RESUMO

The characteristics of N2O emission from a full-scale landfill leachate treatment system were investigated by in-situ monitoring over 1.4 years and driving factors responsible for these emissions were identified by statistical analysis of multidimensional environmental variables. The results showed that the maximum N2O emission flux of 2.21 × 107 mg N·h-1 occurred in the nitrification tanks, where 98.5 % of the total N2O was released, with only 1.5 % of the total N2O emitted from the denitrification tanks. Limited oxygen in nitrification tank was responsible for N2O hotspot. The N2O emissions from the parallel lines A and B (both comprising the primary biochemical system) accounted for 52.6 % and 46.6 %, respectively, while the secondary biochemical system contributed only 0.8 % to the total emissions. Higher nitrite concentration in line A and lower nitrogen loading in the secondary biochemical system caused these discrepancies. We found that during the steady state of leachate treatment, intensive N2O emissions of 253.4-1270.5 kg N·d-1 were measured. The corresponding N2O emission factor (EF) ranged from 8.86 to 49.6 %, much higher than those of municipal wastewater treatment. But N2O EF was inconceivably as low as 0.42 % averagely after system maintenance. Influent with low salinity was the key reason, followed by the high MLSS and varying microbial community after maintenance. The dominant genus shifted from Lentimicrobium and Thauera to Norank-F-Anaerolineaceae and Unclassified-F-Rhodocyclaceae. This study underscores the significance of landfill leachate treatment in urban nitrogen management and provides valuable insights into the characteristics and driving factors of N2O emissions from such systems. The findings offer important references for greenhouse gas emission inventories and strategies for N2O control in full-scale wastewater treatment plants.

RESUMO

Landfill leachate treatment processes tend to emit more N2O compared to domestic wastewater treatment. This discrepancy may be ascribed to leachate water characteristics such as high refractory COD, ammonium (NH4+) content, and salinity. In this work, the leachate influent was varied to examine the N2O emission scenarios. NH4+-N, COD, and Cl- concentrations ranged between 1000-2500, 1000-10,000, and 500-3000 mg L-1, respectively. Simultaneously, we attempted to combine statistical analysis with high-throughput sequencing to understand the microbial mechanism with regards to N2O emission. Results show that the strong N2O emissions occur in the nitrifying tank due to the intensive aeration. The system receiving the lowest COD shows the maximum N2O emission factor of 42.7% of the removed nitrogen. Both redundancy analysis and a structural equation model verify that insufficient degradable organics are the key water parameter triggering intensive N2O emission within the designed influent limits. Furthermore, two essential but non-abundant functional bacteria, Flavobacterium (acting as a denitrifier) and Nitrosomonas (acting as a nitrifier), are identified as the core functional species that dramatically influence N2O emissions. An increase in influent COD promotes the proliferation of Flavobacterium and inhibits Nitrosomonas, which in turn reduce N2O release. Meanwhile, two keystone species of Castellaniella and Saprospiraceae unclassified are recognized. They may supply a suitable niche and integrity of the microbial community for N-cycle functional bacteria. These findings reveal the essential role of non-abundant species in microbial community, and expand the current understanding of microbial interactions underlying N2O dynamics in leachate treatment systems.

RESUMO

In this study, the organic matter in an O3-based advanced oxidation process (AOP) for treating raw leachate (RL) and bio-treated leachate (BTL) was characterized. The optimal conditions for COD removal in RL and BTL treatment were as follows: initial pH of 6.0 and H2O2 dosage of 9 mL 30% H2O2 L-1 leachate, and initial pH of 12 without H2O2 addition, respectively. H2O2 addition had little influence on COD removal in the BTL treatment as sufficient hydroxyl radicals may not be produced at extremely high pH levels. The differences in the alkalinity between RL and BTL caused differences in the optimum pH of the AOPs. Overall, the initial pH more affected COD removal than the H2O2 dosage. O3-based AOP converted organics with high molecular weight fractions into low ones. Meanwhile, it preferentially degraded hydrophobic substances over hydrophilic substances. The organic matter in the BTL contained more refractory and hydrophobic fractions; therefore, higher COD removal was achieved in the treatment of RL. The organics in the treatment of RL and BTL were identified by excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis, and their degradation decreased in the following order: terrestrial humic-like > microbial humic-like > combination of tryptophan and humic-like components. O3-based AOP significantly enhanced biodegradability. According to the economic analysis results, as an intermediate treatment, O3-based AOP is a cost-effective strategy of ensuring that leachate effluent meets the discharge standards, with the lowest operating cost of $4.62 m-3. This study provides a reference for the application of O3-based AOP in full-scale landfill leachate treatment.

