RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Clinicians working in inpatient psychiatry provide health care to some of the most seriously ill and vulnerable patients with mental illness. Continuing education is a mechanism through which practicing nurses maintain and improve clinical knowledge and skills. This project aimed to assess mental health care-related knowledge and learning needs of nurses working in psychiatry. METHOD: This cross-sectional survey study used total population sampling. RESULTS: Nurses were the most knowledgeable about direct patient care and felt the least knowledgeable about engaging in service to the public. Participants desired further learning about violent situations. CONCLUSION: Our results provide insight into the learning needs of nurses working in psychiatry and shed light on areas requiring further investigation into how to best support the competence of nurses working in psychiatry.
