RESUMO

In 23 endogenous depressives, 24 schizophrenics, 15 manics, 23 depressed neurotics, 23 nondepressed neurotics and 29 nonpsychiatric patients as controls, the plasma cortisol in the morning (7:30 a.m.) and the evening (7:30 p.m.) was measured with radioimmunoassay. Comparing the means of the groups, significant differences were found. In the morning the means of the nondepressed neurotics (-x = 16.6 microgram/100 ml), the endogenous depressives (-x = 14.8 microgram/100 ml), and the depressed neurotics (-x = 14.4 microgram/100 ml) are greater than that of the controls (-x = 10.0 microgram/100 ml). In the evening the means of the nondepressed neurotics (-x = 8.8 microgram/100 ml), the manics (-x = 6.4 microgram/100 ml), and the endogenous depressives (-x = 7.0 microgram/100 ml) are greater than that of the controls (-x = 3.6 microgram/100 ml); also, the mean of the nondepressed neurotics (-x = 8.8 microgram/100 ml) is greater than those of the depressped neurotics (-x = 4.9 microgram/100 ml) and the schizophrenics (-x = 4.4 microgram/100 ml). The results are compared with the literature. The interpretation of the findings is problematic: probably unspecific factors of stress and specific factors of illness--at least in depressive illness of the endogenomorphic type--are relevant.

RESUMO

1. The secretion of prolactin and growth-hormone (hGH) was investigated during sleep in 10 healthy volunteers (8 males and 2 females): The comparison of one baseline night, one night after daytime physical exercise, and one night with selective deprivation of sleep stages 3 and 4 and paradoxical sleep showed clear differences of prolactin and hGH secretion during sleep. 2. Prolactin secretion is entrained into the sleep cycle of Non-REM and REM periods. A maximum of plasma hormone elevations occurs during the first quarter of sleep cycles, i.e., during Non-REM periods and less frequent rises at the end of the cycles, mainly during REM periods. 3. In contrast to growth hormone, concentrations of prolactin remain high also during later cycles occurring toward morning. This shows that high prolactin, but not high concentrations of hGH, regularly occur during sleep cycles with small amounts of slow-wave sleep. 4. Maximal prolactin concentrations during sleep are affected neither by preceding daytime physical exercise nor by selective deprivation of slow sleep stages 3 and 4. This is further evidence that slow-wave sleep stages are not necessary for the development of high plasma prolactin concentrations. However, peak values of growth hormone in the first and second cycle are significantly diminished after selective deprivation of sleep stages 3 and 4. 5. In abnormally long sleep cycles with artificial delay of the first REM period, the cyclical rhythmicity of prolactin release seems disturbed. This is further evidence for the sleep-dependent rhythmicity in the secretion of this hormone.

RESUMO

At a female patient suffering from multiple sclerosis with demyelinisation mainly in the pontine and mesencephalic tegmentum, the five early potentials consisting of the compound action potential of the acoustic nerve (Pot. I) and the four brainstem potentials (Pot. II-V) as well as the slow evoked vertex-potential were registered. The threshold behaviour, the characteristic curve and the latency curve of all potentials were obtained, and thereby damages of the central acoustic pathways found out. A topodiagnostic is tried by means of the alterations of the peripheral and central ERA, and by means of the informations described in the literature. A control registration, carried out four weeks later, demonstrated an improvement of the diagnosis.
