RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to explore time-dependent dimensional stability of three different elastomeric impression materials - vinyl polyether silicone (VPES), vinyl polysiloxane (VPS), and polyether (PE) - through micro-computerized tomography (µ-CT) imaging, allows three-dimensional (3D) imaging and measurement without sample preparation or chemical fixation. Materials and Methods: Thirty specimens were created using 3 mm high, 30 mm wide Teflon molds (n = 10). Specimens were scanned with µ-CT on the 1st (T1) h and 1st (T2), 7th (T3), and 14th (T4) days. 3D models were created at the above-mentioned times, volumetric measurements were conducted and dimensional changes were calculated. Diameters and heights of each impression material were measured with 2D analyses. Furthermore, contact angle measurements of these elastomeric impression materials were collected using the sessile drop method during and after polymerization at 0, 2, 5, 20, 60, 120, and 240 s These measurements were made on specimens (n = 10) prepared in standard sizes using a 50 µm deep stainless steel die with dimensions of 62 mm × 20 mm × 3 mm. RESULTS: Evaluation of the dimensional volume changes of the VPES, VPS, and PE measurements showed there to be no statistically significant differences between the T1, T2, T3, and T4 (P > 0.05). Only the decreases in the volume averages of T3 and T4 in the VPES were statistically significant (P < 0.05). As a result of binary comparisons, the evaluation of contact angle measurements of VPES, VPS, and PE materials during and after polymerization were compared. The average contact angle measurements of the VPS group were statistically significantly lower than the averages of the VPES and PE groups (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: VPS was found to be the most stable impression material concerning dimensional change and wettability.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether symptoms of urinary incontinence is reduced by pelvic floor muscle training, to determine whether urinary incontinence can be totally eliminated by strengthening the pelvic floor muscle to grade 5 on the Oxford scale. DESIGN: Prospective randomized controlled clinical trial. SETTING: Outpatient urogynecology department. SUBJECTS: One hundred thirty cases with stress and mixed urinary incontinence. INTERVENTION: All participants were randomly allocated to the pelvic floor muscle training group or control group. A 12-week home based exercise program, prescribed individually, was performed by the pelvic floor muscle training group. MAIN MEASURES: Urinary incontinence symptoms (Incontinence Impact Questionnaire-7, Urogenital Distress Inventory-6, bladder diary, stop test and pad test) were assessed, and the pelvic floor muscle strength was measured for (PERFECT testing, perineometric and ultrasound) all participants before and after 12 weeks of treatment. RESULTS: The pelvic floor muscle training group had significant improvement in their symptoms of urinary incontinence (P=0.001) and an increase in pelvic floor muscle strength (P=0.001, by the dependent t test) compared with the control group. All the symptoms of urinary incontinence were significantly decreased in the patients that had reached pelvic floor muscle strength of grade 5 and continued the pelvic floor muscle training (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The study demonstrated that pelvic floor muscle training is effective in reducing the symptoms of stress and mixed urinary incontinence and in increasing pelvic floor muscle strength.

RESUMO

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: There is increasing use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in orthopaedics as it is a simple, cheap and minimally invasive technique. This study aimed to compare the effects of the use of PRP and hyaluronic acid (HA) injections in the knee of patients diagnosed with and being followed-up for degenerative arthritis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study included 90 patients with complaints of knee pain with findings of mild or moderate degenerative arthritis. In the PRP group (n=45), one intra-articular injection was applied and in the HA group (n=45), three doses of intra-articular injection were applied. Clinical evaluation was made by Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) and a visual pain scale. RESULTS: No severe adverse events was observed. Statistically significant better results in the KOOS score and visual pain scale was determined in PRP group than HA group at 3 months and 6 months follow up. The cost of the application for the PRP group was lower than that of the HA group. CONCLUSION: The results of this study have shown the application of single dose PRP to be a safe, effective and low-cost method for treating OA. However, further studies are required for a more clear result.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate iron status and its relationships with lipid peroxidation in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS: The study included 30 male patients aged between 32 and 73 years (mean 55 +/- 6) with acute MI. We measured the levels of plasma iron, transferrin (TF), ferritin (FER), ceruloplasmin (CER), cardiac enzymes, and erythrocyte malondialdehyde (e-MDA) in patients with acute MI on the admission and 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 15th, 45th post MI day and investigated the variations of these parameters in acute MI. RESULTS: The e-MDA level started to increase on the admission day and showed a peak value on the post MI 1st day (88 +/- 23 and 98 +/- 26 nmol/g Hb, respectively). Afterwards, the e-MDA level minimally changed until post Ml 45th day, which showed a minimum level (57 +/- 13 nmol/g Hb) (p < 0.05). In addition, the iron concentration of serum reached its maximum level on the 1st post Ml day (99 +/- 30 mg/dl, p < 0.05) and relatively decreased after the 3rd day. Courses of MDA and iron levels were similar. The FER level started to increase from the admission day of the patients (230 +/- 375 mg/dl), showed a mean peak value on the 3rd day (296 +/- 568 mg/dl) and decreased to a minimum level on the 45th day (121 +/- 85 mg/dl) (p < 0.05). Contrarily, the TF level started to decrease on the 1st day (221 +/- 44 mg/dl), decreased minimum level on the 3rd day (211 +/- 37 mg/dl) and continued approximately the same level until the 45th day (244 +/- 45 mg/dl) (p < 0.05). The CER level started to increase from the first day of admission of the patients (43 +/- 12 mg/dl), reached a maximum level on the 7th day (59 +/- 12 mg/dl) and similar levels were observed until the 15th day. On the 45th day, the CER level was higher than on the first day (52 +/- 13 mg/dl) (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: There was an association of higher iron status with increased lipid peroxidation in patients with myocardial infarction.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Behçet's disease is a chronic multisystemic disorder which is characterized by a relapsing systemic inflammatory process. One of the features of Behçet's disease is endothelial dysfunction resulting from many factors. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: We conducted this study to show if there is any change of plasma nitrite and nitrate levels by using the enzymatic-spectrophotometric method as an indicator for nitric oxide (NO) production, considering the disease activity in patients with Behçet's disease. The study group consisted 21 patients and 20 healthy control subjects. We measured plasma nitrite and nitrate levels, and some acute-phase reactants including erythrocyte sedimentation rate, alpha-1-antitrypsin, alpha-2-macroglobulin and the neutrophil count. Blood samples were drawn before and after treatment of the patients. RESULTS: Nitrite, nitrate and nitrite + nitrate levels in the active period of the disease were found to be decreased compared to the inactive period and the control group. No significant differences were observed in plasma nitrite and nitrate levels between the inactive period and the control group. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that decreased NO production in patients with Behçet's disease may have critical biological activities relevant to pathologic events in the active period of the disease.
