In transplant specifications, a psychiatric and/or psychological opinion is requested before any intervention with pre- and post-operative psychological management. This transplant candidate evaluation must be based on two criteria: preparation for a heavy procedure and proper adherence to post-transplant anti-rejection treatments.

Twenty patients across the world have received a face transplant. A research protocol approved by the French national consultative committee of ethics in 2002 has enabled 9 transplants to take place in France.
