RESUMO

Objective: Genomic surveillance and seroprevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS CoV-2) in Bangladesh is paramount for COVID-19 pandemic preparedness yet lagging the high-income countries due to limited resources. Methods: SARS-CoV-2 variants, COVID-19 symptoms, and serology were prospectively evaluated in a cross-sectional study of Bangladeshi adults testing RT-PCR positive in 2021 and 2022. Results: SARS CoV-2 Omicron variants of asymptomatic or mild COVID-19 in 2022 replaced Delta variant infections requiring hospitalization and oxygen support. The omicron XBB became predominant in July 2022 and associated with cough, headache or body ache and loss of smell; 47 of 68 (69 %), 30 of 68 (44 %) and 27 of 68 (40 %) respectively at higher frequency than BA.1/BA.2; 16 of 88 (18 %), 13 of 88 (15 %) and 0 of 88 (0 %) p < 0.01, p < 0.01 and p < 0.0001. Linear regression analysis reveals no associations between the number of previous infections and the number of symptoms, r = -0.084, p = 0.68. The anti-nucleoprotein (N)-protein IgG post COVID-19 and anti-Spike (S) protein IgG post-COVID-19 vaccination were similar between BA.2, BA.4/BA.5 and XBB and significantly lower than the levels in delta variant infections (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Omicron XBB subvariants emerged in Bangladesh two months prior to previous reports and include unique patterns of S-protein mutations not assigned in PANGO lineage. The SARS CoV-2 omicron break-through infections persist in the presence of sustained antibody responses and vaccinations, underscoring the importance of molecular surveillance in low-income countries.

RESUMO

Chemical recycling of plastics is a promising approach for effectively depolymerizing plastic waste into its constituent monomers, thereby contributing to the realization of a sustainable circular economy. Glycolysis, which converts polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into the monomer bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET), has emerged as a cost-effective and commercially viable chemical recycling process. However, glycolysis requires long reaction times and high energy consumption, limiting its industrialization. In this study, we develop an energy-efficient microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent-catalyzed glycolysis method to degrade PET effectively and rapidly, resulting in a high BHET yield. This combined approach enables the quantitative degradation of PET within 9 min, achieving a high BHET yield of approximately 99% under optimal reaction conditions. Furthermore, the proposed approach has a low specific energy consumption (45 kJ/g) and minimizes waste generation. The thermal behavior of PET and its degradation mechanism are systematically investigated using scanning electron microscopy and density functional theory-based calculations. The results obtained suggest that the proposed straightforward, swift, and energy-efficient strategy has the potential to offer a sustainable solution to plastic waste management challenges and expedite the industrialization of chemical recycling.

RESUMO

Technology-facilitated sexual violence and abuse (TFSVA) is a pervasive phenomenon and a global problem. TFSVA refers to any form of sexual violence, exploitation, or harassment enacted through the misuse of digital technologies. This includes, but is not limited to, image-based sexual abuse, online sexual exploitation and harassment, sextortion, and the non-consensual sharing of sexual images. It has significant and long-lasting psychological, social, financial, and health impacts. TFSVA is on the rise, particularly in low and middle-income countries (LMICs), where there has been an explosion in digital technology overall. This scoping review aimed to identify studies on TFSVA in LMICs to examine its types, impacts, victim-survivor coping strategies, and help-seeking. To identify peer-reviewed literature, six databases were searched: Applied Social Sciences Index & Abstracts, ProQuest, PubMed, Scopus, Star Plus-University of Sheffield library search, and Web of Science. The review included empirical studies published in English between 1996 and 2022, focusing on TFSVA among adults (aged 18+) in LMICs. A total of 14 peer-reviewed studies were included, highlighting that scant empirical research is available on TFSVA in LMICs. This review found several types of TFSVA and their wide-ranging impacts; traditional patriarchal societal norms and values largely shape TFSVA for women in LMICs. It also found more social impacts linked to sociocultural factors. Survivors adopted various coping mechanisms and help-seeking behaviors primarily through informal family support. Studies highlighted the need for effective legislation; pro-victim-survivor policing; strong family support; increasing victim-survivors' knowledge about reporting; and more research.

