RESUMO

The study on robot-assisted therapy in a pediatric field has not been applied sufficiently in clinical settings. The purpose of this pilot study is to explore the potential therapeutic effects of a group robot intervention (GRI), using dog-like social robot (SR) 'aibo' in pediatric ward. GRI by aibo was conducted for those children with chronic illness (127 in total) who are hospitalized in National Centre for Child Health and Development (NCCHD), and their caregivers (116 in total), from March to April 2018. The observer made structured behavioural observation records, based on which qualitative research on the features of their words and conducts, were carried out. As a result, first, during the GRI, about 2/3 of total expression by children were positive, while about 1/4 were negative or inappropriate. On the other hand, as seen in the 'change' group, those children who had originally responded with negative expression eventually came to express positive expression, while getting involved in a ternary relationship or participating in a session more than once. Secondly, as for the expression from the caregivers during the GRI, active expressions such as 'participation' and 'exploration' accounted for the 2/3, while 1/3 turned out to be rather placid expressions such as 'watch over' or 'encourage.'Conclusion: There has not been any precedent study on the features of words and conducts expressed by patients and their caregivers during the GRI by aibo. The outcome suggests that aibo could possibly be used as a tool for group robot-assisted therapy in the pediatric treatment setting. What is Known: • The study on robot-assisted therapy in a pediatric field has only just begun. • Though many kinds of social robot have been reportedly used so far, none has yet to be applied in clinical settings What is New: • Our study revealed the features of words and behaviour expressed by the patients and their caregivers, when dog-like social robot 'aibo' was used for a group robot intervention in the pediatric ward. • The outcome suggests that aibo could possibly be used as a tool for group robot-assisted therapy in the pediatric treatment setting.

Lower limb amputees (LLAs) have less skin surface required for sweating; thus, the ability to dissipate heat from the body may decrease and the risk of heat illness may increase during exercise in a hot environment. However, no study has compared the thermoregulatory responses during exercise between LLAs and able-body (AB) individuals with different body surface areas. This study aimed to compare the thermoregulatory responses of LLAs with those of AB individuals during exercise in a hot environment. Seven LLAs (LLA group) and 7 able-body individuals (AB group) participated in the study. A 60% peak power output of arm crank upper-body exercise was performed for 60 min in a hot environment (32 °C, 50% relative humidity). There was no difference in the increase in rectal temperature (LLA: 0.8 ± 0.2 °C, AB: 0.8  ± 0.2 °C) and mean skin temperature between the groups during the 60-min exercise. In the LLA group, the accumulated local sweat rate of the thigh during exercise was significantly higher on the non-cut side than on the cut side (64.6 ± 43.0 mg/h vs. 37.0 ± 27.2 mg/h, p < 0.05). The total sweat rate was significantly higher in the LLA group than in the AB group (1.18 ± 0.37 kg/h vs. 0.84 ± 0.10 kg/h, p < 0.05). Thermal sensation and comfort were lower in the LLA group than in the AB group. Different heat loss responses were observed in the AB and LLA groups during exercise in the heat. The LLA group compensates for sweating on the cut side due to an increase in sweat loss on the intact limb, thereby preserving appropriate thermoregulation during exercise.

In recent years, mirror visual feedback (MVF) therapy combined with electrical stimulation (ES) have been proposed for patients with hemiparesis. However, the neurophysiological effect remains unknown. We investigated the effects of MVF by itself and along with electromyogram-triggered ES (ETES) on hemodynamic responses using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Eighteen healthy subjects participated in this study. We measured changes in brain oxygenation using 48 NIRS channels. We investigated the effects of three main factors of visual feedback (observation of a mark, right hand, and hand movements via mirror) with or without ES on bilateral precentral gyrus (PrG), postcentral gyrus (PoG), supplementary motor area (SMA), supramarginal gyrus area (SMG), and angular gyrus (AG) to determine the contribution of each factor. The results showed that the left PoG was significantly more activated when performing mirrored tasks (MT) than when performing circle or Right-hand Tasks (RTs). In addition, the right PoG and right SMA in MT were significantly more activated than in MT + ES cases. Our findings suggested that observation of movements through the mirror caused activation of the postcentral gyrus rather than the PrG, and MVF along with ETES decreased cortical activation.

A topological analysis of the experimental electron density in racemic ethylenebis(1-indenyl)zirconium dichloride, C20H16Cl2Zr, measured at 100 (1) K, has been performed. The atomic charges calculated by the numerical integration of the electron density over the zero-flux atomic basins demonstrate the charge transfer of 2.25 e from the Zr atom to the two indenyl ligands (0.19 e to each) and two Cl atoms (0.93 e to each). All the atomic interactions were quantitatively characterized in terms of the electron density and the electronic energy-density features at the bond critical points. The Zr-C2 bond paths significantly curved towards the C1-C2 bond were found; no other bond paths connecting the Zr atom and indenyl ligand were located. At the same time, the pi-electrons of the C1-C2 bond are significantly involved in the metal-ligand interaction. The electron density features indicate that the indenyl coordination can be approximately described as eta1 with slippage towards eta2. The ;ligand-opposed' charge concentrations around the Zr atom were revealed using the Laplacian of the electron density and the one-particle potential; they were linked to the orbital representations. Bonds in the indenyl ligand were characterized using the Cioslowski-Mixon bond-order indices calculated directly from the experimental electron density.