RESUMO

As a type of flexible impermeable material, a PVC geomembrane must be cooperatively used with cushion materials. The contact interface between a PVC geomembrane and cushion easily loses stability. In this present paper, we analyzed the shear models and parameters of the interface to study the stability. Two different cushion materials were used: the common extrusion sidewall and non-fines concrete. To simulate real working conditions, flexible silicone cushions were added under the loading plates to simulate hydraulic pressure loading, and the loading effect of flexible silicone cushions was demonstrated by measuring the actual contact areas under different normal pressures between the geomembrane and cushion using the thin-film pressure sensor. According to elastomer shear stress, there are two main types of shear stress between the PVC geomembrane and the cushion: viscous shear stress and hysteresis shear stress. The viscous shear stress between the geomembrane and the cement grout was measured using a dry, smooth concrete sample, then the precise formula parameters of the viscous shear stress and viscous friction coefficient were obtained. The hysteresis shear stress between the geomembrane and the cushion was calculated by subtracting the viscous shear stress from the total shear stress. The formula parameters of the hysteresis shear stress and hysteresis friction coefficient were calculated. The three-dimensional box-counting dimensions of the cushion surface were calculated, and the formula parameters of the hysteresis friction were positively correlated with the three-dimensional box dimensions.

RESUMO

Responses of a microbial community in the completely autotrophic nitrogen removal over nitrite (CANON) process, which was shocked by a pH of 11.0 for 12 h, were investigated. During the recovery phase, the performance, anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) activity, microbial community, and correlation of bacteria as well as the influencing factors were evaluated synchronously. The performance of the CANON process deteriorated rapidly with a nitrogen removal rate (NRR) of 0.13 kg·m-3·d-1, and Firmicutes, spore-forming bacteria, were the dominant phyla after alkaline shock. However, it could self-restore within 107 days after undergoing four stages, at which Planctomycetes became dominant with a relative abundance of 64.62%. Network analysis showed that anammox bacteria (Candidatus Jettenia, Kuenenia, and Brocadia) were positively related to some functional bacteria such as Nitrosomonas, SM1A02, and Calorithrix. Canonical correspondence analysis presented a strong correlation between the microbial community and influencing factors during the recovery phase. With the increase of nitrogen loading rate, the decrease of free nitrous acid and the synergistic effects, heme c content, specific anammox activity (SAA), NRR, and the abundance of dominant genus increased correspondingly. The increase of heme c content regulates the quorum sensing system, promotes the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances, and further improves SAA, NRR, and the relative abundance of the dominant genus. This study highlights some implications for the recovery of the CANON reactor after being exposed to an alkaline shock.

RESUMO

The impact of damaged sidewalls at the joints between tubes on dam structures subjected to horizontal seepage is investigated. First, an experimental scheme is designed to test the mode and critical gradient of seepage failure of the soil in the damaged tubes. The effects of various overburden pressures (0, 5, 10, 20, and 30 kPa), hole radii(0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2 cm) and soil specimen properties were studied. The test phenomena and the changes in the pore water pressure were used to determine the seepage failure modes and the critical gradients under different conditions. Combined with the modified Terzaghi soil arching theory, a mathematical model was developed for the critical gradient for soil seepage failure. The model fitting curve was in good agreement with the laboratory test results. The critical gradient is independent of the overburden pressure and weakly dependent on the internal friction angle of the soil. The critical gradient increases with the cohesion. For fixed characteristic soil parameters, the critical gradient decreases at a gradually decreasing rate as the radius of the damaged hole increases.