RESUMO

Axial DC magnetic field-assisted multi-capillary underwater air bubble discharge plasma jet has been used to study the productions of reactive oxygen species. Analyses of optical emission data revealed that the rotational (Tr) and vibrational temperatures (Tv) of plasma species slightly increased with magnetic field strength. The electron temperature (Te) and density (ne) increased almost linearly with magnetic field strength. Te increased from 0.53 to 0.59 eV, whereas ne increased from 1.03 × 1015 cm-3 to 1.33 × 1015 cm-3 for B = 0 to B = 374 mT, respectively. Analytical results from the plasma treated water provided that the electrical conductivity (EC), oxidative reduction potential (ORP), and the concentrations of O3 and H2 O2 enhanced from 155 to 229 µS cm-1, 141 to 17 mV, 1.34 to 1.92 mg L-1, and 5.61 to 10.92 mg L-1 due to the influence of axial DC magnetic field, while [Formula: see text] reduced from 5.10 to 3.93 for 30 min treatment of water with B = 0 and B = 374 mT, respectively. The model wastewater prepared with Remazol brilliant blue textile dye and the plasma treated wastewater studied by optical absorption spectrometer, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, and gas chromatography mass spectrometer. The results show that the decolorization efficiency increased ~ 20% after 5 min treatment for the maximum B = 374 mT with respect to zero-magnetic field and, power consumption, and electrical energy cost reduced ~ 6.3% and ~ 4.5%, respectively, due to the maximum assisted axial DC magnetic field strength of 374 mT.

RESUMO

The clinical presentation of COVID-19 and the specific antibody responses associated with SARS-CoV-2 variants have not been investigated during the emergence of Omicron variants in Bangladesh. The Delta and Omicron variants were identified by post-PCR melting curve analysis of the spike (S) protein receptor binding domain amplicons. Anti-S-protein immunoglobulin-G anti-nucleocapsid (N)-protein immunoglobulin-G and immunoglobulin-A levels were measured by ELISA. The Delta variant was found in 40 out of 40 (100%) SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR positive COVID-19 patients between 13 September and 23 October 2021 and Omicron variants in 90 out of 90 (100%) RT-PCR positive COVID-19 patients between 9 January and 10 February 2022. The Delta variant associated with hospitalization (74%, 80%, and 40%) and oxygen support (60%, 57%, and 40%) in the no vaccine, dose-1, and dose-2 vaccinated cases, respectively, whereas the Omicron COVID-19 required neither hospitalization nor oxygen support (0%, p < 0.0001). Fever, cough, and breathlessness were found at a significantly higher frequency among the Delta than Omicron variants (p < 0.001). The viral RNA levels of the Delta variant were higher than that of the Omicron variants (Ct median 19.9 versus 23.85; p < 0.02). Anti-spike protein immunoglobulin-G and anti-N-protein immunoglobulin-G within 1 week post onset of Delta variant COVID-19 symptoms indicate prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. The Delta variant and Omicron BA.1 and BA.2 breakthrough infections in the Dhaka region, at 240 days post onset of COVID-19 symptoms, negatively correlated with the time interval between the second vaccine dose and serum sampling. The findings of lower anti-spike protein immunoglobulin-G reactivity after booster vaccination than after the second vaccine dose suggest that the booster vaccine is not necessarily beneficial in young Bangladeshi adults having a history of repeated SARS-CoV-2 infections.

RESUMO

Novel SARS-CoV-2 variants are emerging at an alarming rate. The delta variant and other variants of concern (VoC) carry spike (S)-protein mutations, which have the potential to evade protective immunity, to trigger break-through infections after COVID-19 vaccination, and to propagate future waves of COVID-19 pandemic. To identify SARS CoV-2 variants in Bangladesh, patients who are RT-PCR-positive for COVID-19 infections in Dhaka were screened by a RT-PCR melting curve analysis for spike protein mutations. To assess the anti-SARS CoV-2 antibody responses, the levels of the anti-S -proteins IgA and IgG and the anti-N-protein IgG were measured by ELISA. Of a total of 36 RT-PCR positive samples (75%), 27 were identified as delta variants, with one carrying an additional Q677H mutation and two with single nucleotide substitutions at position 23029 (compared to Wuhan-Hu-1 reference NC 045512) in the genome sequence. Three (8.3%) were identified as beta variants, two (5.5%) were identified as alpha variants, three (8.3%) were identified as having a B.1.1.318 lineage, and one sample was identified as an eta variant (B.1.525) carrying an additional V687L mutation. The trend of higher viral load (lower Cp values) among delta variants than in the alpha and beta variants was of borderline statistical significance (p = 0.045). Prospective studies with larger Bangladeshi cohorts are warranted to confirm the emergence of S-protein mutations and their association with antibody response in natural infection and potential breakthrough in vaccinated subjects.

