RESUMO

Ivermectin (IVM) is a widely used antiparasitic. Concerns have been raised about its environmental effects in the wetlands of Río de la Plata basin where cattle have been treated with IVM for years. This study investigated the sublethal effects of environmentally relevant IVM concentrations in sediments on the Neotropical fish Prochilodus lineatus. Juvenile P. lineatus were exposed to IVM-spiked sediments (2 and 20 µg/Kg) for 14 days, alongside a control sediment treatment without IVM. Biochemical and oxidative stress responses were assessed in brain, gills, and liver tissues, including lipid damage, glutathione levels, enzyme activities, and antioxidant competence. Muscle and brain acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE) and stable isotopes of 13C and 15N in muscle were also measured. The lowest IVM treatment resulted in an increase in brain lipid peroxidation, as measured by thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs), decreased levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) in gills and liver, increased catalase activity (CAT) in the liver, and decreased antioxidant capacity against peroxyl radicals (ACAP) in gills and liver. The highest IVM treatment significantly reduced GSH in the liver. Muscle (AChE) was decreased in both treatments. Multivariate analysis showed significant overall effects in the liver tissue, followed by gills and brain. These findings demonstrate the sublethal effects of IVM in P. lineatus, emphasizing the importance of considering sediment contamination and trophic habits in realistic exposure scenarios.

This study explores the relationship between poultry farming's antibiotic administration practices and residual antibiotic levels in the litter before its application onto agricultural soils. Twenty-three antibiotics were performed across 19 Argentinean farms representing diverse antibiotic management practices. Analysis revealed up to 20 antibiotics from eight chemical classes in poultry litter samples, with tylosin, enrofloxacin, and salinomycin being the most relevant drugs. Farms with restricted antibiotic use in feed exhibited lower residual concentrations. A self-heating treatment was tested to reduce litter antibiotic levels. Although a 60 % reduction of antibiotics was found after treatment, prevalent compounds persisted at residual levels. Regulatory measures and comprehensive litter treatments pre-application are crucial to mitigate environmental risks. This is the first study that provides insight on the occurrence of >20 drugs in real poultry production scenarios from Latin America and demonstrates how relatively simple treatments can be readily applied to decrease the associated environmental risks.

Carbamazepine is a widely used antiepileptic drug to control and treat a variety of disorders that is frequently detected in surface water, and in municipal and urban wastewater. This recalcitrant pollutant could be removed by alternative advanced oxidation technology such as heterogeneous photocatalysis. Ce-modified ZnO and Pd-modified TiO2 were synthesized by a microwave-assisted sol-gel method. According to the characterizations (Raman spectroscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), a mixture of oxides was determined in both materials: CeO2/ZnO and PdO/TiO2. Photocatalytic degradation of carbamazepine in pure water under visible light (3 h) was assayed. The degradation percentage obtained with each catalyst was 80%, 53%, 20%, and 9% for ZnO, Ce-modified ZnO, TiO2, and Pd-modified TiO2, respectively. The leaching of Zn as a possible source of water contamination was tested, finding the lowest value for Ce-modified ZnO by adjusting the initial pH up to neutrality. Later, an environmentally relevant concentration of carbamazepine (228 µg L-1) was assayed, using local surface water (pH = 8.3). Despite the presence of other compounds in the real water matrix, after 5 h of photocatalysis, a 56% of degradation of the pharmaceutical and low leaching of Zn were achieved. The use of Ce-modified ZnO activated by visible light is a promising strategy for the abatement of pharmaceutical active compounds.

