Antitumor efficiency of interstitial photodynamic therapy was evaluated in experiments on outbred albino rats with implanted M-1 sarcoma. Interstitial photodynamic therapy was carried out using one diffusor at different output power and duration of exposure. The percentage of complete regression of the tumors increased with increasing exposure parameters.

An experimental treatment with rose bengal showed that optimal effectiveness of photodynamic therapy of sarcoma M-1 was achieved 3-4 hr after intraperitoneal injection of 10 mg/kg body.

The results of the study have shown that the proposed temperature-exposure regimen (42-43 degrees C for 30 min.) 30-40 min after metronidazole administration (1 mg per 1 g of the body mass of an animal) influences the vascularization of both normal tissues of the hip and tumors though to a lesser degree. It manifests itself in a elevation of the tone resulting in hypovascularization and a decrease in the total diameter of the vessels. This reaction is more pronounced in the first hours of the first day. The vascular system of ovarian adenocarcinoma turned out to be more reactive as compared to sarcoma 45.

In the experiment performed in mice with a subcutaneously implanted sarcoma-37 on the chin, rearrangement of the blood vessels has been followed by means of micro-roentgenography. In the process of the implanted tumour growth, the blood vessels undergo a profound functional-anatomical rearrangement, which develops, beginning from the first hours, in two ways: at the expense of the peripheral vessels rearrangement in the recepient and at the expense of real tumorous vessels development ensuaring vascular trophic of the tumour.

The study of the oxygen tension and blood supply to the implanted tumors of different histological structures demonstrated a correlation between pO2 and blood supply of sarcoma 37 after a single and fractionated irradiation. As to Lewis carcinoma and B-16 melanoma, the correlation was only found in tumors of a small size: as the tumor grew up to 14-15 mm such a correlation was absent. It was also established that the radiation-induced changes in the vessels and the oxygenation depended upon the histological structure of the tumor.

It is concluded that endolymphatic infusion of X-ray contrast substance in the presence of migrating tumor cells in lymphatic routes is inherent in a potential danger of tumor dissemination. Although getting of tumor cells in blood does not always result in metastases, nevertheless, a due account should be taken of the fact that lymphography is frequently performed in poor immunological resistance patients, preliminarily subjected to chemo- and radiotherapy. The decrease of immune resistance of the organism, in which the lymphatic system is of primary importance, is known to contribute per se to generalization of the tumor process. Another important conclusion is that the principal mass of tumor cells is ejected in the immediate period after endolymphatic injection of X-ray contrast substance. Thus, the cannulation of the thoracic duct during this period may prevent or reduce getting of massive amounts of tumor cells into the total blood flow.