RESUMO

In this present study conducted with the LFGD (Low-Frequency Glow Discharge) (Ar + O2) plasma treated maize seeds, to inspect the effect on seed surface modifications, seed germination, growth, development, productivity and nutritional compositions of maize plants. This study reported that LFGD (Ar + O2) plasma treated maize seeds have a potential effect to change its smooth seed surfaces and, it becomes rougher. It also enhances the seed germination rate up to (15.88%), which might help to increase the shoot length (33.42%), root length (10.67%), stem diameter (13.37%), total chlorophyll content (46.93%), total soluble protein (52.48%), total soluble phenol (21.68%) and sugar (1.62%) concentrations in respect controls of our experimental plants. For this reason, the acceptable treatment duration for maize seeds were 30sec, 60sec, 90sec and 120sec. After treatment, the plants exhibited a significant increase in CAT, SOD, APX and GR activities in the leaves and roots, and also significantly changes in H2O2 (208.33 ± 5.87µ molg-1 FW) in the leaves and (61.13 ± 1.72µ molg-1 FW) in the roots, NO was (369.24 ± 213.19µ molg-1FW) and (1094.23 ± 135.44µ molg-1FW) in the leaves and roots. LFGD plasma treatment also contributed to enhancement of productivity (1.27%), nutritional (moisture, ash, fat, and crude fiber) compositions, and iron and zinc micro-nutrition concentrations of maize. From this research, LFGD (Ar + O2) plasma treatment showed a potential impact on the maize cultivation system, which is very effective tools and both in nationally and internationally alter the conventional cultivation system of maize. Because it promotes seed surface modification, improved germination rate, shoot length, root length, chlorophyll content, some of the growths related enzymatic activity, nutrient composition, iron, and zinc micro-nutrients and the productivity of maize.

RESUMO

IL-1α serves as a pro-inflammatory cytokine. Although pro-IL-1α has cytokine activity, proteolytic maturation increases its potency and release from cells. IL-1α maturation occurs in a caspase-1-dependent manner following inflammasome activation. However, pro-IL-1α is not a substrate of caspase-1, and it remains unclear what mediates the maturation of this cytokine downstream of inflammasomes. Here, we show that gasdermin D (GSDMD), an executor of pyroptosis, is required for the rapid induction of IL-1α maturation by non-particulate inflammasome activators. Ablation of GSDMD abrogates the maturation of IL-1α, but not of IL-1ß. Inflammasome-induced maturation of IL-1α relies on extracellular Ca2+ and calpains. Ca2+ influx and calpain activation are induced in a GSDMD-dependent manner. Glycine, which inhibits cell lysis, but not GSDMD pore formation, does not affect IL-1α maturation. These results suggest that during inflammasome activation, GSDMD processed by caspase-1 forms plasma membrane pores that mediate Ca2+ influx, resulting in the calpain-dependent maturation of IL-1α.

RESUMO

The study investigates the effect of LPDBD (Low Pressure Dielectric Barrier Discharge) (Ar + Air) plasma on seed germination, seedling growth and antioxidant enzyme activity of rice. Rice seeds were treated with LPDBD (Ar + Air) plasma for 2min, 4min, 6min, 8min and 10min. Seed germination rate, seedling growth, total chlorophyll content, enzymatic activity, total soluble sugar and protein concentration were increased in plants grown from the LPDBD (Ar + Air) plasma treated seeds. It was observed that the sprouting of seeds and the growth of seedlings of rice depends on the feed gases used to generate plasma and plasma processing time. In the case of plantlets germinated from the plasma-treated seeds of rice, the H2O2 level was increased significantly both in leaves and roots for 6min, 8min and 10min treatment respectively. No significant change was observed in Nitric Oxide (NO) concentration in seed, leaf, or root of plants grown from LPDBD (Ar + Air) plasma-treated seeds. The amount of total soluble sugar and protein increased significantly in the case of 2min, 4min, 6min, 8min and 10min seed treatment. Although plants exhibited no significant increase in APX activities, but a significant increase of CAT and SOD activity in the leaf and root was found. This study reveals that LPDBD (Ar + Air) plasma is involved in the elevation of ROS species in leaf and root of rice plants which is tightly regulated by the upregulation of CAT activity that ultimately enhances the seed germination and growth of rice plantlets.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The increased global incidence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections, warrants accurate and affordable diagnostics across different geographical regions. The soluble and highly conserved HEV open reading frame 2 (ORF2) capsid antigen (HEV-Ag) is detectable in self-limited acute enteric hepatitis by HEV-Ag ELISA which is a promising serological assay in settings where HEV-RNA testing is not feasible. Our aim was to assess the HEV-Ag biomarker in an HEV outbreak in a low income country. METHODS: A prospective single center longitudinal study during HEV outbreaks in the Chittagong, Bangladesh region between October 2018 and October 2019 was conducted based on recruitment of acute jaundice cases with clinical signs and symptoms of suspect HEV infections. Acute HEV infection was defined as a positive test result for anti-HEV IgM antibodies. RESULTS: Forty four of the 51 enrolled enteric hepatitis cases (86 %) were confirmed HEV by anti-HEV IgM ELISA at day 0 hospital entry. The anti-HEV-IgM and IgG were positive in all patients and did not reveal significant differences; neither between the time points day 0 and follow-up hospitalization on day 2-6 or day 7-10 nor between RNA-positive (n = 36) versus RNAnegative (n = 8) HEV groups. The HEV-Ag positivity was higher in viral RNA-positive (29/36, 81 %) than the viral RNA-negative (1/8, 12 %) group, p < 0.001 and the HEV-Ag levels positively correlated with viremia, r = 0.77, p < 0.0001. All non-HEV cases; n = 7 tested negative anti-HEV IgM and HEV-Ag and 5 of 7 (71 %) tested anti-HAV IgM positive. CONCLUSIONS: The HEV-Ag ELISA is a reliable and practical diagnostic tool in this acute HEV outbreak.

