RESUMO

Choking is one of the important modes of death in young children who are dying of unintentional injuries. Anatomical and physiological characteristics while eating could increase the incidence of choking in children under four years. Here, we have described two classical cases of choking in young children and discussed the important areas to be addressed. Parental awareness and education will be the important strategy that can prevent the incidence of choking.

PURPOSE: To compare diagnostic performance of two MRI protocols, motion resistant and conventional breath-hold, in patients with acute abdominal pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five patients unable to breath-hold underwent a motion-resistant protocol (Radial group). Twenty-seven patients able to breath-hold underwent conventional protocol. The diagnostic performance of MRI was calculated. Cartesian and radial 3D-GRE sequences were compared. RESULTS: In Radial group, diagnosis was correct in 31/35 patients (88.5%), with sensitivity and specificity of 85.7% and 87.5%. In Cartesian group, diagnosis was correct in 24/27 patients (88.9%), with sensitivity and specificity of 93.7% and 81.8%. CONCLUSION: MRI appeared moderately successful for non-cooperative patients presenting with acute abdominal pain, with comparable accuracy to the standard breath-hold protocol.

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging plays an important role in the diagnosis and staging of acute and chronic pancreatitis and may represent the best imaging technique in the setting of pancreatitis due to its unmatched soft tissue contrast resolution as well as non-ionizing nature and higher safety profile of intravascular contrast media, making it particularly valuable in radiosensitive populations such as pregnant patients, and patients with recurrent pancreatitis requiring multiple follow-up examinations. Additional advantages include the ability to detect early forms of chronic pancreatitis and to better differentiate adenocarcinoma from focal chronic pancreatitis. This review addresses new trends in clinical pancreatic MR imaging emphasizing its role in imaging all types of acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatitis complications and other important differential diagnoses that mimic pancreatitis.
