RESUMO

We experimentally demonstrate a source of nearly pure single photons in arbitrary temporal shapes heralded from a parametric down-conversion (PDC) source at telecom wavelengths. The technology is enabled by the tailored dispersion of in-house fabricated waveguides with shaped pump pulses to directly generate the PDC photons in on-demand temporal shapes. We generate PDC photons in Hermite-Gauss and frequency-binned modes and confirm a minimum purity of 0.81, even for complex temporal shapes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To achieve multicentre external validation of the Herder and Bayesian Inference Malignancy Calculator (BIMC) models. METHODS: Two hundred and fifty-nine solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs) collected from four major hospitals which underwent 18-FDG-PET characterization were included in this multicentre retrospective study. The Herder model was tested on all available lesions (group A). A subgroup of 180 SPNs (group B) was used to provide unbiased comparison between the Herder and BIMC models. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) area under the curve (AUC) analysis was performed to assess diagnostic accuracy. Decision analysis was performed by adopting the risk threshold stated in British Thoracic Society (BTS) guidelines. RESULTS: Unbiased comparison performed In Group B showed a ROC AUC for the Herder model of 0.807 (95 % CI 0.742-0.862) and for the BIMC model of 0.822 (95 % CI 0.758-0.875). CONCLUSIONS: Both the Herder and the BIMC models were proven to accurately predict the risk of malignancy when tested on a large multicentre external case series. The BIMC model seems advantageous on the basis of a more favourable decision analysis. KEY POINTS: • The Herder model showed a ROC AUC of 0.807 on 180 SPNs. • The BIMC model showed a ROC AUC of 0.822 on 180 SPNs. • Decision analysis is more favourable to the BIMC model.

RESUMO

The effects of aging on the activation of the cytoplasmic tyrosine protein kinase p56(lck) have been investigated in PBL from adult and elderly subjects upon activation with mitogens or different co-stimuli. Results show that the amount and phosphorylation of p56(lck) are reduced in PBL from elderly as compared to adult subjects. This finding suggests that alterations in p56(lck) may contribute to the age-associated loss of some T cell functions, such as proliferation and IL-2 production, which are found decreased in PBL from old individuals. However, p56(lck) seems irrelevant to the production of IFN-gamma and IL-4 which were both found increased in the PBL from old subjects, as expected from the relative expansion of memory versus naive T cell subpopulations in aging.

RESUMO

Bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv Lit) were treated with N-[2-(2-oxo-1-imidazolinidyl)ethyl]-N'-phenylurea (EDU) (150 microg ml(-1)) in hydroponic conditions. The EDU concentration in different plant tissues was measured by HPLC. EDU accumulated in leaves and persisted for more than 10 days showing a slow degradation. Using five different EDU concentrations, a significant relationship between EDU concentration in nutrient solution, ozone tolerance and EDU concentration in leaves was shown. Leaves which contained more EDU were less sensitive to ozone damage. Investigations on protoplasts and cell cultures showed that EDU did not enter the cells. Possible implications of EDU accumulation in the leaf apoplast are discussed.

RESUMO

Multilocus enzyme electrophoresis was used to characterize 378 isolates of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C recovered during a period of an increase in group C meningococcal disease in Canada. Thirty-four enzyme electrophoretic types were found among the isolates, which were predominantly (96.0%) serotype 2a. One clone (ET 15), characterized by a rarely occurring allele for the enzyme fumarase, was responsible for a focal outbreak in Ontario followed by the spread of group C disease across the province. This clone, which occurred infrequently among strains isolated in 1986, accounted for over 65% of group C strains associated with meningococcal disease in Canada in 1990.

RESUMO

Typing of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B disease isolates was carried out using a panel of serotype-and subtype-specific monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Three hundred and sixty-two strains isolated from 1977 to 1986 were typed using five serotyping and seven subtyping reagents and outer membrane vesicles as antigens. Serotype 2b accounted for 30% of the disease isolates. The most common subtype was P1.2, which occurred on 18.5% of all strains or 48.6% of the serotype 2b strains. Of the 362 strains typed, 135 (37.3%) were serotyped and 122 (33.7%) were subtyped. Overall, 185 (51.1%) of the strains could be assigned a serotype and (or) subtype. Strains (221) isolated during the years 1987-1989 were typed using a panel of 6 serotyping and 12 subtyping reagents by whole-cell ELISA. Strains of serotypes 4 (21.7%) and 15 (20.8%) were the most common and carried a wide variety of subtypes. The most common subtypes were P1.2 (11.8%) and P1.16 (9.5%). Of the 221 strains analyzed, 132 (59.7%) were assigned a serotype and 123 (55.7%) a subtype and with all 18 MAbs, 192 (86.9%) of the strains were serotyped and (or) subtyped. Two different MAbs to the four epitopes 2a, 15, P1.2, and P1.16 gave discordant reactions of 0.3, 6.6, 2.6, and 2.2%, respectively, when used to analyze over 300 strains of N. meningitidis.

RESUMO

Reaction centers isolated from the photosynthetic bacterium Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides R-26 mutant were irradiated with laser pulses of variable energy and the amount of photooxidation of the primary electron donor bacteriochlorophyll was measured. The resultant light saturation curve fits an exponential function and not a hyperbolic or hyperbolic tangent function. Analysis using either a Poisson statistical model or a simple kinetic model predicts an exponential light saturation curve in the limit where the light pulse is long relative to any transient intermediate states. The absolute quantum yield of photochemistry was found to be 0.98, utilizing the entire light saturation curve. Distortions from the simple exponential light saturation behavior are predicted when very short laser pulses are used.

RESUMO

Sera from BB Wistar rats and Wistar control rats were evaluated for the presence of islet cell antibodies in a prospective study using an indirect immunofluorescence assay on pancreatic islet cell suspensions from cultured rat islets. Islet cell surface antibodies were detected in sera from all animals of the spontaneously diabetic BB Wistar rat colony. The antibody could be detected well before the clinical onset of the disease and was present throughout the course of study of all diabetic animals. Sera from control Wistar rats were negative when tested for this antibody.
