Natural killer/T cell lymphomas chiefly involving the midline facial structures including the nasal cavity or nasopharyns are a relatively rare type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Apart from the upper respiratory tract, the disease occasionally presents in certain extranodal sites, such as the central nervous system, skin, gastrointestinal tract, or testes. We report a case of natural killer NK/T cell lymphoma as a testicular tumor in a 36-year-old man with a history of progressive swelling of his right testicle. Histologically, the testicular mass showed a diffuse infiltrate of medium-sized and atypical large lymphoid cells with angiocentric infiltration and areas of coagulative necrosis. Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated tumor cells staining positively with CD3, TIA-1, and Granzyme B. The Epstein-Barr virus genoma was detected by in situ hybridization. There were no abnormal findings in the nasal and nasopharyngeal regions. Classified as stage IEA, the patient received involved-field irradiation to contralateral testis (45 Gy), followed by systemic chemotherapy with a combination regimen ofL-asparaginase, methotrexate and dexamethasone. Relevant literature is reviewed, and the clinicopathologic features, natural history, and treatment options for primary testicular NK/T cell lymphoma are discussed.

En el beneficiado del cacao se producen una gran cantidad de residuos, las mazorcas generalmente son desechadas dentro de los mismos cultivos y genera problemáticas como la proliferación de insectos y microorganismos patógenos. De estos desechos las cáscaras son las de mayor relevancia. La Escuela de Ingeniería Química de ITCA-FEPADE evaluó añadirle valor a este subproducto, incorporando desechos de cáscara de cacao en la formulación de un sustrato para el cultivo de plántulas de hortalizas. El objetivo de esta investigación fue obtener un sustrato orgánico que sirva de soporte material y nutritivo a partir de cáscaras de cacao criollo. La biomasa vegetal se caracterizó teniendo en cuenta parámetros como el porcentaje de humedad, pH, porcentaje de cenizas, contenido de potasio, nitrógeno y fósforo. Se ejecutaron pruebas comparativas de formulación del sustrato, siembra, cultivo y crecimiento de las plántulas de hortalizas de tomate y pepino, obteniendo como resultado la fórmula óptima de un sustrato y abono orgánico y el mejor medio de desarrollo. De los resultados obtenidos se concluye que, a partir de un adecuado procesamiento y aprovechamiento de las cáscaras de cacao, se puede transformar este desecho en un producto biomaterial alternativo que genera una opción de bioprospección agroindustrial. Los valores obtenidos en la caracterización fisicoquímica de las cáscaras de las mazorcas, dependen de condiciones como el tipo de suelo, variables agrometeorológicas, calidad de agua, abono y especie de la planta de cacao. El escenario de siembra condiciona el desarrollo óptimo de las plántulas; los factores como requerimiento de agua, distribución de nutrientes y estabilidad de las plántulas, se ven afectados por la relación del espacio de germinación. Como resultado de la caracterización fisicoquímica, se obtuvo: pH de 5.7, cenizas 18.83%, humedad 73.56%, celulosa 21.39%, lignina 39.81%, nitrógeno total 0.02%, fósforo total 0.02% y ausencia de potasio.

The vegetal biomass was characterized taking into account parameters such as moisture percentage, pH, ash percentage, potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus content. Subsequently, comparative tests of formulation, planting and growth of vegetable tomato and cucumber seedlings were carry out, obtaining as result, the optimal formula for the substrate and the best development environment. It concludes that, through an adequate processing and use of the cacao shell, it is possible to transform a waste into an alternative biomaterial product that generates an agro industrial bioprospecting option. The values obtained in the physicochemical characterization of the shells of cacao pods depend on conditions such as soil type, agrometeorological variables, water quality, fertilizer and cacao plant species. The planting environment determines the optimal development of the seedlings, factors such as water requirement, nutrient distribution and seedling stability seems affected because relation of the germination space. The results of the characterization were a pH of 5.7, ashes 18.83%, humidity 73.56%, cellulose 21.39%, lignin 39.81%, total nitrogen 0.02%, total phosphorus 0.02%, and total phosphorus 0.02% and an absence of potassium.

Abstract The task of determining for which elements of a random field (e.g., pixels in an image) a certain null hypothesis may be rejected is a relevant problem in several scientific areas. In the current contribution, we introduce a new method for performing this task, the regularized hypothesis testing (RHT) method, focusing on its use in neuroimaging research. RHT is based on the formulation of the hypothesis testing task as a Bayesian estimation problem, with the previous application of a Markovian random field. The latter allows for the incorporation of local spatial information and considers different noise models, including spatially correlated noise. In tests on synthetic data showing regular activation levels on uncorrelated noise fields, RHT furnished a true positive rate (TPR) of 0.97, overcoming the state-of-the-art morphology-based hypothesis testing (MBHT) method and the traditional family-wise error rate (FWER) method, which afforded 0.93 and 0.58, respectively. For fields with highly correlated noise, the TPR provided by RHT was 0.65, and by MBHT and FWER was 0.35 and 0.29, respectively. For tests utilizing real functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, RHT managed to locate the activation regions when 60% of the original signal were removed, while MBHT located only one region and FWER located none.


