BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infection is widely spread globally and is known to cause potentially serious diseases. Several diagnostic methods exist to identify and treat carriers of this bacterium. Serological tests for the diagnosis of infection are based on the detection of antibodies immunoglobulin G against H. pylori, a non-invasive, inexpensive, and easy-to-perform option. OBJECTIVE: This research aims to ascertain the accuracy of an immunochromatographic serological test to verify the feasibility of using this method in patients who have not undergone previous eradication therapy. METHODS: Rapid tests and questionnaires were applied to 53 patients that underwent upper digestive endoscopy with research for H. pylori between the period of September and October 2021. The results were compared with histopathology. RESULTS: In the rapid tests, seven positive and 46 negative results were obtained. When compared with the gold stan-dard, the following values were described: sensitivity 54.5%, specificity 97.6%, positive predictive value 85.7%, and negative predictive value 89.1%. CONCLUSION: In the present study, the immunochromatographic serological tests had an accuracy close to the values found in other similar studies. Therefore, it may be concluded that the rapid serological test remains a reasonable choice for screening large populations due to its low cost and ease of application, especially in those individuals who have not undergone previous treatment. RESUMO Contexto: A infecção pelo Helicobacter pylori apresenta-se amplamente difundida globalmente e é comprovadamente causadora de patologias potencialmente graves. Diversos métodos diagnósticos existem com o propósito de identificar e tratar os portadores dessa bactéria. Testes sorológicos para diagnóstico da infecção se baseiam na detecção de anticorpos imunoglobulina G anti-H.pylori, sendo uma opção não-invasiva, barata e de fácil realização. Objetivo: O objetivo dessa pesquisa é determinar a acurácia de um teste sorológico imunocromatográfico para verificar a viabilidade do uso desse método em pacientes que não realizaram terapia de erradicação prévia. Métodos: Foram aplicados testes rápidos e questionários em 53 participantes que realizaram endoscopia digestiva alta com pesquisa de H. pylori entre o período de setembro e outubro de 2021. Os resultados foram comparados com a histopatologia. Resultados: Foram obtidos nos testes rápidos 7 resultados positivos e 46 negativos. Ao comparar com o padrão-ouro, os seguintes valores foram descritos: Sensibilidade 54,5%, especificidade 97,6%, valor preditivo positivo 85,7% e valor preditivo negativo 89,1%. No presente estudo, os testes sorológicos imunocromatográficos tiveram acurácia próxima aos valores encontrados em outros trabalhos semelhantes. Conclusão: Sendo assim, conclui-se que o teste rápido sorológico permanece como escolha razoável para screening de grandes populações devido ao seu baixo custo e facilidade de aplicação, especialmente naqueles indivíduos que não realizaram tratamento prévio.

BACKGROUND: Maximal respiratory pressures (MRP) obtained at functional residual capacity (FRC) may reflect the real respiratory muscle pressure. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate concurrent validity, test-retest, and inter-rater reliability of MRP performed with a new instrument in healthy individuals, and to compare values obtained at different volumes in healthy individuals and individuals with COPD. METHODS: MRP of 100 healthy individuals were obtained using the TrueForce and the MicroRPM® at residual volume (RV) and total lung capacity (TLC) to evaluate concurrent validity. MRP were obtained at FRC using the TrueForce to evaluate reliability. Comparisons of inspiratory pressure values (FRC compared to RV) and expiratory pressure values (FRC compared to TLC) were performed with 100 healthy individuals and 15 individuals with COPD. RESULTS: The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was 0.77 and 0.86 for concurrent validity for inspiratory and expiratory pressures, respectively. Test-retest reliability showed an ICC of 0.87 for inspiratory pressure, and 0.78 for expiratory pressure; inter-rater reliability showed an ICC of 0.91 for inspiratory pressure, and 0.84 for expiratory pressure. Measurements performed at RV and TLC were higher when compared to FRC [mean difference (95%CI)= -8.30 (-11.82, -4.78) cmH2O; -37.29 (-42.63, -31.96) cmH2O] in healthy individuals, and -11.09 (-15.83, -6.35) cmH2O; -57.14 (-71.05, -43.05) cmH2O in COPD, for inspiratory and expiratory pressures, respectively. CONCLUSION: MRP performed with the TrueForce presented good concurrent validity, good test-retest reliability, excellent inter-rater reliability for inspiratory pressure and good inter-rater reliability for expiratory pressure. MRP were lower when obtained at FRC for healthy individuals and with COPD.