RESUMO

This study aims to determine the role of personal protective measures in the prevention of COVID-19 spread among the physicians working at different health facilities in Bangladesh. This hospital-based cross-sectional comparative study was conducted from May to June 2020. A total of 98 COVID-19 positive physicians and 92 COVID-19 negative physicians (physicians with no symptoms of COVID-19 or who tested negative) were enrolled. The questionnaire was adapted from a tool developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) for risk assessment and management of exposure of healthcare workers in the context of COVID-19. Data were collected from the respondents online using Google forms. There was no significant difference in baseline information between COVID-19 positive and COVID-19 negative physicians. The physicians, who were unaware of direct participation in COVID-19 patient care, had higher odds of being COVID-19 positive (OR = 4.018; CI: 1.532-10.535). Additionally, the physicians, who were unaware of the COVID-19 status while performing the aerosol-generated procedure (AGP), had a higher chance of being COVID-19 positive (OR = 2.522; CI: 1.020-6.233). Using face shields/goggles (OR = 0.437; CI:0.228-0.837) and regular decontamination of the patient's surroundings (OR = 0.392; CI:0.176-0.873) while usual take care of patients and use of N95 masks while performing AGP (OR = 0.372; CI:0.159-0.873) had protective roles against COVID-19 among the physicians. The physicians who had reused the medical gown had two times more chances of being tested positive for COVID-19 than those who had not reused it (OR = 2.3; CI:1.251-4.259). The use of face shields/goggles and N95 masks and decontamination of the patient's surroundings may give protection against COVID-19. Additionally, reusing medical gowns should be avoided as much as possible.

RESUMO

Ionising radiation (IR) is a recognised carcinogen responsible for cancer development in patients previously treated using radiotherapy, and in individuals exposed as a result of accidents at nuclear energy plants. However, the mutational signatures induced by distinct types and doses of radiation are unknown. Here, we analyse the genetic architecture of mammary tumours, lymphomas and sarcomas induced by high (56Fe-ions) or low (gamma) energy radiation in mice carrying Trp53 loss of function alleles. In mammary tumours, high-energy radiation is associated with induction of focal structural variants, leading to genomic instability and Met amplification. Gamma-radiation is linked to large-scale structural variants and a point mutation signature associated with oxidative stress. The genomic architecture of carcinomas, sarcomas and lymphomas arising in the same animals are significantly different. Our study illustrates the complex interactions between radiation quality, germline Trp53 deficiency and tissue/cell of origin in shaping the genomic landscape of IR-induced tumours.

