Ecosystem services (ES) are becoming a burgeoning topic presently playing a crucial role in sustaining human well-being, socioeconomic growth, and addressing environmental management and sustainability. The purpose of our review was to overview research trends of the forest ecosystem services (FES) in eastern India and the research methodologies adopted to evaluate them. To systematically study the FES literature, 127 articles pertaining to the term FES during the period 1991 to 2021 were reviewed through a quantitative analysis. The analytical outcome emphasized (1) the research aspects of FES and its types along with regional distribution, (2) the scenario of FES in eastern India with respect to other ES and India, (3) the quantitative trend of FES research over 30 years period, (4) the employed methodological approaches, and (5) the existing research gaps and prospects. Our findings suggest that the publication numbers are quite low in eastern India, as only 5 peer-reviewed articles were found on FES. The result also indicated that the majority of studies primarily focused on provisioning services (85.03%) and the survey/interview method gained more popularity as a primary data source. Most of the earlier studies employed basic assessments like product values or individual income. We also discussed the advantages as well as limitations of the employed methodologies. These findings further highlight the significance of valuing various FES collectively rather than individually and contribute to providing pertinent information for the FES literature scenario, which may help to strengthen forest management as well.

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a membranous organelle involved in calcium storage, lipid biosynthesis, protein folding and processing. Many patho-physiological conditions and pharmacological agents are known to perturb normal ER function and can lead to ER stress, which severely compromise protein folding mechanism and hence poses high risk of proteotoxicity. Upon sensing ER stress, the different stress signaling pathways interconnect with each other and work together to preserve cellular homeostasis. ER stress response is a part of the integrative stress response (ISR) and might play an important role in the pathogenesis of chronic neurodegenerative diseases, where misfolded protein accumulation and cell death are common. The initiation, manifestation and progression of ER stress mediated unfolded protein response (UPR) is a complex procedure involving multiple proteins, pathways and cellular organelles. To understand the cause and consequences of such complex processes, implementation of an integrative holistic approach is required to identify novel players and regulators of ER stress. As multi-omics data-based systems analyses have shown potential to unravel the underneath molecular mechanism of complex biological systems, it is important to emphasize the utility of this approach in understanding the ER stress biology. In this review we first discuss the ER stress signaling pathways and regulatory players, along with their inter-connectivity. We next highlight the importance of systems and network biology approaches using multi-omics data in understanding ER stress mediated cellular responses. This report would help advance our current understanding of the multivariate spatial interconnectivity and temporal dynamicity of ER stress.

Identification of the genomic diversity and the phylodynamic profiles of prevalent variants is critical to understand the evolution and spread of SARS-CoV-2 variants. We performed whole-genome sequencing of 54 SARS-CoV-2 variants collected from COVID-19 patients in Kolkata, West Bengal during August-October 2020. Phylogeographic and phylodynamic analyses were performed using these 54 and other sequences from India and abroad that are available in the GISAID database. We estimated the clade dynamics of the Indian variants and compared the clade-specific mutations and the co-mutation patterns across states and union territories of India over the time course. Frequent mutations and co-mutations observed within the major clades across time periods do not show much overlap, indicating the emergence of newer mutations in the viral population prevailing in the country. Furthermore, we explored the possible association of specific mutations and co-mutations with the infection outcomes manifested in Indian patients.

The novel coronavirus 2 (nCoV2) outbreaks took place in December 2019 in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. It continued to spread worldwide in an unprecedented manner, bringing the whole world to a lockdown and causing severe loss of life and economic stability. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has also affected India, infecting more than 10 million till 31st December 2020 and resulting in more than a hundred thousand deaths. In the absence of an effective vaccine, it is imperative to understand the phenotypic outcome of the genetic variants and subsequently the mode of action of its proteins with respect to human proteins and other bio-molecules. Availability of a large number of genomic and mutational data extracted from the nCoV2 virus infecting Indian patients in a public repository provided an opportunity to understand and analyze the specific variations of the virus in India and their impact in broader perspectives. Non-structural proteins (NSPs) of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) virus play a major role in its survival as well as virulence power. Here, we provide a detailed overview of the SARS-CoV2 NSPs including primary and secondary structural information, mutational frequency of the Indian and Wuhan variants, phylogenetic profiles, three-dimensional (3D) structural perspectives using homology modeling and molecular dynamics analyses for wild-type and selected variants, host-interactome analysis and viral-host protein complexes, and in silico drug screening with known antivirals and other drugs against the SARS-CoV2 NSPs isolated from the variants found within Indian patients across various regions of the country. All this information is categorized in the form of a database named, Database of NSPs of India specific Novel Coronavirus (DbNSP InC), which is freely available at http://www.hpppi.iicb.res.in/covid19/index.php.

In the present investigation, the supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extracts of small cardamom (SC) and yellow mustard (YM) seeds have been investigated for their efficacies in combating type 2 diabetes in streptozotocin-induced Wistar albino rats. Fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels in the rats were monitored on days 8, 15 and 21. On day 15, FBG level reduced appreciably by 31·49 % in rats treated with SC seed extract and by 32·28 % in rats treated with YM seed extract, comparable to metformin (30·70 %) and BGR-34 (a commercial polyherbal drug) (31·81 %) administered rats. Either extract exhibited desirable effects on hepatic glucose-6-phosphatase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and catalase activities in controlling diabetes. A molecular docking exercise was conducted to identify specific compounds in the extracts which possessed augmenting effect on G6PD. The results revealed that all the bioactive compounds in the extracts have binding affinities with the enzyme and contributed to the antidiabetic efficacies of the extracts as G6PD augmenters. The effects of the extracts on insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake were investigated using non-invasive modelling by iHOMA2 software. This in vitro approach indicated that extract administration resulted in increased both insulin sensitivity of the liver and glucose uptake in the gut. The findings of the present study attest these SC-CO2 extracts of the spices as safe alternatives of metformin and BGR-34 in combating type 2 diabetes and could be safely subjected to clinical studies. These extracts could also be employed in designing proactive food supplements in mitigating the metabolic disorder.

Melatonin-rich and 1,8-cineole-rich extracts have been successfully obtained from yellow mustard (YM) and small cardamom (SC) seeds, respectively, employing green technology of supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) extraction. Chemical profiling confirmed the presence of melatonin and 1,8-cineole and co-extractants in the respective extracts. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy attested strong antioxidant activities of the extracts foregoing pan-assay interference compounds involved in spectroscopic analysis. These extracts also exhibited synergistic efficacies greater than unity confirming antioxidant synergy among the co-extracted bioactives therein. To ascertain hypocholesterolaemic efficacies, these extracts were co-administered orally with Triton X (at the pre-optimised dose of 175 mg/kg body weight (BW)) to Wistar albino rats at doses of 550, 175 and 55 mg/kg BW. Serum total cholesterol levels in the rats were monitored on days 3, 7, 15 and 21. On day 21, total cholesterol level reduced appreciably by 49·44 % in rats treated with YM seed extract and by 48·95 % in rats treated with SC seed extract, comparable with atorvastatin-administered rats (51·09 %). Either extract demonstrated inhibitory effects on hepatic 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase activity. A molecular docking exercise identified specific compounds in the extracts which possessed binding affinities comparable with therapeutically used HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. In silico and in vivo studies concertedly concluded that the consortium of bioactive components in the extracts cannot be considered as invalid metabolic panaceas and therefore these 'green' extracts could be safely subjected to clinical studies as preventive biotherapeutics for hypercholesterolaemia. These extracts could be consumed per se as hypocholesterolaemic supplements or could be ingredients of new spice-based therapeutic foods.