This study aimed to validate a 7 d progesterone (P4)-based fixed-time AI (FTAI) protocol for Bos indicus cattle by comparing to 8 and 9 d-type protocols. The first study compared 7 vs. 8 d protocols in Nelore heifers (Exp. 1.1; n = 742) and cows (Exp. 1.2; n = 2488), and the second study compared 7 vs. 9 d protocols in cows (Exp. 2; n = 1343). On experimental Day -10 and Day -11 the 8 and 9 d groups received an intravaginal P4 implant, 2.0 mg estradiol benzoate (EB) and 0.5 mg cloprostenol sodium (PGF). On Day -9 the 7 d group received the same treatments (P4, EB, and PGF). Then, on Day -2 all groups had the P4 implants removed, and PGF, 0.6 mg estradiol cypionate, and 300 IU equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG) was administered. Fixed-time AI was performed 48 h later (Day 0) and 8.4 mg buserelin acetate (GnRH) was administered to 7d-G, 8d-G and 9d-G groups, whereas 7d-0, 8d-0 and 9d-0 groups did not receive GnRH at AI. Estrus was detected using tail-chalk between Day -2 and Day 0. Pregnancy per AI (P/AI) was evaluated by ultrasound 30 d after AI. Effects were considered significant when P ≤ 0.05, whereas a tendency was designated when P ≤ 0.10 and P > 0.05. In heifers (Exp. 1.1), incidence of estrus was similar regardless of protocol length (7 or 8 d). There was no independent treatment effect on P/AI or interaction between protocol length and GnRH at AI for P/AI (7d-0: 46.9, 7d-G: 51.4, 8d-0: 47.7, and 8d-G: 43.6%). Heifers in estrus had greater P/AI, and GnRH had no additional effect. More cows (Exp. 1.2) from the 8 d protocol were in estrus than cows submitted to the 7 d protocol. Additionally, despite no interaction between protocol length and GnRH on P/AI (7d-0: 55.9, 7d-G: 60.9, 8d-0: 56.2, and 8d-G: 60.8%), GnRH at AI increased P/AI. There was no interaction between estrus and GnRH, but cows displaying estrus had greater P/AI. Cows not expressing estrus tended (P = 0.06) to have greater P/AI when receiving GnRH. In Exp. 2, more 9 d cows were in estrus than 7 d cows. Protocol length did not affect P/AI but tended (P = 0.08) to interact with GnRH (7d-G had greater P/AI [57.9%] than 7d-0 [47.6%], but 9d-0 [54.6%] and 9d-G [55.4%] were not different from other groups). Moreover, GnRH increased P/AI only for the 7 d protocol. No interaction between estrus and GnRH was detected but estrus improved P/AI, and GnRH tended (P = 0.09) to improve P/AI of cows in estrus. In conclusion, despite longer protocols being more conducive to expression of estrus, there were no detectable effects of protocol length on P/AI. In addition, GnRH at FTAI may improve fertility in cows, particularly when cows are treated with shorter protocols.

Wireless Sensors Networks (WSNs) are an essential element of the Internet of Things (IoT), and are the main producers of big data. Collecting a huge amount of data produced by a resource-constrained network is a very difficult task, presenting several challenges. Big data gathering involves not only periodic data sensing, but also the forwarding of queries and commands to the network. Conventional network protocols present unfeasible strategies for large-scale networks and may not be directly applicable to IoT environments. Information-Centric Networking is a revolutionary paradigm that can overcome such big data gathering challenges. In this work, we propose a soft-state information-centric protocol, ICENET (Information Centric protocol for sEnsor NETworks), for big data gathering in large-scale WSNs. ICENET can efficiently propagate user queries in a wireless network by using a soft-state recovery mechanism for lossy links. The scalability of our solution is evaluated in different network scenarios. Results show that the proposed protocol presents approximately 84% less overhead and a higher data delivery rate than the CoAP (Constrained Application Protocol), which is a popular protocol for IoT environments.