Veterinary pharmaceuticals have become of interest due to their indiscriminate use. Thus, this paper compiles studies on detection in surface and wastewater, and the treatment applied for their removal. Additionally, a case study was performed to evaluate its commercialization, as the ecological risk assessment for the most relevant compounds. 241 compounds were detected. The highest concentrations were found for antibiotics such as oxytetracycline, amoxicillin, and monensin, with values up to 3732.4 µg/L. Biological treatments have been mainly reported, obtaining removal greater than 80% for sulfadiazine, sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole, enrofloxacin, and oxytetracycline. Considering the case study, enrofloxacin and oxytetracycline were widely commercialized. Finally, there was a low risk for the species exposed to enrofloxacin, in contrast, the species exposed to oxytetracycline presented a high risk of long-term mortality. Concluding that veterinary compounds have emerged as a significant concern regarding water source contamination, owing to their potential adverse effects on aquatic biota and even human. This is particularly relevant because many water bodies that receive wastewater are utilized for drinking water purposes. Consequently, the development of comprehensive, full-scale systems for efficient antibiotic removal before their introduction into water sources becomes imperative. Equally important is the need to reconsider their extensive use altogether.

The current agricultural production model was established in the 1990s based on the use of genetically modified organisms and agrochemicals, mainly pesticides. Despite pesticide spread and prevalence, data on the associated concentrations in surface watercourses are comparatively scarce. The aim of this work was to evaluate to what extent the >20 years of agricultural activity with the use of pesticides has impacted on the Gualeguay-River basin, with respect to the different stream orders: the tributary streams and main channel. Thirteen sites within the lower Gualeguay basin were sampled once every season (autumn, winter, spring, and summer) in 2017-2018. The samples were analyzed by gas chromatography time-of-flight mass-spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS) and ultraperformance liquid chromatography tandem mass-spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The most frequently detected pesticide was glyphosate along with its metabolite (aminomethyl)phosphonic acid (AMPA), at 82 % and 71 % of surface water samples and 97 % and 92 % of bottom sediments, respectively; followed by atrazine in 73 % of the water samples. The concentrations of these compounds, each in their respective matrices, did not present sufficient statistically significant differences for differentiating a tributary stream from the main channel. Regardless of glyphosate's affinity for the suspended particulate and bottom sediments, over the entire basin the soluble fraction contributed on average to >80 % of the total concentration in surface water. Despite not being so frequently detected, certain insecticides, mostly deltamethrin, were likewise detected at concentrations above their water-quality guidelines for the protection of aquatic life, even in samples from the main channel. Upon comparison of the pesticide profiles of extensive- and horticultural-production systems in the country, atrazine emerged as a prime candidate to be used as a tracer of extensive agriculture contamination in the environment. Further research is required to establish to what degree pesticides used in agriculture and mobilized by watercourses have an impact on their associated wetland ecosystems.

Peri-urban horticulture is crucial to local populations, but a global paucity of information exists regarding the contamination of the associated waterways because of this activity. The aim of this study was to assess pesticide pollution of surface water, suspended particulate matter and bottom sediments from the Carnaval Creek Basin (La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina) - a representative system of waterways surrounded by horticultural production - by over 40 selected herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides by gas-chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and ultraperformance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Six sampling campaigns were conducted biannually from 2015 to 2017. Glyphosate and (aminomethyl)phosphonic acid (AMPA), surprisingly, were the most frequently detected pesticides, in concentrations comparable to those reported in areas with genetically modified extensive crops (maximum in water, 20.04 and 4.86 µg·L-1; in sediment, 1146.5 and 4032.7 µg·kgdw-1, respectively). The insecticides chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin and λ-cyhalothrin were detected in more than 30% of the samples. The concentrations tended to greatly exceed those previously reported - by up to more than 800 times for chlorpyrifos in water (maximum 2.645 µg·L-1) and more than 400 times for lambda-cyhalothrin in sediments (maximum 2607.7 µg·kgdw-1). The total pesticide concentration in surface water was found to be influenced by precipitation regimes but was independent of the season of the year, with precipitations of more than 140 mm diluting the pesticide concentrations to levels below detection limits. An environmental risk assessment performed with the pesticide concentrations of pesticides in surface water revealed that the surrounding horticultural activity posed a high risk for aquatic biota, with 30% of the samples exceeding the threshold value by more than a thousand times. We conclude that pesticides from horticultural use are a major threat to small streams and their biodiversity. This work provides valuable information that is scarce regarding the impact on watercourses exclusively as a consequence of horticulture.

