RESUMO

A reaction of acyl chlorides derived from 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acids with piperazine allows the preparation of the corresponding 24-membered macrocycles in good yield. The structural and spectral properties of these new macrocyclic ligands were thoroughly investigated, revealing promising coordination properties towards f-elements (Am, Eu). It was shown that the prepared ligands can be used for selective extraction of Am(III) from alkaline-carbonate media in presence of Eu(III) with an SFAm/Eu up to 40. Their extraction efficiency is higher than calixarene-type extraction of the Am(III) and Eu(III) pair. Composition of macrocycle-metal complex with Eu(III) was investigated by luminescence and UV-vis spectroscopy. The possibility of such ligands to form complexes of L:Eu = 1:2 stoichiometry is revealed.

RESUMO

We report a novel reaction of the recently discovered family of fullerene derivatives C1-C60Ar5Th' with thiophene derivatives Th''H yielding a previously unknown family of C1-C60Ar5Th'Th''H compounds with three different types of functional aromatic addends attached to the carbon cage. The discovered reaction paves a way to the synthesis of novel C60 fullerene derivatives with promising antioxidant and antiviral properties.

RESUMO

High-temperature chlorination of conventional IPR C60 can produce chloro derivatives of non-IPR C60 by skeletal transformations via Stone-Wales rearrangements (SWRs) of the carbon cage. We report the synthesis and structure elucidation of non-IPR 1809C60Cl8 and nonclassical C60(NC)Cl14. The present isolation of 1809C60Cl8 hints at the possibility that the same product in the previously reported chlorine-doped arc-discharge synthesis could have, likewise, resulted from the initially formed IPR C60. C60(NC)Cl14 is the first chloride containing a nonclassical carbon cage with one heptagon and 13 pentagons known previously only in a CF3 derivative. Additionally, trifluoromethylation of non-IPR chlorides revealed the formation of 1806C60(CF3)14 with a new non-IPR carbon cage and unusual trifluoromethylation pattern. Thereby, the number of different, structurally confirmed non-IPR carbon cages of C60 now reaches eight.

RESUMO

Here we report a reaction of the fullerene derivatives C60Ar5Cl, which enables the substitution of Cl with thiophene residues and the formation of the novel family of C1-symmetrical C60 fullerene derivatives with six functional addends C60Ar5Th. The discovered reaction provided a straightforward approach to the synthesis of previously inaccessible multifunctional water-soluble fullerene derivatives, including the compounds with antiviral activity against human immunodeficiency and influenza viruses.

The carbon cage of buckminsterfullerene Ih-C60, obeying the Isolated-Pentagon Rule (IPR), can be transformed to the non-IPR C2v-1809C60 cage by a single Stone-Wales rearrangement (SWR) in the course of high-temperature chlorination of C60 with SbCl5. The following high-temperature trifluoromethylation of the chlorination products with CF3I afforded non-IPR CF3 derivatives, 1809C60(CF3)n. X-ray diffraction studies of 1809C60(CF3)n (n = 10, 12, 14, 16) revealed that the sites of pentagon-pentagon fusions on the carbon cage are preferentially occupied by CF3 groups. The addition patterns of 1809C60(CF3)n and related 1809C60Cln are compared, demonstrating a prevailing role of pentagon-pentagon fusions in the stability and structural chemistry of these compounds. Further SWR skeletal transformations of 1809C60 are discussed and compared with the experimental data available.