We proposed an experimental model to verify the Th17/Treg cytokine imbalance in COPD exacerbation. Forty C57BL/6 mice were exposed to room air or cigarette smoke (CS) (12 ± 1 cigarettes, twice a day, 30 min/exposure and 5 days/week) and received saline (50 µl) or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (1 mg/kg in 50 µl of saline) intratracheal instillations. We analyzed the mean linear intercept, epithelial thickness and inflammatory profiles of the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and lungs. We evaluated macrophages, neutrophils, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, Treg cells, and IL-10+ and IL-17+ cells, as well as STAT-3, STAT-5, phospho-STAT3 and phospho-STAT5 levels using immunohistochemistry and IL-17, IL-6, IL-10, INF-γ, CXCL1 and CXCL2 levels using ELISA. The study showed that CS exposure and LPS challenge increased the numbers of neutrophils, macrophages, and CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Simultaneous exposure to CS/LPS intensified this response and lung parenchymal damage. The densities of Tregs and IL-17+ cells and levels of IL-17 and IL-6 were increased in both LPS groups, while IL-10 level was only increased in the Control/LPS group. The increased numbers of STAT-3, phospho-STAT3, STAT-5 and phospho-STAT5+ cells corroborated the increased numbers of IL-17+ and Treg cells. These findings point to simultaneous challenge with CS and LPS exacerbated the inflammatory response and induced diffuse structural changes in the alveolar parenchyma characterized by an increase in Th17 cytokine release. Although the Treg cell differentiation was observed, the lack of IL-10 expression and the decrease in the density of IL-10+ cells observed in the CS/LPS group suggest that a failure to release this cytokine plays a pivotal role in the exacerbated inflammatory response in this proposed model.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are being increasingly used for data acquisition and control of remote devices. However, they present some constraints in critical and large-scale scenarios. The main limitations come from the nature of their components, such as lossy links, and devices with power supply limitations, poor processing power and limited memory. The main feature of software-defined networks (SDN) is the separation between the control plane and the data plane, making available a logically unified view of the topology in the controllers. In this way, it is possible to build network applications that take into account this unified view, which makes the SDN an alternative approach to solve the mentioned limitations. This paper presents the SD6WSN (software-defined 6LoWPAN wireless sensor network) architecture, developed to control the behavior of the data traffic in 6LoWPAN according to the SDN approach. It takes into account the specific characteristics of WSN devices, such as low data transfer rate, high latency, packet loss and low processing power, and takes advantage of the flexibility provided by flow-based forwarding, allowing the development of specific networking applications based on a unified view. We provide a detailed description of how we have implemented SD6WSN in the Contiki operating system. The new architecture is assessed in two experiments. The first considers a typical advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) network and measures the overhead of SD6WSN control messages in configurations involving different path lengths. The results indicate that the overhead introduced is not excessive, given the advantages that the SDN approach can bring. The second considers a grid-topology to evaluate the average latency of the peer-to-peer communication. It was observed that the average latency in the SD6WSN is considerably lower than that obtained with standard 6LoWPAN, showing the potential of the proposed approach.

The objective of the current study was to compare the effects of resistance training frequency on cognitive inhibitory control in young adults with previous experience in the modality. Male participants (N = 36) were randomly placed into one of three experimental groups. Participants performed resistance training 1 (F1), 2 (F2), and 3 (F3) times per week for 24 weeks. The three groups performed exercises of equal intensity, volume-load, and rest duration. Cognitive inhibitory control (via Stroop test) was tested 72 h before (pre-experiment) and 72 h after (post-experiment) the resistance training program. No time vs. group interaction effects were noted for accuracy (F(4, 29) = 3.57, p = 0.18) or response time (F(4, 29) = 2.61, p = 0.06) on the Stroop test. These results indicate that increased resistance training frequency, when volume-load is kept constant, does not appear to potentiate cognitive inhibitory control.