RESUMO

Inflammasomes are innate immune mechanisms that activate caspase-1 in response to a variety of stimuli, including Salmonella infection. Active caspase-1 has a potential to induce two different types of cell death, depending on the expression of the pyroptosis mediator gasdermin D (GSDMD); following caspase-1 activation, GSDMD-sufficient and GSDMD-null/low cells undergo pyroptosis and apoptosis, respectively. Although Bid, a caspase-1 substrate, plays a critical role in caspase-1 induction of apoptosis in GSDMD-null/low cells, an additional mechanism that mediates this cell death independently of Bid has also been suggested. This study investigated the Bid-independent pathway of caspase-1-induced apoptosis. Caspase-1 has been reported to process caspase-6 and caspase-7. Silencing of caspase-7, but not caspase-6, significantly reduced the activation of caspase-3 induced by caspase-1, which was activated by chemical dimerization, in GSDMD/Bid-deficient cells. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated depletion of caspase-7 had the same effect on the caspase-3 activation. Moreover, in the absence of GSDMD and Bid, caspase-7 depletion reduced apoptosis induced by caspase-1 activation. Caspase-7 was activated following caspase-1 activation independently of caspase-3, suggesting that caspase-7 acts downstream of caspase-1 and upstream of caspase-3. Salmonella induced the activation of caspase-3 in GSDMD-deficient macrophages, which relied partly on Bid and largely on caspase-1. The caspase-3 activation and apoptotic morphological changes seen in Salmonella-infected GSDMD/Bid-deficient macrophages were attenuated by caspase-7 knockdown. These results suggest that in addition to Bid, caspase-7 can also mediate caspase-1-induced apoptosis and provide mechanistic insights into inflammasome-associated cell death that is one major effector mechanism of inflammasomes.

RESUMO

@#Didactic lecture promotes passive learning and fails to motivate students. Small group learning has been widely recommended as it helps to refine understanding of complex issues, to solve the problems, develop critical thinking and apply knowledge to new situations. PALS – a “peer assisted learning” mode where in students discuss in groups and learn from each other. They get motivated and set a platform, which encourages them to communicate and do problem solving. The present study was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of small group teaching (SGT) and peer assisted learning (PAL) approach among pre clinical medical students. Small groups of students were selected for this study out of the big batch of students pursuing 2nd year MBBS program at AIMST University who were undergoing “respiratory system” block. At the end of lecture-based sessions, a few topics were selected for SGT- PAL session. Students were asked to complete the pretest questions on the selected topics and they were then explained the topics selected for this session. Students had SGT PAL on those selected topics. Then they completed the post test questions on the same topic. Responses obtained for the pre- test and post-test questions were analyzed using SPSS using paired t test and the perceptions on their own understanding using marginal homogeneity test, both showed a significant improvement. SGT and PAL approach helped students to improve understanding of important concepts and can be adopted more widely as an alternative to lectures.

RESUMO

Caspase-1 activated in inflammasomes triggers a programmed necrosis called pyroptosis, which is mediated by gasdermin D (GSDMD). However, GSDMD-deficient cells are still susceptible to caspase-1-mediated cell death. Therefore, here, we investigate the mechanism of caspase-1-initiated cell death in GSDMD-deficient cells. Inflammasome stimuli induce apoptosis accompanied by caspase-3 activation in GSDMD-deficient macrophages, which largely relies on caspase-1. Chemical dimerization of caspase-1 induces pyroptosis in GSDMD-sufficient cells, but apoptosis in GSDMD-deficient cells. Caspase-1-induced apoptosis involves the Bid-caspase-9-caspase-3 axis, which can be followed by GSDME-dependent secondary necrosis/pyroptosis. However, Bid ablation does not completely abolish the cell death, suggesting the existence of an additional mechanism. Furthermore, cortical neurons and mast cells exhibit little or low GSDMD expression and undergo apoptosis after oxygen glucose deprivation and nigericin stimulation, respectively, in a caspase-1- and Bid-dependent manner. This study clarifies the molecular mechanism and biological roles of caspase-1-induced apoptosis in GSDMD-low/null cell types.

RESUMO

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in plant-derived food is a big concern. This study examines whether and how Ar/O2 and Ar/Air plasma techniques lead to Cd detoxification in wheat. Treatment with Ar/O2 and Ar/Air changed the seed surface and decreased the pH of seeds as well as the cultivation media. Generally, plants subjected to Cd treatment from seeds treated with Ar/O2and Ar/Air plasma showed considerable progress in morphology and total chlorophyll synthesis compared to Cd-treated wheat, suggesting that plasma technology is effective for Cd detoxification. Furthermore, Ar/O2 and Ar/Air plasma treated plants showed a significant decrease in root and shoot Cd concentration, which is consistent with the reduced expression of Cd transporters in the root (TaLCT1 and TaHMA2) compared with the plants not treated with plasma in response to Cd stress. This Cd inhibition is possibly accomplished by the decrease of pH reducing the bioavailability of Cd in the rhizosphere. These observations are in line with maintenance of total soluble protein along with reduced electrolyte leakage and cell death (%) in root and shoot due to Ar/O2 and Ar/Air treatments. Further, Cd-induced elevated H2O2 or oxidative damage in tissues was mainly diminished through the upregulation of antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT) and their corresponding genes (TaSOD and TaCAT) induced by Ar/O2 and Ar/Air plasma. Grafting results suggest that root originating nitric oxide signal possibly drives the mechanisms of Cd detoxification due to plasma treatment in wheat. These findings provide a novel and eco-friendly use of plasma technology for the mitigation of Cd toxicity in wheat plants.

