study ventures to expand the literature by exploring loneliness, social isolation, risk perception, financial distress, and psychological distress amidst the lockdown phase of the general population of Bangladesh. METHODS: Through an online survey among 474 respondents (between April 17th and April 23rd, 2020), data were collected from the Bangladeshi residents (21 years or above). Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were conducted using IBM Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and Warp-PLS. RESULTS: Findings suggest a strong positive correlation among the factors and social isolation, risk perception, financial distress are manifested as the predictors of psychological distress. Besides, females, aged people, and lower-income group are found to be more psychologically distressed. CONCLUSION: This study yields new insights into the psychological facets of a lower-middle-income earning country, Bangladesh.

RESUMO

AIM: To explore the influence of leader emotional intelligence on the working culture prevailing in teams that ultimately impacts nurses' intent to leave the job. BACKGROUND: Global shortages of nursing professionals have been concerning issues of extreme vitality in the delivery of superior services. Though the state-of-the-art system provides relief, the hospital management continued worrying about losing highly skilled nursing professionals due to a higher level of emotional exhaustion exhibiting progressive turnover. METHODS: A survey technique was employed for data collection from nurses. Further data were analysed by structural equation modelling in the light of 313 substantial responses by using SmartPLS. RESULTS: The findings revealed that leader emotional intelligence impulses critical constructive effects by fulfilling the needs of nurses and has an impact on their turnover intentions simultaneously. CONCLUSION: The research provides an empirical lens of leadership and culture, which noticeably explain turnover intention. This study affirmed solid connections amongst the leader emotional intelligence, team culture and turnover intentions. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT: The study provides valuable insight for health management organisations to focus on factors that decrease the turnover intention of nurses. Considering a global shortage of nurses, nursing management must consider crucial aspects of the work environment and plan interventions to restrain nursing turnover intentions.