Background: Early sports practice is associated with several health benefits during childhood and adolescence, moreover, recent evidence also suggests that sports during childhood and adolescence can produce some benefits during adulthood. However, the association between early sports practice and arterial thickness is not clear. Thus, our aim was analyze the association between sports participation in childhood and adolescence, carotid/femoral intima⁻media thickness, and blood flow index in adulthood. Material and Methods: Sample was composed of 107 adults (64 males) between 30 years and 50 years, which were recruited from different gyms and university staff from São Paulo State University. Participants were divided according to sports participation in early life (engaged in sports during childhood and adolescence (n = 52) and no engagement in sports during childhood and adolescence (n = 55)). Carotid and femoral intima⁻media thickness were measured through Doppler ultrasonography method. Carotid and femoral index were estimated from ultrasonography measures. As covariates, the following were adopted: chronological age, sex, body fat (through dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry), c-reactive protein, HOMA, alcohol consumption, tobacco smoking, mean arterial pressure and current physical activity (pedometer). General estimating equations were used, adopting p < 0.05. Results: In the adjusted analyses, early sports participation was associated with lower carotid intima⁻media index (early sports participation: 0.64 mm ± 0.14 mm vs. no early sports participation: 0.71 mm ± 0.21 mm; p = 0.011), but not associated with femoral intima⁻media thickness, carotid resistive index and femoral resistive index after the adjustment by potential confounders. Conclusions: Sports participation in childhood and adolescence was associated with a reduced carotid intima⁻media thickness, independently of relevant confounders.

Obesity is often associated with increased risk of cardiometabolic morbidities and mortality. However, evidence shows that some obese individuals are more likely to develop such risk factors early in life, including those with Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). Whether the presence of MetS in obese people impairs cardiac autonomic modulation (CAM) remains to be investigated. METHODS: Cross-sectional study. Sixty-six subjects were classified as normal-weight (NW, n = 24) or obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg·m-2): metabolically healthy (MHO, n = 19) vs unhealthy (MUHO, n = 23: NCEP/ATPIII-MetS criteria). Body composition (bioimpedance), metabolic (glucose-insulin/lipid) and inflammatory profiles were determined. Linear and nonlinear heart rate variability (HRV) indices were computed at rest and during the submaximal six-minute step test (6MST). Blood pressure (BP) and metabolic and ventilatory variables were assessed (oxygen uptake, VO2; carbon dioxide production, VCO2; minute ventilation, VE) during the 6MST and the maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX). RESULTS: All groups reached the same 6MST intensity (VO2 ~ 80% and HR ~ 87% of CPX peak values). Both obese groups, independently of MetS, presented higher BP and lower maximal VO2 than NW. However, HRV differed between groups according to MetS at rest and during exercise: MUHO had lower meanRRi and SD1 than NW and lower RMSSD and pNN50 than MHO at rest; during exercise, the lowest SDNN, TINN, SD1 and Shannon entropy were observed for MUHO. Significant correlations were found between MetS, insulin resistance and HRV indices; and between insulin resistance and aerobic capacity (VO2peak). CONCLUSION: Obesity per se impairs aerobic-hemodynamic responses to exercise. However, MetS in obese young adults negatively impacts overall HRV, parasympathetic activity and HRV complexity.

High temperature and pressure effects on the physicochemical properties of binary oxides catalysts were investigated. The nanocomposites catalysts comprising of CeAl, CeMn and NiAl were characterized through various physicochemical techniques. A study of the temperature and pressure induced phenomena monitored by Raman spectroscopy was proposed and discussed. Spectral modifications of the Raman modes belonging to the CeMn suggest structural changes in the solid due to the MnO2 phase oxidation with increasing temperature. The thermal expansion and lattice anharmonicity effects were observed on CeMn due to lack of stability of the lattice vacancies. The CeAl and NiAl composites presented crystallographic stability at low temperatures however, undertake a phase transformation of NiO/Al2O3 into NiAl2O4, mostly without any deformation in its structure with increasing the temperature. It was also inferred that the binary oxides are more stables in comparison with monoxides. Detailed pressure-dependent Raman measurements of the T2g phonon mode of CeMn and NiAl revealed that the pressure contributes to modify bonds length and reduces the particles sizes of the solids. On the contrary, high pressure on CeAl sample improved the stability with addition of Al2O3 in the CeO2 lattice. The results then suggest a good stability of CeAl and NiAl composite catalysts at high pressure and low temperature and show how to prospect of tuning the catalysis for surface reactions entirely through in situ spectroscopic investigations means.