Triclosan (TCS) is a synthetic broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent commonly used world-wide in a range of personal care and sanitizing products detected frequently in aquatic ecosystems. The aim of this study was to examine biochemical markers responses triggered by TCS in Danio rerio and in a native South American fish species (Corydoras paleatus). Further, an integrated approach comparing both test fish species was undertaken. These fish organisms were exposed to 100 or 189 µg TCS/L for 48 h. The activities of catalase (CAT), glutathione-s-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and lipid peroxidation levels (LPO) and total antioxidant capacity against peroxyl radicals (ACAP) were determined in liver, gills, and brain. Acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE) was measured in the brain. Multivariate analysis showed that the most sensitive hepatic parameters were activities of GST and SOD for C. paleatus while LPO levels were for D. rerio. In gills the same parameters were responsive for C. paleatus but CAT in D. rerio. ACAP and GST activity were responsive parameters in brain of both species. Integrated biomarker responses (IBR) index demonstrated similar trends in both species suggesting this parameter might serve as a useful tool for quantification of integrated responses induced by TCS.

Triclosan (TCS) is an antimicrobial and antimycotic agent widely used in personal care products. In aquatic environments, both TCS and its biomethylated more persistent form, methyl-triclosan (MeTCS), are usually detected in wastewater effluents and rivers, where are commonly adsorbed to suspended solids and sediments. The aim of this study was to evaluate biochemical and physiological effects in Danio rerio after a short term (2 days) and prolonged (21 days) exposures to sediment spiked with TCS acting as the source of the pollutant in the assay. The activities of catalase (CAT), glutathione-s transferase (GST) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), lipid peroxidation levels (LPO), total capacity against peroxyl radicals (ACAP), and acetylcholinesterase enzymatic activity (AChE) were measured in liver, gills, and brain. Most of TCS on the spiked sediment was biotransformed to MeTCS and promoted different adverse effects on D. rerio. Gills were the most sensitive organ after 2 day-exposure, showing lipid damage and increased SOD activity. After 21 days of exposure, liver was the most sensitive organ, showing lower ACAP, increased LPO levels, and SOD and CAT activities. This is the first study reporting the effects on biochemical markers in D. rerio from a MeTCS sink resulting from sediment spiked with TCS.

This paper presents the first acute toxicity data of the natural insecticide spinosad in amphibians. The sensitivity of two neotropical sympatric anuran species, Boana pulchella and Rhinella arenarum, to spinosad-based formulation Tracer™ was evaluated. Lethal effects are reported in tadpoles of B. pulchella stage 25 between 2.81 and 35.44 mg spinosad/L, while for the same concentration range no lethal effects were detected in tadpoles of R. arenarum of the same stage. In addition, Tracer™ produced sublethal effects at the individual level on the swimming activity, morphology (growth and presence of abnormalities), and development of B. pulchella from 2.81 to 5.78 mg spinosad/L, while in R. arenarum effects were only detected in the swimming activity and growth from 2.78 and 6.22 mg/L, respectively. At the biochemical level, Tracer™ produced inhibition of different enzymatic activities, among them, catalase activity at 2.81 mg spinosad/L, glutathione S- transferase activity from 2.81 to 2.98 mg spinosad/L, and acetylcholinesterase activity at 2.81 mg spinosad/L. These findings allow us to conclude that B. pulchella is more sensitive than R. arenarum to spinosad-based formulation Tracer™. The effects demonstrated here are not consistent with those expected since spinosad is supposed to be an environmental healthy alternative. This paper provides useful and necessary information to implement regulations on the use of new compounds entering the market and its associated risks.