A number of new nido-carboranyl amidines 10-R(CH2)nNHC(Et)[double bond, length as m-dash]HN-7,8-C2B9H11 (n = 2, R = OH, OMe, and NMe2; n = 3, R = OH) were synthesized by the nucleophilic addition of amino alcohols and N,N-dimethylethylenediamine to the highly activated -C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N+- triple bond of the 10-propionitrilium derivative of nido-carborane. A similar reaction of 10-EtC[triple bond, length as m-dash]N-7,8-C2B9H11 with ethylenediamine unexpectedly resulted in the cleavage of the C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N bond to form the ammonium derivative 10-H3N-7,8-C2B9H11. The complexation of the synthesized carboranyl amidines 10-MeO(CH2)2NHC(Et)[double bond, length as m-dash]HN-7,8-C2B9H11 and 10-Me2N(CH2)2NHC(Et)[double bond, length as m-dash]HN-7,8-C2B9H11 with nickel and palladium phosphine complexes [(Ph3P)2MCl2] (M = Ni, Pd) was studied. The reactions with 10-MeO(CH2)2NHC(Et)[double bond, length as m-dash]HN-7,8-C2B9H11 result in half-sandwiched metallacarborane complexes with the retention of one triphenylphosphine ligand [3-Ph3P-3-(8-MeOCH2CH2N[double bond, length as m-dash]C(Et)NH)-3,1,2-MC2B9H10], while the reactions with 10-Me2N(CH2)2NHC(Et)[double bond, length as m-dash]HN-7,8-C2B9H11 proceed with the complete loss of the phosphine ligands and lead to the formation of complexes with the η5:κ2(N,N')-coordinated carboranyl amidine ligand [3,3-(8-Me2NCH2CH2N[double bond, length as m-dash]C(Et)NH)-3,1,2-MC2B9H10]. The crystal molecular structures of the synthesized complexes were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction.

The equilibrium molecular structure of the gaseous fluorofullerene C60F36 has been determined for the first time by the electron diffraction method with the use of quantum chemical calculations up to the RI-MP2/def2-TZVPP level of theory. Vibrational amplitudes and quadratic and cubic force constants were calculated by density functional theory methods. It was found that the sample under study consists of the isomer of C1 symmetry, 81(4)%, with a small amount of the isomer of C3 symmetry, in good accordance with HPLC-MS (atmospheric pressure photoionization), HPLC-UV/vis, and NMR spectroscopic data. The presence of the isomer of T symmetry, up to 5%, cannot be completely excluded. Theoretical structural parameters of the C60F36 molecule were compared with those of the C60F48 molecule. Relative to C60, the C60F36 molecule has a remarkably distorted carbon cage because of steric, electrostatic, and orbital interactions. This results in the longest carbon-carbon bond (1.671 Å) found in free molecules. In particular, about the longest FC-CF bond, the dihedral angle is only around 20°, which leads to the very short nonbonded distance between electronegative vicinal fluorine atoms (2.531 Å) that is much shorter than the sum of van der Waals radii of fluorine atoms (2.94 Å). A natural bond orbital analysis revealed that strong nπ(F) → σ*(FC-CF) interactions delocalize the lone pair of π-type at the fluorine atoms into the antibonding orbital of the FC-CF bond. This hyperconjugation results in additional elongation of FC-CF bonds.

The isolated-pentagon-rule (IPR) D5h-C70 fullerene is least susceptible to skeletal transformations in comparison with higher fullerenes and even C60. A cage transformation in IPR C70 via a one-step Stone-Wales rearrangement was accomplished by high-temperature (440 °C) ampule chlorination with SbCl5. Subsequent dechlorination at 450 °C, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography separation, allowed the isolation of non-IPR C70Cl6 and C70Cl8. X-ray diffraction study revealed the presence of an unprecedented C70 carbon cage, possessing two pairs of fused pentagons and the chlorination patterns located on one cage hemisphere. A high energetic and thermal stability of both non-IPR chlorides was also confirmed by theoretical calculations of formation energies. Pathways of skeletal transformations of IPR C70 in comparison with those in C60 are discussed.