The objectives of the study were to compare the effects of resistance training using either a low cost and portable elastic tubing or conventional weight machines on muscle force, functional exercise capacity, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in middle-aged to older healthy adults. In this clinical trial twenty-nine middle-aged to older healthy adults were randomly assigned to one of the three groups a priori defined: resistance training with elastic tubing (ETG; n = 10), conventional resistance training (weight machines) (CTG; n = 9) and control group (CG, n = 10). Both ETG and CTG followed a 12-week resistance training (3x/week - upper and lower limbs). Muscle force, functional exercise capacity and HRQOL were evaluated at baseline, 6 and 12 weeks. CG underwent the three evaluations with no formal intervention or activity counseling provided. ETG and CTG increased similarly and significantly muscle force (Δ16-44% in ETG and Δ25-46% in CTG, p < 0.05 for both), functional exercise capacity (ETG Δ4 ± 4% and CTG Δ6±8%; p < 0.05 for both). Improvement on "pain" domain of HRQOL could only be observed in the CTG (Δ21 ± 26% p = 0.037). CG showed no statistical improvement in any of the variables investigated. Resistance training using elastic tubing (a low cost and portable tool) and conventional resistance training using weight machines promoted similar positive effects on peripheral muscle force and functional exercise capacity in middle-aged to older healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a worldwide disease related to genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors, and it is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Recently, obesity has been characterized by a low-grade inflammatory state known as inflammome indicated by chronic increases in circulating concentrations of inflammatory markers. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of weight loss induced by surgery for obesity and weight-related diseases on pro-inflammatory cytokine (TNF-α) and anti-inflammatory adipokine (adiponectin) levels, and on an adipose-derived hormone (leptin) in severely obese subjects. METHODS: This randomized, controlled trial involved 55 severe obese patients (50 women, age 18-63 years, and body mass index of 35.7-63 kg/m2) who underwent bariatric surgery (BS). Patients with a BMI > 65 kg/m2 and clinical and mental instability, or significant and unrealistic expectations of surgery were excluded. Blood samples were collected during the fasting period to analyze tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), adiponectin, and leptin levels by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: At baseline, no significant difference was observed in the anthropometric, demographic, clinical characteristics and biochemistry and inflammatory markers between the control group (CG) and bariatric surgery group (BSG). The same finding was also observed when we compared the baseline variables to those at the 6-month follow-up in the CG. However, the same variables in the BSG group were significantly different between baseline and the 6-month follow-up after BS. CONCLUSIONS: Weight loss induced by surgery for obesity and weight-related diseases reduced the inflammome state in severely obese patients.

Air pollution is a growing problem worldwide, inducing and exacerbating several diseases. Among the several components of air pollutants, particulate matter (PM), especially thick (10-2.5 µm; PM 10) and thin (≤2.5 µm; PM 2.5), are breathable particles that easily can be deposited within the lungs, resulting in pulmonary and systemic inflammation. Although physical activity is strongly recommended, its effects when practiced in polluted environments are questionable. Therefore, the present study evaluated the pulmonary and systemic response of concomitant treadmill training with PM 2.5 and PM 10 exposure. Treadmill training inhibited PM 2.5- and PM 10-induced accumulation of total leukocytes (p<0.001), neutrophils (p<0.001), macrophages (p<0.001) and lymphocytes (p<0.001) in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), as well as the BAL levels of IL-1beta (p<0.001), CXCL1/KC (p<0.001) and TNF-alpha (p<0.001), whereas it increased IL-10 levels (p<0.05). Similar effects were observed on accumulation of polymorphonuclear (p<0.01) and mononuclear (p<0.01) cells in the lung parenchyma and in the peribronchial space. Treadmill training also inhibited PM 2.5- and PM 10-induced systemic inflammation, as observed in the number of total leukocytes (p<0.001) and in the plasma levels of IL-1beta (p<0.001), CXCL1/KC (p<0.001) and TNF-alpha (p<0.001), whereas it increased IL-10 levels (p<0.001). Treadmill training inhibits lung and systemic inflammation induced by particulate matter.

