OBJECTIVES: to develop a plan of action in order to improve care and accessibility in a Basic Health Area in Girona. METHODOLOGY: the strategic plan put forward was created starting with the identification of areas of improvement through the SWOT technique (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats). Once said areas had been prioritized, the improvement interventions were defined; these were approved by consensus by the Healthcare Quality Team formed for the establishment of the plan. This team defined the assessment indicators for the suggested interventions, which were finally analyzed at 3 years from the start of the process. The priority intervention area was the accessibility of the center to users. RESULTS: from January, 2009 to July, 2012, an increase in the number of users has been observed (14.4%) as well as of the patient workload (7.7%) in all Healthcare Basic Units. There was a mean 42% improvement in accessibility in all units CONCLUSIONS: the strategic plan implemented has increased the quality of care, has helped to achieve an agile and effective care with citizens, as well as to improve the internal organization among the different professionals in the Primary Care teams

Through the construct "The sense of coherence" (SOC), the salutogenic model explains why people subjected to stressors are able to maintain good health. The SOC was defined by Antonovsky as a global orientation that expresses the extent to which a person has a highly internalized, permanent - but at the same time dynamic - feeling of confidence; this feeling of confidence is predictable and leads to a high probability that events will turnout well. The present article reviews the literature on the SOC in the nursing profession. The results show that the SOC is a protective factor against stressors in the work environment and in the work-life balance. Low SOC levels are associated with health problems such as burnout or depression, as well as certain personality traits (AU)
