Two new methods for elimination of bronchial fistulas in postresectional empyemas were tested in 40 patients. The most effective procedure was transbronchial diathermocoagulation of the draining (fistular) bronchus, with a full clinical effect being in 100% of patients), and selective foam rubber obturation in 80%.

It has been shown that a single intraperitoneal injection of dextran sulfate (molecular weight 500 000, 60 mg/kg) to (CBA X C57BL)F1 mice 1-3 days before irradiation in lethal doses, with the irradiation dosage amounting to 8.10(-3), 3.10(-3) and 8.10(-4) Gy/c, increases the animals' survival rate. The effect of dextran sulfate on the degree of postradiation changes in the blood leukocyte count and in the bone marrow karyocyte count depends on the interval between dextran sulfate injection and irradiation.

In experiments on (CBA X C57Bl)F1 mice irradiated with doses of 8-12 Gy a study was made of the effect of a mixture of polyI-polyC (2.5 mg/kg, 2 days before irradiation) and mexamine (30 mg/kg, 5 min before irradiation) on the survival rate of animals and the times of their death. It was shown that polyI-polyC potentiates the protective effect of mexamine not increasing its toxicity. The protective agents used in a combination decrease the "intestinal" death of irradiated animals while used separately fail to produce this effect.

Single intraperitoneal administration of dextran sulfate to noninbred mice at a dose of 60 mg/kg 3--24 and 48 hours prior to irradiation in lethal and sublethal doses exerts no radioprotective action. Administration of the drug 24 hours before irradiation increases the intensity of postradiation leukopenia. During irradiation of the animals in a dose of 650 rad dextran sulfate accelerates the recovery of hemopoiesis. With the dose of irradiation being increased up to 750 rad, the drug produces no effect on this parameter.