RESUMO

This study investigates the effect and mechanisms of low pressure dielectric barrier discharge (LPDBD) produced with Ar/O2 and Ar/Air technique causing biological stimulation leading to improved germination and growth in wheat. Both plasma treatments caused rougher and chapped seed surface along with noticeable improvement in seed germination in wheat. Beside this, seed H2O2 concentration significantly increased compared to controls subjected to Ar/O2 and Ar/Air while this phenomenon was more pronounced due to Ar/Air plasma. Analysis of plants grown from the plasma treated seeds showed significant improvement in shoot characteristics, iron concentration, total soluble protein and sugar concentration in comparison with the controls more efficiently due to Ar/O2 plasma than that of Ar/Air. Further, none of the plasma treatments caused membrane damage or cell death in root and shoot of wheat. Interestingly, Ar/O2 treated plants showed a significant increase (2-fold) of H2O2 compared to controls in both root and shoot, while Ar/Air plasma caused no changes in H2O2. This phenomenon was supported by the biochemical and molecular evidence of SOD, APX and CAT in wheat plants. Plants derived from Ar/O2 treated seeds demonstrated a significant increase in SOD activity and TaSOD expression in roots of wheat, while APX and CAT activities along with TaCAT and TaAPX expression showed no significant changes. In contrast, Ar/Air plasma caused a significant increase only in APX activity in the shoot. This suggests that Ar/O2 plasma caused a slight induction in H2O2 accumulation without triggering the H2O2 scavengers (APX and CAT) and thus, efficiency affect growth and development in wheat plants. Further, grafting of control and Ar/O2 treated plants showed a significant increase in shoot biomass and H2O2 concentration in grafts having Ar/O2 rootstock regardless of the type scion attached to it. It indicates that signal driving Ar/O2 plasma mediated growth improvement in wheat is possibly originated in roots. Taken together, this paper delivers new insight into the mechanistic basis for growth improvement by LPDBD technique.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate some new biochemical parameters that help ensuring the early and precise diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in blood plasma. DESIGN AND SETTINGS: A prospective study conducted with patients scheduled for some new biochemical parameters that help ensuring the early and precise diagnosis of ADHD in blood plasma in a Child Development Center of the Chittagong, Bangladesh. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was carried out at two levels. The first level was questionnaire on personal data and disease history while the second was on biochemical examination of the plasma ammonia and lactate status. A total of 100 children (age range 2 years 4 months to 12 years 6 months, mean age 7 years 5 months) were investigated in this study among 75 were male and 25 were female. This study was conducted in Chittagong Maa-O-Shishu General Hospital, Bangladesh. RESULTS: We observed that the level of plasma ammonia and lactate were higher in ADHD children (36-60 µmol/L; P < 0.05 and 22-30 µmol/L; P < 0.05, respectively) compare to a reference value. The prevalence of ADHD is higher in male (75%) than in female (25%) with a ratio of 3:1. Consanguinity increases the risk of having ADHD in the next generation. CONCLUSION: This study concludes that there might be a correlation between ADHD and increased level of plasma ammonia and lactate level, and those might be an important parameter in the diagnosis of ADHD patients.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the comparative effects of Diospyros blancoi (Ebenaceae) leaves (DBL), root bark (DBRB) and stem bark (DBSB) on free radicals and cancer. Methods: The polyphenol contents, antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties were determined using standard spectrophotometric methods. Cytotoxicity and anticancer activities were performed on brine shrimp nauplii and Ehrlich ascite carcinoma cells, respectively. Results: Among the extracts, DBSB showed the highest total antioxidant capacity and reducing capacity on ferrous ion. Based on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities, DBSB showed (95.760 ± 0.343)% and (67.460 ± 2.641)% scavenging with IC
