BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the neurological diseases that affect the ability of subjects to stand and walk. The stability of MS subjects has been evaluated in various studies, mostly based on linear approach. Based on this approach it is controversial weather stability of MS subjects differ from normal or not. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate stability in three groups of MS subjects (spastic, ataxic and ataxic-spastic) using both linear and non-linear approaches. METHOD: Seventeen healthy and 36 subjects with MS participated in this study. The MS group presenting with spastic, ataxic and ataxic-spastic (each group consisted of 12 subjects) participated in the study. The stability of the subjects was evaluated using Kistler force plate. The difference between stability of the subjects was evaluated using the Multi Analysis of Variance and significant value was set at P < 0.05. RESULT: There was a significant difference in the mean value of Approximate Entropy (ApEn) in anterior-posterior direction between normal (0.66 ± 0.13) and ataxic (0.85 ± 0.12) and ataxic-spastic (0.90 ± 0.12) subjects (P < 0.05) and no difference between normal and spastic groups (0.76 ± 0.13). The results of both linear and nonlinear approaches confirmed that both ataxic and ataxic-spastic subjects had more instability than normal subjects. Although, the mean values of stability parameters increased in spastic compared to normal, the difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Subjects with ataxic and ataxic-spastic MS disorder had difficulty in controlling their stability during quiet standing. The results of this study also confirmed that spasticity of muscles surrounding the hip and knee joints did not influence standing stability in patients with spastic MS.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Enhanced muscle strength is seen when resistance exercise is combined with the consumption of nutritional supplements. Although there is a limited number of studies available about the efficacy of gamma oryzanol supplementation with resistance exercise in humans, but its usage as a nutritional supplement for strength is common in athletes. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of gamma oryzanol supplementation during 9-week resistance training on muscular strength and anthropometric measurements of young healthy males. METHODS: In this double-blind clinical trial, changes of anthropometric measurements and muscular strength were studied after chronic resistance exercise and gamma oryzanol supplementation in 30 healthy volunteers (16 in supplement and 14 in placebo). Each day, gamma oryzanol supplement (600 mg) and placebo (the same amount of lactose) were consumed after training. The participants exercised with 80 per cent 1-Repetition Maximum (1-RM), for one hour and four days/week. Anthropometric measurements and subjects' 1-RM for muscular strength were determined at the commencement and end of the 9-week study. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the baseline characteristics and target variables at baseline between the two groups. After gamma oryzanol supplementation, there was no significant difference in the means of anthropometric and skin fold measurements between the supplement and placebo groups. However, there were significant differences between the supplement and placebo groups for 1-RM of bench press and leg curl, which showed that gamma oryzanol improved muscle strength following resistance training. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicated that 600 mg/day gamma oryzanol supplementation during the 9-week resistance training did not change anthropometric and body measurements, but it increased muscular strength in young healthy males. Further, studies need to be done in trained athletes, women, and in patients who suffer from muscular fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a worldwide major public health problem in both developed and developing countries. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of obesity and overweight in 12-14-year-old students in the city of Isfahan. METHODS: This study was conducted among 10,531 girls and 2415 boys aged 12-14 years in the city of Isfahan. Percentage of children in the corresponding body mass index (BMI) categories for overweight and obesity (specified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria percentiles) were assessed, based on preventive plan of inactivity in children and youth of Isfahan province. RESULTS: Findings revealed that prevalence of overweight in children varied by age from 15.3% to 26.9% in boys and 12.9% to 29.9% in girls, and prevalence of obesity varied from 14.8% to 33.7% and 15% to 29.9% in boys and girls, respectively. Percentile norms for BMI of subjects were computed based on sex categories. CONCLUSIONS: To conclude, results of the study revealed that subjects have approximately the same percentage of overweight/obesity compared to other children have been studied; however, in comparison to previous studies, a higher rate was witnessed in grade 8 boy students. These situations indicate that there are needs to implement some intervention programs, as well as management policies.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disorders are an important public health problem worldwide. They are also the leading cause of mortality and morbidity. Therefore, American Heart Association proposed cardiac rehabilitation program as an essential part of care for cardiac patients to improve functional capacity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of cardiac rehabilitation program on functional status and some hemodynamic responses in patients after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. METHODS: Thirty two patients were selected for this study. All patients underwent cardiac surgery two months before admission. They were allocated to two groups. While the rehabilitation group (n =17, mean age: 62 ± 12 years) completed the cardiac rehabilitation program for two months, the reference group (n = 15, mean age: 58.5 ± 12.5 years) did not have any supervised physical activity during this period. Cardiac rehabilitation program consisted of exercise, nutritional, psychological consultation and risk factor management. At the beginning of the study, functional capacity of patients was evaluated by exercise test, 6-minute walking test and echocardiography. Functional capacity was evaluated for a second time after two months of cardiac rehabilitation. Data were analyzed by SPSS(15). For comparing the mean of outcomes, Mann-Whitney test and Wilcoxon signed ranks test were used. RESULTS: As a result of cardiac rehabilitation, a significant improvement was observed in the distance walked in the rehabilitation group (P < 0.01) compared to the reference group (P = 0.33). It also caused a significant development in hemodynamic responses to exercise such as resting and maximum systolic and diastolic blood pressure, resting and maximum heart rate, ejection fraction and rate pressure product. CONCLUSION: Cardiac rehabilitation significantly improves functional capacity and some hemodynamic responses post coronary artery bypass grafting. Therefore, patients need to be referred to rehabilitation units.
