RESUMO

Arbovirus, a critical threat to human health, have complex and dynamic life cycles. With reports of Yellow fever virus (YFV) causing spillover from sylvatic transmission cycles, and dengue (DENV), chikungunya (CHIKV), and Zika (ZIKV) viruses expanding from urban to rural areas. We explored a multidisciplinary approach to analyze arbovirus transmission through vectors, and identify biological and sociodemographic determinants associated with their transmission risk in urban and rural areas in a Colombian municipality. We visited 178 urban and 97 rural households, registered sociodemographic characteristics and vaccination status for each of these households, collected adult and immature mosquitoes at the intra-, peri-, and extra-domicile, and surveyed forest patches in rural areas. Infections of YFV, DENV, ZIKV, and CHIKV in the mosquitoes collected in the wild were analyzed using a reverse transcriptase PCR. We identified various risk factors of transmission associated with a high Aedes aegypti infestation in urban areas and their presence in rural settlements and Haemagogus janthinomys and other sylvatic mosquitoes near urban areas. The collected Ae. aegypti females from urban areas had a high infection rate of YFV (5.8%) and CHIKV (58.8%), and those from rural settlements had a high infection rate of DENV (33%), CHIKV (16.7%), and ZIKV (16.7%). The infection rates of YFV in the thorax of the sylvatic mosquitoes H. janthinomys and Aedes serratus collected from the forest patches were 14.3 and 42.1%, respectively. We could discern the transmission determinants associated with climatic, socioeconomic, and anthropogenic factors and YFV vaccination status. This multidisciplinary approach for surveillance of arboviral diseases allowed us to independently detect and integrate factors indicating an early risk of rural transmission of DENV, CHIKV, and ZIKV and rural and urban outbreaks of YFV in the study area. This study provides a helpful tool for designing and focalizing prevention strategies.

RESUMO

The Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) is the only extant member of the order Opisthocomiformes. This unique South American bird lives in the riparian lowland vegetation characteristic of the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Hoatzins nest in communal social units close to water bodies; they are strictly folivores being the only bird with pregastric fermentation in the crop. Because of the complex logistics involved in capturing this bird, there is a knowledge gap on its parasites. This study documents two distant lineages of haemosporidian parasites (Plasmodium spp.) in a juvenile and two adults sampled in the Cojedes state, Venezuela. Although negative by microscopy, the parasite identification was possible by using molecular methods. We estimated the phylogenetic relationships on the parasite cytochrome b (cytb, 480 bp) gene and the mitochondrial DNA. We found one of the parasites lineages in two individuals (nestling and adult), and the corresponding fragment of cytb was identical to a one found in Wood Stork (Mycteria americana) from Brazil. The other lineage, found in an adult, has an identity of 469 out of 478 bp (98%) with Plasmodium sp. GAL-2012 (isolate THAMB08) from Brazil. Although a morphological description of these parasites was not possible, this is the first molecular study focusing on Hoatzin haemosporidian parasites and the first documentation of Plasmodium infections in the Hoatzin from Venezuela. Furthermore, we reported microfilaria in two adults as well as hematological parameters for six individuals. Information on hematological parameters could contribute to establishing the necessary baseline to detect underlying conditions, such as infections, in this bird species.

RESUMO

Within olive oils, extra virgin olive oil is the highest quality and, in consequence, the most expensive one. Because of that, it is common that some merchants attempt to take economic advantage by mixing it up with other less expensive oils, like olive oil or olive pomace oil. In consequence, the characterization and authentication of extra virgin olive oils is a subject of great interest, both for industry and consumers. This paper reports the potential of front-face total fluorescence spectroscopy combined with second-order chemometric methods for the detection of extra virgin olive oils adulteration with other olive oils. Excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) of extra virgin olive oils and extra virgin olive oils adulterated with olive oils or with olive pomace oils were recorded using front-face fluorescence spectroscopy. The full information content in these fluorescence images was analyzed with the aid of unsupervised parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), PARAFAC supervised by linear discriminant analysis (LDA-PARAFAC), and discriminant unfolded partial least-squares (DA-UPLS). The discriminant ability of LDA-PARAFAC was studied through the tridimensional plots of the canonical vectors, defining a surface separating the established categories. For DA-UPLS, the discriminant ability was established through the bidimensional plots of predicted values of calibration and validation samples, in order to assign each sample to a given class. The models demonstrated the possibility of detecting adulterations of extra virgin olive oils with percentages of around 15% and 3% of olive and olive pomace oils, respectively. Also, UPLS regression was used to quantify the adulteration level of extra virgin olive oils with olive oils or with olive pomace oils.

RESUMO

Less than 25 cases of azygous vein lacerations secondary to blunt trauma have been published in the medical literature, most of these injuries were resulting from motor vehicle accidents, but have been described due to falls or assaults. These lesions should be considered as thoracic great vessels injuries and if not recognized promptly carry a high morbidity and mortality. We report a case of a young male involved in a high-speed car collision, admitted to the emergency room in an unstable condition secondary to hypovolemic shock due to azygous vein injury. The patient underwent emergent right antero-lateral thoracotomy followed by sternotomy for surgical control of the vascular injury and resuscitation. Laparotomy and splenectomy were also required, the abdomen was closed. The thoracic cavity was left packed and closure was delayed for 48 h. The patient survived and was transferred to another hospital seven days later.
