OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between nasal nitric oxide (nNO) and olfactory sensitivity, trigeminal sensitivity and nasal airflow in healthy subjects. STUDY DESIGN: This is a correlational study. SETTING: This study was carried out in a tertiary referral centre. PARTICIPANTS: Forty healthy participants were recruited. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: nNO was measured using a chemiluminescence analyser (Niox Vero® , Circassia AB, Uppsala, Sweden), olfactory sensitivity was determined using phenyl ethyl alcohol odour thresholds using the 'Sniffin' Sticks', trigeminal sensitivity was assessed with carbon dioxide delivered by an automated device, and nasal airflow was measured using the peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF). RESULTS: The median nNO was 518 ppb (IQR =333) in the right nostril, and it was 567 ppb (IQR = 314) in the left nostril. The median odour threshold was 7.1 (IQR = 4.4), the median CO2 threshold was 919 ms (IQR = 1297) and the mean PNIF was 108 L/min (SEM = 4.9). nNO did not correlate significantly with odour threshold, CO2 threshold or PNIF (Spearman's |ρ|  <0.15, p > .18). CONCLUSION: In healthy subjects, nNO does not appear to be associated with olfactory sensitivity, trigeminal sensitivity and PNIF.

The breast phyllodes tumor is a biphasic tumor that accounts for less than of 1% of all breast neoplasms. It is classified as benign, borderline, or malignant, and can mimic benign masses. Some recurrent alterations have been identified. However, a precise molecular classification of these tumors has not yet been established. Herein, we describe a case of a 43-year-old woman that was admitted to the emergency room for a significant bleeding from the breast skin. A voluminous ulcerative mass of the left breast and multiple nodules with micro-calcifications on the right side were detected at a physical examination. A left total mastectomy and a nodulectomy of the right breast was performed. The histological diagnosis of the surgical specimens reported a bilateral giant phyllodes tumor, showing malignant features on the left and borderline characteristics associated with a fibroadenoma on the right. A further molecular analysis was carried out by an array-Comparative Genomic Hybridization (CGH) to characterize copy-number alterations. Many losses were detected in the malignant mass, involving several tumor suppressor genes. These findings could explain the malignant growth and the metastatic risk. In our study, genomic profiling by an array-CGH revealed a greater chromosomal instability in the borderline mass (40 total defects) than in the malignant (19 total defects) giant phyllodes tumor, reflecting the tumor heterogeneity. Should our results be confirmed with more sensitive and specific molecular tests (DNA sequencing and FISH analysis), they could allow a better selection of patients with adverse pathological features, thus optimizing and improving patient's management.

PURPOSE: Serum supplementation has shown to have beneficial effects on in vitro bovine embryo development. However, it is often assumed that serum supplementation may produce mitochondrial damage and this damage would generate lipid accumulation, a major obstacle for cryopreservation. The aim of the present study is to investigate the previous assumptions in early embryonic stages. METHODS: We considered in vitro produced bovine embryos from day 1 to 4 of development, which were grown in presence of serum from days 1, 2 or 3 or in absence of it. Electron transmission micrographs allowed us to quantify the area occupied by lipid droplets and by the different mitochondrial types to evaluate serum effect. Using confocal microscopy we analyzed mitochondrial activity and location. RESULTS: We found no evidence of lipid droplets accumulation or mitochondrial degeneration or reduction of mitochondrial area in serum supplemented media. Further, our results suggest that events of mitochondrial proliferation are taking place even in serum supplemented media. CONCLUSIONS: Serum does not produce lipid accumulation or mitochondrial damage in bovine embryos from 2 to 16 cells. When serum was added to embryo culture medium on day 3 of development, there were ultrastructural signs of a beneficial effect for embryo development. The lack of serum until day 3 may also avoid the unnecessary exposure to potentially inhibitory factors present on it.

Cyclospora spp. is a protozoan parasite responsible for significant gastrointestinal disease in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. We report the clinical features of two patients with chronic diarrhea and intestinal cyclosporosis caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis. The average value for CD4 count in these patients was lower than or equal to 100 cells/mm3. The oocysts were detected in smears from stool samples stained with modified acid-fast or safranin technique. Light microscopy revealed parasites in the enterocytes and these parasites were associated with villous atrophy. Cyclospora cayetanensis infection might be an important cause of diarrhea in patients with AIDS in Argentina.

The submicroscopic morphology of the vitelline envelope of Bufo arenarum's oocyte change significantly during the maturation and fertilization processes. The morphological changes are related to physiological activity in vivo and can be triggered in vitro by experimental procedures. It is our scope to present the ultrastructure differences of fascicular components of the vitelline envelope in coelomic, "pars recta" conditioned, oviductal, oviposited and fertilized oocytes. Our experimental results indicate that artificial "pars recta" treatment of coelomic oocytes arrange the fascicular components as those of oviposited oocyte, although differences still remain indicating that additional maturation processes take place while the egg pass througth the oviduct. Fertilized or activated oocytes which are refractary to sperm penetration, change the vitelline envelope fascicular components orientation giving a submicroscopical image quite different to those of none fertilized oocytes. These ultrastructural changes define in a clear cut manner the functional states of Bufo arenarum's oocyte.

Acrosome breakdown in Leptodactylus chaquensis is described: during this process acrosome enlarges, becomes round-shaped and finally disrupts. Low tonicity media (0.025 M sucrose and 1/10 Holtfreter's solutions) favor acrosome breakdown and sperm fertility loosing. High tonicity media (0.250 M sucrose and Holtfreter's solutions) maintain acrosomes in an unreacted stage and sperm fertilizing capacity is preserved. Sperm motility does not seem to be a sufficient condition for the sperm to fertilize and also does not seem to be related with acrosome breakdown. The presence of lectins in the incubation media does not modify the time-course of acrosome breakdown.
