RESUMO

In recent years, significant development milestones have been reached in the areas of facilitated transport membranes and ionic liquids for CO2 separations, making the combination of these materials an incredibly promising technology platform for gas treatment processes, such as post-combustion and direct CO2 capture from air in buildings, submarines, and spacecraft. The developments in facilitated transport membranes involve consistently surpassing the Robeson upper bound for dense polymer membranes, demonstrating a high CO2 flux across the membrane while maintaining very high selectivity. This mini review focuses on the recent developments of facilitated transport membranes, in particular discussing the challenges and opportunities associated with the incorporation of ionic liquids as fixed and mobile carriers for separations of CO2 at low partial pressures (<1 atm).

The task-specific ionic liquid (IL), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium 2-cyanopyrolide ([EMIM][2-CNpyr]), was encapsulated with polyurea (PU) and graphene oxide (GO) sheets via a one-pot Pickering emulsion, and these capsules were used to scrub CO2 (0-5000 ppm) from moist air. Up to 60 wt % of IL was achieved in the synthesized capsules, and we demonstrated comparable gravimetric CO2 capacities to zeolites and enhanced absorption rates compared to those of bulk IL due to the increased gas/liquid surface-to-volume area. The reactive IL capsules show recyclability upon mild temperature increase compared to zeolites that are the conventional absorber materials for CO2 scrubbing. The measured breakthrough curves in a fixed bed under 100% relative humidity establish the utility of reactive IL capsules as moisture-stable scrubber materials to separate CO2 from air, outperforming zeolites owing to their higher selectivity. It is shown that thermal stability, CO2 absorption capacity, and rate of uptake by IL capsules can be further modulated by incorporating low-viscosity and nonreactive ILs to the capsule core. This study demonstrates an alternative and facile approach for CO2 scrubbing, where separation from gas mixtures with extremely low partial pressures of CO2 is required.

There has been much recent interest in the use of porous materials derived from self-assembling, shape-persistent organic cages due to their solubility and easy post-synthetic modification. Herein we report the preparation of novel mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) employing the porous organic cage Noria and its derivatives Noria-Boc and Noria-COtBu as the fillers, and a fluorine containing polyimide, 6FDA-DAM, as the polymeric matrix. The physical structures and properties of Noria and its derivatives were measured and investigated. Noria with substituents of Boc (cleaved by thermal treatment during the process of membrane fabrication) and COtBu groups tend to show much better compatibility with polyimide than Noria itself, resulting in homogeneous dispersion of nanoaggregates and fine adhesion between the two phases in the derived Noria/6FDA-DAM and Noria-COtBu/6FDA-DAM MMMs. Gas permeation tests revealed that Noria and Noria-COtBu nanoparticles have different effect on gas separation performance of MMMs. The introduction of Noria into 6FDA-DAM tends to enhance CO2/CH4 selectivity and thus improve its gas separation properties, though a decrease in the observed permeability could be observed. In contrast, the introduction of Noria-COtBu with higher surface area and larger pores tends to increase the free volume and gas permeability of MMMs. These results show that both the morphology and the gas separation properties of MMMs could be tuned by tailoring the structures of porous organic cages.

AMFR, autocrine motility factor receptor, also called gp78, is a cell surface cytokine receptor which has a dual role as an E3 ubiquitin ligase in endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation. AMFR expression is associated with tumor malignancy. We here investigated the clinical significance of AMFR and its role in metastasis and prognosis in gastric cancer. Expression of AMFR, E-cadherin and N-cadherin in cancer tissues and matched adjacent normal tissues from 122 gastric cancer (GC) patients undergoing surgical resection was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Levels of these molecules in 17 cases selected randomly were also analysed by Western blotting. AMFR expression was significantly increased in gastric cancer tissues, and associated with invasion depth and lymph node metastasis. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed AMFR expression correlated with poor overall survival and an increased risk of recurrence in the GC cases. Cox regression analysis suggested AMFR to be an independent predictor for overall and recurrence-free survival. E-cadherin expression was decreased in gastric cancer tissues; conversely, N-cadherin was increased. Expression of AMFR negatively correlated with E-cadherin expression, whereas N-cadherin expression showed a significant positive correlation with AMFR expression. AMFR might be involved in the regulation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, with aberrant expression correlating with a poor prognosis and promoting invasion and metastasis in GCs.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression and role of Grhl2 in gastric cancer. Immunohistochemistry was performed to explore the expression of Grhl2 in gastric cancer and surrounding non-tumor tissues. Moreover, the mRNA and protein expression level of Grhl2 in human immortalized gastric epithelial cell line GES-1 and four gastric cancer cell lines (MGC803, SGC7901, MKN45, HGC27) were detected by qRT-PCR and Western blotting, respectively. To further investigate the role of Grhl2 in gastric cancer as well as the potential mechanisms, SGC7901 cells were transfected with lentiviral constructs expressing Grhl2 or empty vector, and then proliferation and apoptosis of SGC7901 cells were evaluated by MTT assay and flow cytometry, respectively. Finally, the protein expression level of c-Myc and Bcl-2 was detected by Western blotting. Both mRNA and protein expression level of Grhl2 were significantly downregulated in gastric cancer. Exogenous Grhl2 transduced into SGC7901 cells significantly inhibited the proliferation and promoted apoptosis. Meanwhile, over-expression of Grhl2 decreased c-Myc and Bcl-2 protein expression level. Taken together, our results demonstrated that Grhl2 downregulated in gastric cancer and may function as a tumor suppressor and play an important role in the development and progression of gastric cancer. These results may provide a new clue for treatment for gastric cancer.