Alkylation of homofullerene [6,6]-C60 (CF2 )2- dianion with the set of alkyl halides, RX, was established to demonstrate an effect of RX nature on the conversion, product composition, and regioselectivity. The respective C60 (CF2 )RH, C60 (CF2 )R2 and C60 (CF2 )R'R'' compounds were obtained in the reaction with sterically unhindered RX, isolated by HPLC and unequivocally characterized. The kinetic studies evidenced SN 2 mechanism for both alkylation steps, yielding mono- and dialkylated C60 (CF2 ), respectively, and indicated the negative charge localization at the bridgehead carbon atoms as well as a steric hindrance of the CF2 moiety likely to be a key factors for the SN 2 reaction mechanism and observed regioselectivity. The significant difference in the rate constants of the first and the second steps is attributed to the different activation barriers predicted by DFT calculations which makes possible to develop synthetic methods for the regioselective preparation of monoalkylated C60 (CF2 )RH and heterodialkylated C60 (CF2 )R'R'' derivatives.

2,3,6,7,10,11-Hexabromotriphenylene (HBTP) and 2,3,6,7,10-pentabromotriphenylene (PBTP) were investigated by means of dissociative electron attachment spectroscopy (DEAS). The dominant decay channel of the transient molecular negative ions consists of elimination of Br- with resonances in the low electron energy region. Formation of long-lived parent anions with autodetachment lifetime τa = 310 µs is observed at thermal electron energies. The adiabatic electron affinities, EAa = 1.12 ± 0.1 eV in HBTP and 1.09 ± 0.1 eV in PBTP, evaluated using a simple Arrhenius approach are in good agreement with those predicted by DFT (XYG3/Def2-TZVPP//PBE0/Def2-TZVPP) calculations.

In recent years, many higher fullerenes that obey the isolated pentagon rule (IPR) were found capable of rearranging into molecules with adjacent pentagons and even with heptagons via chlorination-promoted skeletal transformations. However, the key fullerene, buckminsterfullerene I h-C60, long seemed insusceptible to such rearrangements. Now we demonstrate that buckminsterfullerene yet can be transformed by chlorination with SbCl5 at 420-440 °C and report X-ray structures for the thus-obtained library of non-IPR derivatives. The most remarkable of them are non-IPR C60Cl24 and C60Cl20 with fundamentally rearranged carbon skeletons featuring, respectively, four and five fused pentagon pairs (FPPs). Further high-temperature trifluoromethylation of the chlorinated mixture afforded additional non-IPR derivatives C60(CF3)10 and C60(CF3)14, both with two FPPs, and a nonclassical C60(CF3)15F with a heptagon, two FPPs, and a fully fused pentagon triple. We discuss the general features of the addition patterns in the new non-IPR compounds and probable pathways of their formation via successive Stone-Wales rearrangements.

RESUMO

High-temperature chlorination of an Isolated-Pentagon Rule (IPR) D2-C76 fullerene followed by high-temperature trifluoromethylation of non-IPR C76 chlorides with CF3I unexpectedly resulted in a series of non-IPR C76(CF3)nFm compounds. X-ray diffraction study with the use of synchrotron radiation revealed the mixed CF3/F structures of non-classical, non-IPR C76(CF3)14, C76(CF3)14F2, and C76(CF3)16F6.

We survey the structure and electronic properties of the family of higher trifluoromethylated C70 (CF3 )n molecules with n=14, 16, 18, and 20. Twenty-two available compounds, of which thirteen are newly obtained and characterized, demonstrate the broad diversity of π-system topologies, which enabled us to study the interplay between the CF3 addition pattern and the electronic properties. UV/Vis spectroscopic and cyclic voltammetric studies demonstrate the importance of the exact addition pattern rather than the plain number of addends. Of particular interest is the skew pentagonal pyramid (SPP) addition pattern, which enables formation of closed-shell cyclopentadienyl anions C70 (CF3 )n-1- through CF3 detachment upon electron transfer. A detailed study of the process is presented for a SPP-C70 (CF3 )16 where potentiostatic electrolysis at the second reduction potential gives C70 (CF3 )15- oxidizable to a persistent C70 (CF3 )15. radical. Together with the literature data for the lower C70 (CF3 )n compounds with n=2-12, the present results show good correlation between the experimental boundary level positions and the DFT predictions. The compounds turn out to be electron acceptor molecular semiconductors with experimental LUMO energies and HOMO-LUMO gaps within the ranges of -4.3 to -3.7 eV and 1.6 to 3.3 eV, respectively, depending on the shape of the conjugated fragments. The HOMO levels fall within the range of -5.6 to -6.9 eV and show linear correlation with the number of addends.