A significant number of emerging pollutants resulting from point source and diffuse pollution are present in the aquatic environment. These are chemicals that are not commonly monitored, but have the potential to cause adverse effects on human and ecological health. One form of emerging pollutants, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), are becoming a serious problem in the discharge of domestic wastewater. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine their occurrence in wastewater and surface waters, and to evaluate the efficiency of subsurface horizontal flow constructed wetlands (planted in polyculture and unplanted), in removing two pharmaceuticals: carbamazepine (Cbz) and sildenafil (Sil); and a personal care product: methylparaben (Mp), present in domestic wastewater. The mixed PPCPs were added to wetlands, at nominal concentrations of 200 µg / L for each compound. The working flow of the reactors was 15 mL / min and the hydraulic retention time was three days. The physicochemical parameters evaluated were: organic load, dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity, redox potential, dissolved solids, pH and PPCPs concentration. The presence of the three compounds became evident in all sampled sites, with concentrations of up to 10.66 µg / L, 7.24 µg / L and 2.64 µg / L for Cbz, Mp and Sil, respectively. In planted wetlands, removal efficiencies of up to 97% were achieved for Sil, while in the unplanted these were 30% lower. Removal efficiencies greater than 97% were achieved for Mp, however, for Cbz they were less than 10%, evaluated in both treatments. The average removal efficiency for organic load was 95%. It was determined that constructed wetlands can efficiently remove simple molecular structure compounds such as Mp, and complex structures such as Sil. However, Cbz remained as a recalcitrant contaminant.

The large-scale use of the herbicide glyphosate leads to growing ecotoxicological and human health concerns. Microbe-assisted phytoremediation arises as a good option to remove, contain, or degrade glyphosate from soils and waterbodies, and thus avoid further spreading to non-target areas. To achieve this, availability of plant-colonizing, glyphosate-tolerant and -degrading strains is required and at the same time, it must be linked to plant-microorganism interaction studies focusing on a substantive ability to colonize the roots and degrade or transform the herbicide. In this work, we isolated bacteria from a chronically glyphosate-exposed site in Argentina, evaluated their glyphosate tolerance using the minimum inhibitory concentration assay, their in vitro degradation potential, their plant growth-promotion traits, and performed whole genome sequencing to gain insight into the application of a phytoremediation strategy to remediate glyphosate contaminated agronomic soils. Twenty-four soil and root-associated bacterial strains were isolated. Sixteen could grow using glyphosate as the sole source of phosphorous. As shown in MIC assay, some strains tolerated up to 10000 mg kg-1 of glyphosate. Most of them also demonstrated a diverse spectrum of in vitro plant growth-promotion traits, confirmed in their genome sequences. Two representative isolates were studied for their root colonization. An isolate of Ochrobactrum haematophilum exhibited different colonization patterns in the rhizoplane compared to an isolate of Rhizobium sp. Both strains were able to metabolize almost 50% of the original glyphosate concentration of 50 mg l-1 in 9 days. In a microcosms experiment with Lotus corniculatus L, O. haematophilum performed better than Rhizobium, with 97% of glyphosate transformed after 20 days. The results suggest that L. corniculatus in combination with to O. haematophilum can be adopted for phytoremediation of glyphosate on agricultural soils. An effective strategy is presented of linking the experimental data from the isolation of tolerant bacteria with performing plant-bacteria interaction tests to demonstrate positive effects on the removal of glyphosate from soils.

Dimethoate (D) are among the most commonly used organophosphates insecticides in the world. To evaluate the toxicity of two D formulations were selected as test organisms tadpoles of Rhinella arenarum. This toad species has an extensive neotropical distribution and is easy to handle and acclimate to laboratory conditions. The tadpoles were exposed in an acute assay for 48 h to D soluble concentrates (DSC) and emulsifiable concentrates (DEC). The 48 h-LC50 (95% confidence limits) value of DSC was 57.46 mg L-1 (40.52-81.43) and to DEC was 12.76 mg L-1 (10.39-15.68). These differences in toxicity were statistically significant (p < 0.05). In both formulations, acetylcholinesterase), carboxylesterase, and glutathione-S-transferases enzyme activities varied significantly respect to those of control group (p < 0.05). The DEC formulation was the most toxic. These results would allow the assessment and characterization of potential ecological risks following the application of those formulations.

