RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The age of menarche has been gradually declining since the end of the 20th century. Few studies have been carried out about dysmenorrhea in Europe and they mainly included girls over the age of 15 years. METHODS: We conducted an observational study among sixth-grade schoolgirls (usually 11-12 years) during the 2020 academic year in 72 randomly selected public schools in a French region (approval number #20.94). RESULTS: Among 1712 girls interviewed, 257 (23 %) had reached menarche. Overall, 83 % of these teenagers had dysmenorrhea. Symptoms were reported to occur since the first periods in 59 % of the girls. School absenteeism was positively correlated with severe abdominal pain (p = 0.001). Median age at menarche was 11 years (10.7-11.5). Periods lasted less than 3 days, 3-8 days, and more than 8 days in, respectively, 18 %, 70 %, and 7 % of the girls. Symptoms were significantly more frequent and more severe in the urban group than the rural group (p = 0.005). Symptoms were abdominal pain (70 %), fatigue (48 %), difficulty in concentrating (26 %), headache (25 %), digestive disorders (16 %), and breast discomfort (11 %). Of the girls with dysmenorrhea, 61 % took painkillers; 10 % were uncomfortable despite taking painkillers. Sport exemption was more frequent in the urban group (p = 0.003) and among girls with severe abdominal pain (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The duration of the menstrual cycle was similar between the various socioeconomic groups, but symptoms and ways of coping were significantly different. Dysmenorrhea is definitely an issue that has to be raised with teenagers as soon as menarche occurs or even before that. Easy access to skilled health practitioners should be widespread.

RESUMO

The synthesis of γ-lactams is reported by a formal (3+2) cycloaddition between readily available ketenes and aziridines or a one-pot formal (2+1+2) cycloaddition using imines as aziridine precursors. The method is practical, is scalable, and affords high yields. It also offers a high level of regio- and diastereoselectivity on a wide range of substrates as well as a high stereoselectivity in the case of enantiopure aziridines.

RESUMO

The new political economy of aging portrays "active citizenship" among seniors as a key challenge for the years to come. As a policy framework, Active Aging ranks high on the agendas of most supranational bodies. Informed by discourse analysis and a narrative approach, this article focuses on, first, older women's everyday "active" practices, their meaning, and purpose and second, their day-to-day practical citizenship and social engagement experiences. A typology consisting of four figures of "lived" citizenship is proposed. Social contribution in later age is expressed through various types of engagement identified through these citizenship figures. These figures support older women's social anchoring and sustain their feeling of belonging to the community. However, the figures outlined also reveal tensions, produced by relations of power between "dominant citizenship" and "relational citizenship," pertaining to social relations and to caring for the other. In the latter case, we see that the coupling of action between the choice of action and social engagements in later age is more limited, due to social and health inequalities as well as lack of opportunities throughout the life course. Finally, in order to guarantee the right to age with dignity, we suggest a change of orientation in aging policies.

RESUMO

This article sets out to analyze how older women understand grandmotherhood. In-depth interviews were conducted with 25 elderly women from Quebec with diverse lives (widowed, married, single, with or without children) drawn from three generations (65-74 years, 75-84 years, 85 years and over) according to principles of qualitative analysis using grounded theory. Based on a constructivist approach, results highlight the evolution of images of grandmotherhood offering the benefit of emotional, playful and comforting roles. This analysis also reveals multiple ways of being a grandmother and commitments that vary according to three principal factors: (1) the personality and life trajectory of the grandmothers; (2) the family situation and role of crisis in the family; and (3) the degree of intimacy with grandchildren. There follows a discussion on the place and role of the family in the lives of older women today.

RESUMO

The AdeABC pump of Acinetobacter baumannii BM4454, which confers resistance to various antibiotic classes including aminoglycosides, is composed of the AdeA, AdeB, and AdeC proteins; AdeB is a member of the RND superfamily. The adeA, adeB, and adeC genes are contiguous and adjacent to adeS and adeR, which are transcribed in the opposite direction and which specify proteins homologous to sensors and regulators of two-component systems, respectively (S. Magnet, P. Courvalin, and T. Lambert, Antimicrob. Agents Chemother. 45:3375-3380, 2001). Analysis by Northern hybridization indicated that the three genes were cotranscribed, although mRNAs corresponding to adeAB and adeC were also present. Cotranscription of the two regulatory genes was demonstrated by reverse transcription-PCR. Inactivation of adeS led to aminoglycoside susceptibility. Transcripts corresponding to adeAB were not detected in susceptible A. baumannii CIP 70-10 but were present in spontaneous gentamicin-resistant mutants obtained in vitro. Analysis of these mutants revealed the substitutions Thr153-->Met in AdeS downstream from the putative His-149 site of autophosphorylation, which is presumably responsible for the loss of phosphorylase activity by the sensor, and Pro116-->Leu in AdeR at the first residue of the alpha(5) helix of the receiver domain, which is involved in interactions that control the output domain of response regulators. These mutations led to constitutive expression of the pump and, thus, to antibiotic resistance. These data indicate that the AdeABC pump is cryptic in wild A. baumannii due to stringent control by the AdeRS two-component system.