Resumen En varias áreas científicas aparece el problema de determinar los elementos de un campo aleatorio (por ejemplo, píxeles en una imagen) en los que se puede rechazar una cierta hipótesis nula. En este artículo presentamos un nuevo método para realizar esta tarea, centrado en aplicaciones para investigación de neuroimagen. Nuestra propuesta se basa en la formulación de pruebas de hipótesis como un problema de estimación Bayesiana, usando como a priori un campo aleatorio Markoviano, que permite incorporar información espacial local y considera diferentes modelos de ruido, incluido el ruido correlacionado espacialmente. Para pruebas en datos sintéticos con niveles de activación regulares sobre campos de ruido no correlacionado, nuestro método obtiene una tasa de verdaderos positivos (TPR) de 0.97, superando al método del estado del arte MBHT y al método de control FWER que obtienen 0.93 y 0.58 respectivamente; para campos con ruido altamente correlacionado, nuestro método obtiene un TPR de 0.65, mientras que MBHT y FWER obtienen 0.35 y 0.29 respectivamente. Para pruebas con datos reales de fMRI, nuestro método localiza las regiones de activación cuando removemos 60% de la señal original, mientras que MBHT no localiza región alguna y FWER localiza una de las dos regiones.

Steam reforming chemical looping (CL-SMR) using mixed iron oxides has the potential as an alternative to the current partial oxidation (POX) and steam reforming (SMR) processes. In this study, the use of FeMoO4, Fe2ZnO4 and Fe2MnO4 as oxygen carriers (OC) under the CL-SMR reaction scheme was proposed to overcome the current disadvantages of methane POX and SMR processes. This research is aimed at finding potential iron-based metal oxides for the production of syngas, which can be regenerated under favorable conditions in steam, while producing H2. Thermodynamic evaluation and process simulation of the CL-SMR reaction scheme using mixed iron-oxides was performed. Results indicate that FeMoO4, Fe2ZnO4 and Fe2MnO4 generated syngas at 750 °C, 730 °C and 600 °C, respectively. However, FeMoO4 was not fully regenerated under favorable conditions, whereas Fe2ZnO4 and Fe2MnO4 were completely regenerated at 440 °C and 640 °C, respectively. Fe2MnO4 showed the most favorable operating conditions among the studied OC towards the production of syngas. Preliminary experimental studies involved the synthesis of Fe2MnO4 through a solid-state method using Fe2O3 and MnO as precursors, which was characterized via XRD, while its redox performance was evaluated in a TGA CH4-H2O redox cycle, with reduction using CH4 followed by the steam oxidation of OC. Results indicate that both reduction with methane and oxidation with water vapor using Fe2MnO4 present reasonable reduction-oxidation rates to be used in the CL-SMR reaction scheme, verifying the feasibility of the theoretical study performed in the present investigation.

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) is widely used to infer microstructural characteristics of tissue, particularly in cerebral white matter. Histological validation of the metrics derived from dMRI methods are needed to fully characterize their ability to capture biologically-relevant histological features non-invasively. The data described here were used to correlate metrics derived from dMRI and quantitative histology in an animal model of axonal degeneration ("Histological validation of per-bundle water diffusion metrics within a region of fiber crossing following axonal degeneration" [1]). Unilateral retinal ischemia/reperfusion was induced in 10 rats, by the elevation of pressure of the anterior chamber of the eye for 90 min. Five rats were used as controls. After five weeks, injured animals were intracardially perfused to analyze the optic nerves and chiasm with dMRI and histology. This resulted in 15 brain scans, each with 80 diffusion-sensitizing gradient directions with b = 2000 and 2500 s/mm2 and 20 non-diffusion-weighted images (b = 0 s/mm2), with isometric voxel resolution of 125 µm3. Histological sections were obtained after dMRI. Optical microscopy photomicrographs of the optic nerves (stained with toluidine blue) are available, as well as their corresponding automatic segmentations of axons and myelin.

