RESUMO

Alcohol and drug use and abuse present serious problems for health care professionals, both as clinicians and abusers. These topics, however, have not been addressed adequately in nursing curricula. Nurses need to know the effects that alcohol and drug use and abuse have on individuals, families, and society. In this article, the authors outline the framework for a course or presentation that reviews the problems and applies the nursing process to the issues. The course can be adapted to meet the needs of nurses in any discipline, including the perioperative area, as well as for other health care providers and community groups. Course content and teaching strategies are included.

RESUMO

Perioperative nurses need to be aware of the multiple treatment modalities associated with chronic back problems. Patients who undergo back surgeries often have been and may continue to be pain therapy patients. In addition, many conditions other than back problems are treated in pain clinics. Perioperative nurses may be in a position to refer patients for pain therapy and are encouraged to do so. Patients may look to nurses for guidance when making decisions about using pain therapy clinics. Pain management programs vary from small single-discipline or modality clinics to large multidisciplinary centers. Regardless of the type of clinic, team members should place a strong emphasis on assessing patients' physical, mental, and psychosocial statuses so that coherent treatment plans can be developed. Patients should be encouraged to participate in all decision making because they have much of the responsibility for their treatment. Patients also should be cautioned not to expect miracles but to look for significant improvement and the opportunity to lead more effective and satisfying lives with minimal pain.

RESUMO

Nurses who are searching for new positions can enhance their job employment potential with well-written resumes. Scholarship and award recognition also can be improved by creating well-written resumes and/or curricula vitae. Appropriate cover letters effectively introduce nurses to employers or review committees. This article presents a few basic suggestions that can simplify the creation of any of these documents and help nurses produce a quality product.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of medication discharge planning for the elderly in relationship to readmission rates to the hospital. Registered nurses were surveyed regarding their practice of medication discharge planning. The study group consisted of 102 medical records for patients 65 years of age and over with congestive heart failure who had been discharged to their homes on one or more medications. A chi-square test showed a significant relationship existed between medication discharge planning and readmission. Patients who received instructions before discharge were less likely to be readmitted.
