RESUMO

The use of cephalopod beaks in ecological and population dynamics studies has allowed major advances of our knowledge on the role of cephalopods in marine ecosystems in the last 60 years. Since the 1960's, with the pioneering research by Malcolm Clarke and colleagues, cephalopod beaks (also named jaws or mandibles) have been described to species level and their measurements have been shown to be related to cephalopod body size and mass, which permitted important information to be obtained on numerous biological and ecological aspects of cephalopods in marine ecosystems. In the last decade, a range of new techniques has been applied to cephalopod beaks, permitting new kinds of insight into cephalopod biology and ecology. The workshop on cephalopod beaks of the Cephalopod International Advisory Council Conference (Sesimbra, Portugal) in 2022 aimed to review the most recent scientific developments in this field and to identify future challenges, particularly in relation to taxonomy, age, growth, chemical composition (i.e., DNA, proteomics, stable isotopes, trace elements) and physical (i.e., structural) analyses. In terms of taxonomy, new techniques (e.g., 3D geometric morphometrics) for identifying cephalopods from their beaks are being developed with promising results, although the need for experts and reference collections of cephalopod beaks will continue. The use of beak microstructure for age and growth studies has been validated. Stable isotope analyses on beaks have proven to be an excellent technique to get valuable information on the ecology of cephalopods (namely habitat and trophic position). Trace element analyses is also possible using beaks, where concentrations are significantly lower than in other tissues (e.g., muscle, digestive gland, gills). Extracting DNA from beaks was only possible in one study so far. Protein analyses can also be made using cephalopod beaks. Future challenges in research using cephalopod beaks are also discussed.

Background: Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder and presents with a heterogeneous group of symptoms. Managing these symptoms requires coordinated care from a neurology specialist and a primary care provider. Access to neurology care is limited for those patients with Parkinson's disease who reside in rural areas given financial and mobility constraints along with the rarity of specialty providers. Methods: To close this gap, we developed and implemented a telehealth-based Project ECHO® (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) program, "Parkinson ECHO," to provide education and support for rural clinicians and allied health members. The sessions focused on a topic within Parkinson's disease diagnosis or management followed by case discussions. We assessed the feasibility of this tele-mentoring educational offering, the favorability of this approach, and the effect it had on clinician confidence in diagnosing and treating Parkinson's disease using Likert-based surveys. Results: Thirty-three unique participants from 13 Oregon counties and one county in the state of Washington, of whom 70 % served rural and/or medically underserved communities, participated in Parkinson ECHO. There was a 52 % dropout rate based on survey response, though session attendance was higher. Participants were overall satisfied with the format and content of Parkinson ECHO. There were improvements in knowledge and confidence in diagnosing and treating Parkinson's disease which persisted 6 months following the conclusion of the program. Unexpectedly, two participants reported convening a multidisciplinary group to discuss improvements to PD care. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic was an unexpected obstacle, but the teleconference nature permitted us to complete the program to positive effect. We found Parkinson ECHO did significantly increase participant confidence levels in diagnosing and managing Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation and the impact on mental health is a major concern during COVID-19. Trait equanimity is expected to protect individuals from psychological distress associated with social isolation. The aim of this study is to examine the link between social isolation and psychological distress via the mediator equanimity. It was hypothesised that objective (few social contacts) and perceived social isolation (loneliness) would predict psychological distress and that equanimity would mediate these relationships. METHODS: Five hundred and seventy-eight adult United States participants were recruited and completed measures of objective social isolation and perceived social isolation (De Jong Gierveld Social Isolation scale), trait equanimity (Phenomenological Experience of Meditative Equanimity Scale), and psychological distress (Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale, Short Form, DASS-21). RESULTS: Objective social isolation negatively predicted psychological distress, but equanimity did not mediate this relationship. Perceived social isolation positively predicted psychological distress and equanimity mediated this relationship. LIMITATIONS: This study is limited by its cross-sectional and self-report design and by a United States sample, which may affect the generalisability of findings. CONCLUSIONS: Rather than a lack of social contact it is the "perceived" nature of isolation that is related to psychological distress and this relationship indirectly operates through trait equanimity. Individuals high in trait equanimity may be better protected from the impact of perceived social isolation. Clinical interventions can be adapted to include equanimity skills to mitigate perceived social isolation for individuals and reduce adverse outcomes.

This Review deals with the evolving field of polyhalogen chemistry, specifically polyhalogen anions (polyhalides). In addition to a historical outline, current progress in synthetic approaches towards the formation of polyfluorides, polychlorides, polybromides, and polyinterhalides is also illustrated. The structural diversity of polyhalides has substantially increased in the past decade, especially for polychlorides and polybromides, which are commonly characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations. Polyfluorides have been examined by sophisticated state-of-the-art quantum-chemical calculations and investigated spectroscopically in noble gas matrix-isolation experiments under cryogenic conditions at 4 K. The bonding in such polyhalide systems is also discussed. The last Section deals with applications of polyhalides in halogenation reactions and electrochemistry as well as their use as reactive ionic liquids, emphasizing the promising future of polyhalogen chemistry.