Glyphosate-based herbicides are used in horticulture to prepare the soil for planting and to remove weeds surrounding greenhouses. Superficial runoff from production units can lead to glyphosate reaching nearby water bodies. Previous publications reported glyphosate's high affinity for suspended solids. The aim of the present work was to investigate the occurrence and concentrations of glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in soluble and suspended-particulate-matter fractions within the basin of the Carnaval-Stream, a water body traversing a horticultural greenbelt. Glyphosate and AMPA were detected in 67% and 83% of the samples, occurring in both fractions simultaneously at respective maximum concentrations of 17.0 and 4.5 µg.L1 in the soluble fraction and 35,620 and 19,586 µg.kg1 in the particulates. Although the calculated partition coefficients Kd confirmed that these compounds had tended to be associated with the particulate matter, the soluble glyphosate and AMPA contributed, on the average, to more than 90% of the total water volume. Although the analysis of suspended particulates is considered a more sensitive strategy for glyphosate and AMPA detection in surface water, these results demonstrate the need to analyze the soluble phase. The continual occurrence throughout a 3-year sampling was sufficient evidence demonstrating the use of glyphosate in horticulture.

We studied for the first time three ionophore anticoccidial drugs: monensin (MON), lasalocid (LAS), and salinomycin (SAL) as emerging pollutants originating from animal and plant husbandry in surface waters (n = 89) in one of the most extensive hydrological basins in South América (Del Plata basin). The soluble fraction of ionophores was pretreated by solid-phase extraction and analyzed by LC-MS/MS at a limit of detection of 1.7 ng·L-1. A statistical approach noted the need to report parameters calculated by methods based on the number of observations and the censorship percentage over substitution methods for more precise estimations of environmental data with a high percentage of left-censored data. Water collectors adjacent to intensive-husbandry facilities, placed in direct runoffs from animal excreta, or in wastewater emissions contained median concentrations of MON and SAL approximately 70 times higher than those found in regional tributaries and main courses of 5 sub-basins of the pampas and mesopotamic regions, thus exhibiting a relevance to other similar agricultural pollutants widely reported as pesticides. Chemical speciation of these compounds in surface water was characterized especially for MON and SAL, where the pH and chemical oxygen demand of the natural water body was associated with the concentration of the soluble fraction. The concentrations in abundant rivers such as the Gualeguay deliver a contribution to a natural wetland such as the Paraná-River delta, which registered only one sample with a [MON] ≤ the limit of quantification. Since wetlands possess a limited removal capability, these affluent contributions recorded strongly indicate that attention must be paid to the development of guidelines involving quality criteria for assessing the impact of ionophore antibiotics on such ecosystems.

In recent years there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of allergic diseases despite advances in the understanding of the pathogenesis, the dissemination of guidelines for its management and the emergence of new drugs. The reasons for this increase are not fully established, but it is suggested that multiple environmental factors may be involved. Inhaled air contains numerous harmful agents in addition to environmental allergens. The main immediate respiratory clinical expression after inhaling this contaminated air is asthma and rhinitis. The activity of human beings has altered the outdoor environment by the emission of multiple pollutants and has produced an increasing climate change. It also has a notable impact on the development of respiratory pathology and the modification of air quality. The bibliography on the subject of environmental control is very broad and sometimes difficult to interpret. In order to be able to make precise, valid and simple indications for patients to accomplish with, four scientific societies of the Argentine Republic that deal with this type of diseases, have elaborated a document that contains information of easy access to all medical personal involved in the treatment of patients with asthma and / or rhinitis, that provides practical measures for the patients and the different public health systems about unmet needs in this complex issue.


