RESUMO

Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is a tick that causes huge economic losses in cattle. The indiscriminate use of acaricides has generated resistance to most compounds present on the market. This makes further investigation on other potential acaricides necessary, the in silico assay being an alternative to the design of new compounds. In the present study a biosilico assay was performed using TOMOCOMD-CARDD (TOpological MOlecular COMputer Design-Computer-Aided Rational Drug Design) and WEKA (Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis) software. Two carvacrol and four salicylic acid derivatives, synthesized by conventional methods and evaluated with the larval packet test on larvae of R. (B.) microplus were selected. All evaluated compounds presented acaricidal activity; however, ethyl 2-methoxybenzoate (91.8 ± 1.7 % mortality) and ethyl 2,5-dihydroxybenzoate (89.1 ± 1.6 % mortality) showed greater activity than salicylic acid. With regard to the carvacrol analogues, carvacrol acetate (67.8 ± 2.1 % mortality) and carvacrol methyl ether (71.7 ± 1.6 % mortality) also showed greater activity than carvacrol (35.9 ± 3.2 % mortality). TOMOCOMD-CARDD and WEKA software were helpful tools in the search for alternative structures with potential acaricidal activity on R. (B.) microplus.

RESUMO

Incisional hernias develop in 2%-20% of laparotomy incisions, necessitating approximately 90000 ventral hernia repairs per year. Although a common general surgical problem, a "best" method for repair has yet to be identified, as evidenced by documented recurrence rates of 25%-52% with primary open repair. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of laparoscopic ventral and incisional herniorrhaphy. From February 1991 through November 2002, a total of 384 patients were treated by laparoscopic technique for primary and recurrent umbilical hernias, ventral incisional hernias, and spigelian hernias. The technique was essentially the same for each procedure and involved lysis of adhesions, reduction of hernia contents, closure of the defect, and 3-5 cm circumferential mesh coverage of all hernias. Of the 384 patients in our study group, there were 212 females and 172 males with a mean age of 58.3 years (range 27-100 years). Ninety-six percent of the hernia repairs were completed laparoscopically. Mean operating time was 68 min (range 14-405 min), and estimated average blood loss was 25 mL (range 10-200 mL). The mean postoperative hospital stay was 2.9 days and ranged from same-day discharge to 36 days. The overall postoperative complication rate was 10.1%. There have been 11 recurrences (2.9%) during a mean follow-up time of 47.1 months (range 1-141 months). Laparoscopic ventral and incisional hernia repair, based on the Rives-Stoppa technique, is a safe, feasible, and effective alternative to open techniques. More long-term follow-up is still required to further evaluate the true effectiveness of this operation.

RESUMO

In this work, we report the isolation of a factor from the culture supernatant of confluent fibroblasts from human cervix with the diagnosis of uterine myomatosis. This factor possesses the capacity to inhibit the proliferation of normal fibroblasts. The proliferation inhibitor factor (PIF) was purified from the culture supernatant by precipitation with 80% ammonium sulfate, and by molecular sieve chromatography. Our results indicate that PIF is a protein of 23 kDa, which is highly sensitive to trypsin treatment, and is thermolabile, since temperatures equal to, or above, 60 degrees C eliminate the protein activity in 15 to 20 min. Western blot analyses identified no cross reactions of the purified PIF with TGF-alpha, TNFalpha, IFNgamma, or IL-1beta, suggesting that PIF is a new protein belonging to the group of factors secreted by fibroblasts able to inhibit cellular proliferation.

RESUMO

We report a Mexican family with two members (mother and daughter) affected with blepharophimosis hereditary syndrome: ptosis of the eyelids, blepharospasm and epicanthus inversus. The daughter presented: hyperopia, astigmatism, hemispheric asymmetry, superficial mental deficiency and ovarian cyst. The mother with ophthalmological affectation, present too border line intellectual quotient. Clinical findings in this family illustrate autosomal dominant trait; differential diagnosis should be taken into account for genetic counselling.