Micro-architectural characteristics of white matter can be inferred through analysis of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI). The diffusion-dependent signal can be analyzed through several methods, with the tensor model being the most frequently used due to its straightforward interpretation and low requirements for acquisition parameters. While valuable information can be gained from the tensor-derived metrics in regions of homogeneous tissue organization, this model does not provide reliable microstructural information at crossing fiber regions, which are pervasive throughout human white matter. Several multiple fiber models have been proposed that seem to overcome the limitations of the tensor, with few providing per-bundle dMRI-derived metrics. However, biological interpretations of such metrics are limited by the lack of histological confirmation. To this end, we developed a straightforward biological validation framework. Unilateral retinal ischemia was induced in ten rats, which resulted in axonal (Wallerian) degeneration of the corresponding optic nerve, while the contralateral was left intact; the intact and injured axonal populations meet at the optic chiasm as they cross the midline, generating a fiber crossing region in which each population has different diffusion properties. Five rats served as controls. High-resolution ex vivo dMRI was acquired five weeks after experimental procedures. We correlated and compared histology to per-bundle descriptors derived from three methodologies for dMRI analysis (constrained spherical deconvolution and two multi-tensor representations). We found a tight correlation between axonal density (as evaluated through automatic segmentation of histological sections) with per-bundle apparent fiber density and fractional anisotropy (derived from dMRI). The multi-fiber methods explored were able to correctly identify the damaged fiber populations in a region of fiber crossings (chiasm). Our results provide validation of metrics that bring substantial and clinically useful information about white-matter tissue at crossing fiber regions. Our proposed framework is useful to validate other current and future dMRI methods.

A stable, accurate and robust-to-noise method for the estimation of the intra-voxel bundle-wise diffusion properties for diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging is presented. The proposed method overcomes some of the limitations of most of the multi-fiber algorithms in the literature and extends them to estimate the diffusion profiles, improving the estimation of the intra-voxel geometry at challenging microstructure configurations, that is to say: relatively small crossing angles, different voxel-wise anisotropic diffusion profiles and low SNR. The proposed methodology is based on four key novel ideas: (i) A Multi-Resolution Discrete-Search determines the orientation of the fiber bundles accurately and naturally constrains the sparsity on the recovered solutions; (ii) the determination of the number of fiber bundles using the F-test combined with a Rician bias correction; (iii) a Simultaneous Denoising and Fitting procedure that exploits the spatial redundancy of the axon bundles to achieve robustness with respect to noise; and (iv) a general framework for the estimation of the axial and radial diffusivity parameters independently for each voxel. A new useful evaluation metric is also proposed, which combines the information of the success rate in the estimated number of bundles and the angular error, avoiding in this way, some of the limitations these metrics have individually. A novel methodology for the evaluation of the methods on in-vivo data is also proposed. This work presents an extensive evaluation: the proposed methodology has been tested on state-of-the-art biophysical synthetic data for a variety of conditions, on the challenging spatially coherent phantom used on the HARDI reconstruction Challenge 2012, and on the recently released in-vivo MASSIVE data-set. Our results present significant improvements on the estimation of the number and orientation of the fiber bundles over the Spherical Deconvolution algorithm for multi-shell data, which is one of the most widely used multi-fiber algorithm. The results also show that, by the voxel-wise estimation of the diffusion profiles, the axial and radial diffusivity parameters are robustly estimated, being this essential for a better understanding of the individual bundle diffusion properties at challenging structural configurations.

The sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) is an electroencephalographic rhythm associated with motor and cognitive development observed in the central brain regions during wakefulness in the absence of movement, and it reacts contralaterally to generalized and hemibody movements. The purpose of this work was to characterize the SMR of 4-month-old infants, born either healthy at term or prematurely with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). Two groups of infants were formed: healthy and premature with PVL. Their electroencephalograms (EEGs) were recorded in four conditions: rest, free movement, right-hand grasping and left-hand grasping, in order to explore general reactivity to free movement and contralateral reactivity in hand-grasping conditions. Associations between SMR, and cognitive and motor performance were analyzed. The healthy infants showed a SMR between 5.47 and 7.03 Hz, with clear contralateral reactivity to free movement and right-hand grasping. However, the premature infants with PVL did not show enough electroencephalographic characteristics to evidence the presence of SMR. Poor performance, characteristic of children with PVL, was related to low-frequency SMR, while good performance was associated with a higher frequency rhythm in the left hemisphere. The presence of SMR in the group of healthy infants could be considered a sign of health at this age. Thus, poor SMR evidence in the EEG of infants with PVL is probably a sign of brain immaturity or brain dysfunction. Our results provide data on infant SMR development that is needed to design neurofeedback protocols for infants with PVL.