Underwater acoustic networks (UAN) allow for efficiently exploiting and monitoring the sub-aquatic environment. These networks are characterized by long propagation delays, error-prone channels and half-duplex communication. In this paper, we address the problem of energy-efficient communication through the use of optimized channel coding parameters. We consider a two-layer encoding scheme employing forward error correction (FEC) codes and fountain codes (FC) for UAN scenarios without feedback channels. We model and evaluate the energy consumption of different channel coding schemes for a K-distributed multipath channel. The parameters of the FEC encoding layer are optimized by selecting the optimal error correction capability and the code block size. The results show the best parameter choice as a function of the link distance and received signal-to-noise ratio.

The advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is an architecture for two-way communication between electric, gas and water meters and city utilities. The AMI network is a wireless sensor network that provides communication for metering devices in the neighborhood area of the smart grid. Recently, the applicability of a routing protocol for low-power and lossy networks (RPL) has been considered in AMI networks. Some studies in the literature have pointed out problems with RPL, including sub-optimal path selection and instability. In this paper, we defend the viewpoint that careful planning of the transmission power in wireless RPL networks can significantly reduce the pointed problems. This paper presents a method for planning the transmission power in order to assure that, after convergence, the size of the parent set of the RPL nodes is as close as possible to a predefined size. Another important feature is that all nodes in the parent set offer connectivity through links of similar quality.

Envenomation by the South American opisthoglyphous snake Philodryas olfersii causes local pain, edema, erythema and ecchymosis; systemic envenomation is rare. In this work, we examined the inflammatory activity of P. olfersii venom (10, 30 and 60 µg) in mouse gastrocnemius muscle 6 h after venom injection. Intramuscular injection of venom did not affect hematological parameters such as red cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration. The venom caused thrombocytopenia (at all three doses), leukopenia and lymphopenia (both at the two highest doses), as well as neutrophilia (30 µg), monocytosis (30 µg) and basophilia (10 µg). Of the cytokines that were screened [IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-10, IL-13, IL-17, TNF-α, IFN-γ, MIP-2 and KC] and IGF-1, only IGF-1 showed a significant increase in its circulating concentration, seen with 60 µg of venom; there were no significant changes in the cytokines compared to control mice. Histological analysis revealed the presence of edema, an inflammatory infiltrate and progressive myonecrosis. Edema and myonecrosis were greatest with 60 µg of venom, while the inflammatory infiltrate was greatest with 10 µg of venom. All venom doses caused the migration of polymorphonuclear and mononuclear leukocytes into muscle, but with no significant dose-dependence in the response. These findings show that, at the doses tested, P. olfersii venom does not cause hematological alterations and has limited effect on circulating cytokine concentrations. These data also confirm that the principal effects of the venom in mice are local edema, inflammatory cell infiltration and myonecrosis.

BACKGROUND: Nucleoside/nucleotide analogue (NA) treatment causes selection pressure for HBV strains carrying mutations conferring NA resistance. Drug-resistance mutations occur in the reverse transcriptase (RT) region of the HBV polymerase gene and spontaneously arise during viral replication. These mutations can also alter the hepatitis B surface (HBs) protein and in some cases reduce binding to HBs antibodies. The spread of NA-resistant HBV may impact the efficacy of antiviral treatment and hepatitis B immunization programmes. In this study, we used direct sequencing to assess the occurrence of HBV carrying known mutations that confer NA resistance in the largest cohort of treatment-naive patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) to date. METHODS: HBV DNA samples isolated from 702 patients were sequenced and the RT region subjected to mutational analysis. RESULTS: There was high genetic variability among the HBV samples analysed: A1 (63.7%), D3 (14.5%), A2 (3.3%), A3 (0.1%), B1 (0.1%), B2 (0.1%), C2 (0.9%), D1 (0.9%), D2 (4.6%), D4 (5.1%), D unclassified subgenotype (0.7%), E (0.6%), F2a (4.6%), F4 (0.4%) and G (0.4%). HBV strains harbouring mutations conferring NA resistance alone or combined with compensatory mutations were identified in 1.6% (11/702) of the patients. CONCLUSIONS: HBV strains harbouring resistance mutations can comprise the major population of HBV quasispecies in treatment-naive patients. In Brazil, there is a very low frequency of untreated patients who are infected with these strains. These findings suggest that the spread and natural selection of drug-resistant HBV is an uncommon event and/or most of these strains remain unstable in the absence of NA selective pressure.