The evaporation of a dicationic ionic liquid, 1,3-bis(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)propane bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide ([C3(MIm)22+][Tf2N-]2), was studied by Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry. Its evaporation is accompanied by a partial thermal decomposition producing monocationic ionic liquids, 1,3-dimethylimidazolium and 1-(2-propenyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amides, as volatile products. This decomposition does not affect the vaporization characteristics of [C3(MIm)22+][Tf2N-]2, which were established to be as follows. The vaporization enthalpy (550 K) is equal to (155.5 ± 3.2) kJ·mol-1; the saturated vapor pressure is described by the equation ln( p/Pa) = -(18699 ± 381)/( T/K) + (30.21 ± 0.82) in the range of 508-583 K. 1,3-Bis(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)propane bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide is the first dicationic ionic liquid, the vaporization characteristics of which were determined with an acceptable accuracy.

A series of novel highly soluble double-caged [60]fullerene derivatives were prepared by means of lithium-salt-assisted [2+3] cycloaddition. The bispheric molecules feature rigid linking of the fullerene spheres through a four-membered cycle and a pyrrolizidine bridge with an ester function CO2 R (R=n-decyl, n-octadecyl, benzyl, and n-butyl; compounds 1 a-d, respectively), as demonstrated by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Cyclic voltammetry studies revealed three closely overlapping pairs of reversible peaks owing to consecutive one-electron reductions of fullerene cages, as well as an irreversible oxidation peak attributed to abstraction of an electron from the nitrogen lone-electron pair. Owing to charge delocalization over both carbon cages, compounds 1 a-d are characterized by upshifted energies of frontier molecular orbitals, a narrowed bandgap, and reduced electron-transfer reorganization energy relative to pristine C60 . Neat thin films of the n-decyl compound 1 a demonstrated electron mobility of (1.3±0.4)×10-3  cm2 V-1 s-1 , which was comparable to phenyl-C61 -butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and thus potentially advantageous for organic solar cells (OSC). Application of 1 in OSC allowed a twofold increase in the power conversion efficiencies of as-cast poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT)/1 devices relative to the as-cast P3HT/PCBM ones. This is attributed to the good solubility of 1 and their enhanced charge-transport properties - both intramolecular, owing to tightly linked fullerene cages, and intermolecular, owing to the large number of close contacts between the neighboring double-caged molecules. Test P3HT/1 OSCs demonstrated power-conversion efficiencies up to 2.6 % (1 a). Surprisingly low optimal content of double-caged fullerene acceptor 1 in the photoactive layer (≈30 wt %) favored better light harvesting and carrier transport owing to the greater content of P3HT and its higher degree of crystallinity.

High-temperature chlorination of HPLC fullerene fractions containing mainly C92 /C94 and C102 /C104 resulted in the isolation and X-ray structural characterization of chloro derivatives of azafullerenes, C59 NCl5 and C97 NCl21 . It was assumed that formation of azafullerenes in the arc-discharge synthesis of fullerenes occurred due to air leakage into the reactor. The molecule of C59 NCl5 contains an isolated aromatic pyrrole ring on the fullerene cage and possesses C5v symmetrical shape typical of other known C59 NR5 derivatives. The molecule of non-classical (NC) C97 N(NC)Cl21 contains an NC6 heptagon on the azafullerene cage that assumes its formation by a C2 loss from C99 N in the course of chlorination. The chlorination pattern is characterized by the presence of stabilizing isolated aromatic systems and isolated double C=C bonds on the C97 N(NC) azafullerene cage.