So far unknown bis(triarylphosphoranylidene)iminium cations [PPN]+ with one fluorine atom in para ([PPN-1F ]+ ), two in meta ([PPN-2F ]+ ), or three in para and meta positions of the phenyl rings ([PPN-3F ]+ ) were obtained by a newly developed one-pot reaction. These halogenated [PPN]+ cations were characterized by IR and Raman spectroscopy in comparison with quantum-chemical calculations, ESI+ mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. To assess their quality as weakly coordinating cations and the associated ability to stabilize labile anions, the electrostatic potential and fluoride-ion affinity were calculated and compared with those of the unsubstituted and so far unknown perfluorinated [PPN-5F ]+ cations.

RESUMO

Tetramethylammonium tetraiodopentabromide [NMe4 ][I4 Br5 ] was the first iodobromide to be synthesized and crystallized in an ionic liquid as well as in dichloromethane. The new iodobromides show different structure motives yet are unknown from other nonahalides and can be better described as [(I2 Br3 )- ⋅2 IBr]. The additional IBr units are connected by halogen-halogen interactions on the central V-shaped [I2 Br3 ]- . The characterization was performed by Raman spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray structure determination. Conductivity measurements, thermogravimetric analysis and quantum-chemical calculations completed the structural discussion.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Maximal cytoreductive surgery (CS) with heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy perfusion (HIPEC) for peritoneal carcinomatosis can improve oncologic outcomes, but is associated with significant morbidity. Whether low-volume experience with CS/HIPEC results in acceptable outcomes is unknown. METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients undergoing CS/HIPEC by a single surgeon. Experience was divided into first versus second 50 cases, and patient characteristics, operative details, and outcomes were compared. RESULTS: Ninety patients underwent 100 CS/HIPEC procedures (mean age 57 years, 68% female). -Compared to the initial experience, the second 50 cases included more high grade tumors (68 vs. 52%) and greater disease burden (PCI 14.2 vs. 12.4). Operative times remained unchanged and mean blood loss decreased (978 vs. 684 ml). Hospital stay (mean 18.1 vs. 12.6 days), major complications (24 vs. 16%), and perioperative mortality (8 vs. 2%) declined. Overall median survival was 18 months and was longer with low grade tumors (26 vs. 16 months, P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: Patients experienced reduced EBL, fewer major complications, and shorter hospital stay, despite having higher disease burden and higher grade tumors. This suggests that even low-volume experience with CS/HIPEC can lead to a trend in reduction of adverse perioperative events with acceptable oncologic outcomes.

Drosophila melanogaster cryptochrome is one of the model proteins for animal blue-light photoreceptors. Using time-resolved and steady-state optical spectroscopy, we studied the mechanism of light-induced radical-pair formation and decay, and the photoreduction of the FAD cofactor. Exact kinetics on a microsecond to minutes timescale could be extracted for the wild-type protein using global analysis. The wild-type exhibits a fast photoreduction reaction from the oxidized FAD to the FAD(•-) state with a very positive midpoint potential of ~ +125 mV, although no further reduction could be observed. We could also demonstrate that the terminal tryptophan of the conserved triad, W342, is directly involved in electron transfer; however, photoreduction could not be completely inhibited in a W342F mutant. The investigation of another mutation close to the FAD cofactor, C416N, rather unexpectedly reveals accumulation of a protonated flavin radical on a timescale of several seconds. The obtained data are critically discussed with the ones obtained from another protein, Escherichia coli photolyase, and we conclude that the amino acid opposite N(5) of the isoalloxazine moiety of FAD is able to (de)stabilize the protonated FAD radical but not to significantly modulate the kinetics of any light-inducted reactions.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 300 cases of leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava (IVC) have been reported in the literature to date. In this study, we combined the experience from 2 institutions to provide additional clinical outcomes data. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis from 1984 to 2009 that included 17 patients treated between the 2 institutions. Clinicopathologic data, surgical and adjuvant therapy, and survival outcomes were obtained. RESULTS: The median age of patients in the study was 48 years. The tumor location was infrarenal in 8 patients, juxtarenal in 6, and suprahepatic in 2 patients; 7 patients had high-grade tumors. All patients underwent complete resection; the IVC was repaired primarily in 5 patients, ligated in 5, and reconstructed with a prosthetic tube graft in 7 patients. There was no perioperative mortality; 6 patients had complications. Median follow-up was 49 months; median survival had not been reached when this paper was written. The 5-year overall and disease -free survival were 56% and 37%, respectively. Of the 17 patients, 10 experienced disease recurrence and underwent numerous treatment modalities for these recurrences. CONCLUSION: Aggressive resection of primary leiomyosarcoma of the IVC can be performed safely and result in long-term survival, irrespective of IVC management. Despite high recurrence rates, no consensus yet exists regarding adjuvant treatment.

RESUMO

Promoting tissue viability and caring for skin damaged as a result of radiotherapy are critical to the quality of care patients receive. However, few nurses recognise fully the effect of radiotherapy on tissue viability and wound healing. This article considers the causes and types of skin damage resulting from radiotherapy treatment that nurses may encounter, and how this damage can be graded. Based on the extent of skin reaction to radiotherapy, management options are explored, illustrated by a case study. A guide to product selection, derived from the authors' experience, is presented.