En los últimos años hubo un aumento significativo en la prevalencia de las enfermedades alérgicas pese a los avances en la comprensión de la patogénesis, la divulgación de guías para su control y tratamiento y la aparición de nuevos fármacos. La razón para este aumento no está totalmente establecida, pero se considera que múltiples factores ambientales podrían estar involucrados en ello. El aire inspirado contiene numerosos agentes nocivos además de alérgenos ambientales; el asma y la rinitis alérgica son las principales expresiones clínicas respiratorias inmediatas posteriores a su inhalación. En la antropósfera, el entorno de la superficie terrestre habitada por los humanos, se han alterado los equilibrios naturales por la emisión de múltiples sustancias y se ha producido un creciente cambio climático. Este fenómeno global influye en la calidad del aire y consecuentemente en el desarrollo de enfermedades respiratorias. Dado que la bibliografía sobre el tema del control ambiental es muy amplia, y en ocasiones difícil de interpretar para poder realizar indicaciones precisas, válidas y sencillas de cumplir por parte de los pacientes, cuatro sociedades científicas de la República Argentina, dedicadas a este tipo de enfermedades, elaboraron un documento con información de fácil acceso a todo profesional médico que trate asma y/o rinitis, que expone medidas prácticas para los enfermos y alerta a los distintos actores involucrados en la salud pública acerca de las necesidades insatisfechas en este tema tan complejo, a fin de poder elaborar una agenda para su posible resolución.

In recent years there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of allergic diseases despite advances in the understanding of the pathogenesis, the dissemination of guidelines for its management and the emergence of new drugs. The reasons for this increase are not fully established, but it is suggested that multiple environmental factors may be involved. Inhaled air contains numerous harmful agents in addition to environmental allergens. The main immediate respiratory clinical expression after inhaling this contaminated air is asthma and rhinitis. The activity of human beings has altered the outdoor environment by the emission of multiple pollutants and has produced an increasing climate change. It also has a notable impact on the development of respiratory pathology and the modification of air quality. Pharmaceutical products and their byproducts which are present in wastewater and superficial water are becoming an environmental problem. A large effort has been made to introduce new and more efficient treatment processes for removing these emerging pollutants. Among them, activated carbon is currently being studied to be implemented in wastewater treatment plants. In the present study the equilibrium and kinetics of the adsorption of carbamazepine (Cbz) and sildenafil citrate (Sil) onto powdered activated carbon are presented. Batch experiments were performed to assess the potential of this kind of activated carbon for removing these recalcitrant pharmaceuticals from aqueous systems. In addition, its adsorption efficiency was compared with the granular activated carbon. The isotherms of Langmuir, Freundlich, Langmuir-Freundlich and Redlich-Peterson were applied. Pseudo-first and pseudo-second order models, as well as a combined model and an intraparticle diffusion model were assayed on the results obtained. Linear and non-linear analyses were carried out to compare the best fitting isotherms and kinetics. The Langmuir isotherm was a good fit for the adsorption of Sil, whereas the Redlich-Peterson isotherm described the adsorption of Cbz. The experimental results for both pharmaceuticals follow a kinetic of pseudo first order. Comparative studies preparing the solutions with distilled water, dechlorinated water and wastewater were performed. No significant differences were observed in these studies. When initial concentrations similar to those found in surface waters for both pharmaceuticals were evaluated, removal efficiencies greater than 85% were obtained. Therefore, the use of this kind of activated carbon seems to be an efficient tool for the removal of recalcitrant emerging pollutants, such as Sil and Cbz.