Solution phase photochemical reaction of fullerene with perfluorinated alkyldiiodides I-RF-I can be efficiently initiated by visible range irradiation that targets solely the fullerene component. Photoinduced electron transfer from fullerene onto the diiodide component effects dissociative formation of alkyl radicals RFI• subsequently consumed by C60 to give the principal detectable radical intermediate C60RFI•. Experimentally established second-order kinetics with respect to the fullerene concentration evidence that fullerene plays its two roles of photocatalyst and reactant in a decoupled fashion, which suggests its catalytic ability to be of potential use in more complex photochemical systems. The main final product of the photochemical transformation observed is the singly linked dimer of the intermediates, I-RF-C60-C60-RF-I. Side reactions of C60RFI• with the environment lead to quenching of the unpaired electron density by ortho- or para- attachment of hydrogen or iodine. The outlined kinetic findings are discussed in detail.

The homofullerene compound cis-2-C60 (CF2 )2 , which has an unusual kind of open/closed valence tautomerism undergoes consecutive regioselective hydrogenation at bridgehead carbon atoms upon reduction with Zn/Cu couple in H2 O-toluene mixture. The tautomerism barrier in cis-2-C60 (CF2 )2 is negligible in the neutral state, whereas negative charging both impedes tautomeric transformation and promotes regioselective addition of electrophilic species at the bridgehead carbon atoms. In light of this observation, two novel homofullerene derivatives, mixed [6,6]-open/closed C60 (CF2 )2 H2 and [6,6]-open cis-2-C60 (CF2 )2 H4 , were synthesized and their structures were unambiguously determined by means of single crystal X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy.

CF3 -derivatized fullerenes prove once again to be promising scaffolds for regioselective fullerene functionalization: now with the smallest possible addends-hydrogen atoms. Hydrogenation of Cs -C70 (CF3 )8 and C1 -C70 (CF3 )10 by means of reduction with Zn/Cu couple in the presence of water proceeds regioselectively, yielding only one major isomer of C70 (CF3 )8 H2 and only two for C70 (CF3 )10 H2 , whose addition patterns are combined in the only abundant isomer of C70 (CF3 )10 H4 . The observed selectivity is governed by the electronic structure of trifluoromethylated substrates. Interestingly, we discovered that Clar's theory can be utilized to predict the regiochemistry of functionalization, and we look forward to testing it on forthcoming cases of derivatization of pre-functionalized fullerene building blocks.

RATIONALE: Ionic liquids ([Cat(+)][An(-)]) were believed to decompose before reaching vaporization temperatures, but recently some of them have been shown to vaporize congruently. Low-temperature vaporization of ionic substances is an intriguing phenomenon, so the vapor-phase composition and reactions of ionic liquids deserve more extensive study. METHODS: Evaporation of two ionic liquids, [C2MIM(+)][Tf2 N(-)] and [C3MMIM(+)][Tf2N(-)], was studied by means of Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry. These liquids were also characterized using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry, UV/Vis, IR, NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. RESULTS: The vaporization enthalpies of (118 ± 3) and (124 ± 2) kJ·mol(-1) were determined for [C2MIM(+)][Tf2N(-)] and [C3MMIM(+)][Tf2N(-)], respectively. The corresponding equations for their saturated vapor pressures are: ln(p{[C2MIM(+)][Tf2N(-)]}/Pa) = -(14213 ± 325)/(T/K) + (26.57 ± 1.04), ln(p{[C2MMIM(+)][Tf2N(-)]}/Pa) = -(14868 ± 221)/(T/K) + (27.19 ± 0.60). The MALDI studies (positive and negative ion modes) enabled detection of monomeric [Cat(+)] and [An(-)] ions, the cluster ions {[Cat(+)]2 [An(-)]}(+) and {[Cat(+)][An(-)]2}(-), and some complex anions {2[An(-)] + Na(+)}(-), {2[An(-)] + K(+)}(-), {2[An(-)] + Cu(+)}(-) and {3[An(-)] + Ca(2+)}(-). CONCLUSIONS: Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry proved to be a valuable method to study the thermodynamics of ionic liquids. The saturated vapor pressure and vaporization enthalpy of [C3MMIM(+)][Tf2N(-)] were accurately determined for the first time. MALDI is also capable of providing indirect information on hydrogen bonding.