The presence in the atmosphere of glyphosate (GLP) and atrazine (ATZ) was investigated-those pesticides dominating the market in Argentina-through rain, as the main climatic phenomenon associated with wet deposition, both through analyzing source-receptor relationships with soil along with the climatic influences that may condition that transport and through estimating the annual deposition on the surface of the Argentine pampas. Rainwater samples (n = 112) were collected throughout each rainfall in urban areas of the pampas having different degrees of land use and with extensive crop production plus subsurface-soil samples (n = 58) from the relevant periurban sites. The herbicides-analyzed by liquid-chromatography-mass-spectrometry-were detected in >80% of the rain samples at median-to-maximum concentrations of 1.24-67.3 µg·L-1 (GLP) and 0.22-26.9 µg·L-1(ATZ), while aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) was detected at 34% (0.75-7.91 µg·L-1). In soils, GLP was more frequently registered (41%; 102-323 µg·kg-1) followed by ATZ (32%; 7-66 µg·kg-1) and then AMPA (22%; 223-732 µg·kg-1). The maximum GLP concentrations quantified in rainwater exceeded the previously reported levels for the USA and Canada. No associations were observed between soil and rainwater concentrations in the same monitoring areas-despite the soil's action as a source, as evidenced through the AMPA present in rainwater. Median GLP concentrations were significantly associated with isohyets, in an increasing gradient from the east to the west-as such in an inverse pattern to that of the annual rainfall volumes; whereas ATZ-rainwater levels exhibited no characteristic spatial configuration. The estimated annual deposition of GLP by rainfall indicated that more than onc source of a herbicide can lead to its presence in the atmosphere and points out the relevance of rainfall's contribution to the surface levels of a pollutant.

In the last years, the agricultural expansion has led to an increased use of pesticides, with glyphosate as the most widely used worldwide. This is also the situation in Argentina, where glyphosate formulations are the most commercialized herbicides. It is known that glyphosate formulations are much more toxic than the active ingredient, and this difference in toxicity can be attributed to the adjuvants present in the formula. In this context, the aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare sub-lethal histological effects of the glyphosate formulation Roundup Ultramax and glyphosate active ingredient on Leptodactylus latrans tadpoles at Gosner-stage 36. Semi-static bioassays were performed using 96 h of exposure with Roundup Ultramax formulation (RU; 0.37-5.25 mg a.e./L), glyphosate (GLY; 3-300 mg/L), and a control group. RU exposure showed an increment in the melanomacrophagic cells (MMc) and melanomacrophagic centers (MMCs) from 0.37 mg a.e./L. GLY exposure showed a significant increment in the number of MMc from 15 mg/L, and of MMCs from 3 mg/L. Also, histopathological lesions were observed in the liver of tadpoles exposed to both, GLY and RU. These lesions included: lipidosis and hepatic congestion, but only RU showed significant differences respect to control, with a LOEC value of 2.22 mg a.e./L for both effects. In sum, this study represents the first evidence of adverse effects of glyphosate and RU formulation on the liver of anuran larvae at concentrations frequently found in the environment.

Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide worldwide. However, there are some uncertain aspects with respect to its environmental fate. To evaluate the existence and distribution of this pesticide and its metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), their presence in fresh water, sediment, and suspended particulate matter (SPM) was measured in samples collected in a river running across a large city and through areas with intensive and extensive agriculture. The aquatic risk associated to the occurrence of these compounds was estimated using the hazard quotient (HQ) calculation for water and sediment. From the analyzed samples, overall 35% contained glyphosate, AMPA, or both compounds. Concentrations of the analytes were spread in different percentages depending on the environmental matrices considered, with levels ranging from 12 to 20 times higher for glyphosate and AMPA in sediment and SPM, as compared with the levels found in water. The most polluted area was situated within a green belt zone of the city; while in second place were sites located in areas of extensive agriculture. Aquatic organisms inhabiting areas both inside and outside agricultural areas are threatened by water glyphosate concentrations. Benthic organisms inside the greenbelt zone and inside the lower basin are threatened by the concentrations of glyphosate in sediment. Even when the concentrations measured in water were below the levels of concern for wildlife, results showed the risk of agricultural practices to aquatic biota. An update of the limits established for freshwater biota protection is needed.