In optics, when interferograms or digital holograms are recorded and their phase is recovered, it is common to obtain a wrapped phase with some errors, noise and artifacts such as singularities due to the non linearities of the demodulation process. This paper shows how to reconstruct the frequency field of the wrapped phase by using adaptive Gabor filters. Gabor filters are Gaussian quadrature filters tuned in at a certain frequency. We adapt these Gabor filters by tuning them locally and estimating the frequency using wrapped finite differences of the estimated phase. Doing this process iteratively, the frequency estimation is refined and smoothed. The unwrapped phase is easily recovered by integrating the recovered frequency field using, for example, a simple line raster integration. We don't have problems with phase inconsistencies or residues while integrating the phase, because these are removed. The obtained unwrapped phase is clean, consistent and practically error-free. We show estimation errors with simulated data and the performance of the proposed method using real-world recorded wavefronts.

A large number of mathematical models have been proposed to describe the measured signal in diffusion-weighted (DW) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, model comparison to date focuses only on specific subclasses, e.g. compartment models or signal models, and little or no information is available in the literature on how performance varies among the different types of models. To address this deficiency, we organized the 'White Matter Modeling Challenge' during the International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) 2015 conference. This competition aimed to compare a range of different kinds of models in their ability to explain a large range of measurable in vivo DW human brain data. Specifically, we assessed the ability of models to predict the DW signal accurately for new diffusion gradients and b values. We did not evaluate the accuracy of estimated model parameters, as a ground truth is hard to obtain. We used the Connectome scanner at the Massachusetts General Hospital, using gradient strengths of up to 300 mT/m and a broad set of diffusion times. We focused on assessing the DW signal prediction in two regions: the genu in the corpus callosum, where the fibres are relatively straight and parallel, and the fornix, where the configuration of fibres is more complex. The challenge participants had access to three-quarters of the dataset and their models were ranked on their ability to predict the remaining unseen quarter of the data. The challenge provided a unique opportunity for a quantitative comparison of diverse methods from multiple groups worldwide. The comparison of the challenge entries reveals interesting trends that could potentially influence the next generation of diffusion-based quantitative MRI techniques. The first is that signal models do not necessarily outperform tissue models; in fact, of those tested, tissue models rank highest on average. The second is that assuming a non-Gaussian (rather than purely Gaussian) noise model provides little improvement in prediction of unseen data, although it is possible that this may still have a beneficial effect on estimated parameter values. The third is that preprocessing the training data, here by omitting signal outliers, and using signal-predicting strategies, such as bootstrapping or cross-validation, could benefit the model fitting. The analysis in this study provides a benchmark for other models and the data remain available to build up a more complete comparison in the future.

This research assesses, in newborns, the hemodynamic response to acoustically modified syllables (pronounced in a prolonged manner), versus the response to unmodified syllables (pronounced at a normal rate). The aim was to assess which of these stimulation conditions produced better syllable discrimination in two groups of neonates: 13 preterm (mean gestational age 30 weeks, SD 3 weeks), and 13 full term newborns (mean age 38 weeks, SD 1 week). Syllable discrimination, in each condition, was assessed by using an oddball paradigm (equal syllable trials vs. different syllable trials). The statistical analysis was based on the comparison between the hemodynamic response [oxyHbO] obtained by Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) to different syllable trials vs. equal syllable trials, in each condition. The modified syllable condition was better in producing trial discrimination in both groups. The amplitude of the hemodynamic response to the different syllable trials was greater than the one to the equal syllable trials: for term infants, t = 2.59, p = 0.024, and for preterm t = 2.38, p = 0.035. This finding occurred in the left temporal lobe. These data suggest that the modified syllables facilitate processing of phonemes from birth.


Esta investigación evalúa, en neonatos, la respuesta hemodinámica ante sílabas modificadas acústicamente (pronunciadas de manera prolongada) en comparación con la respuesta a sílabas no modificadas (pronunciadas a una velocidad normal). El objetivo fue evaluar cuál de estas condiciones de estimulación producía una mejor discriminación silábica en dos grupos de neonatos: 13 prematuros (edad gestacional promedio de 30 semanas, DE 3 semanas) y 13 nacidos a término (edad gestacional promedio de 38 semanas, DE 1 semana). La discriminación de sílabas, en cada condición, se evaluó mediante un paradigma oddball (ensayos con sílabas iguales vs. ensayos con sílaba diferente). El análisis estadístico se basó en la comparación de la respuesta hemodinámica [oxyHb] obtenida por espectroscopia de infrarrojo cercano (NIRS) ante ensayos con sílabas iguales Vs. ensayos con una sílaba diferente en cada condición. RESUMO

In this paper we propose an approach for the extraction of features that differentiate two populations or two experimental conditions in a neurophysiological experiment. These features consist of summarizing variables defined as total activity (e.g., total normalized log-power), computed over sets of sites in a discrete domain, such as the time-frequency-topography space. These sets are obtained as those that maximize the linear separation between the two populations, and the corresponding maps provide information that may complement that obtained by standard procedures, such as statistical parametric mapping. It is shown experimentally, using both simulated and real data, that the proposed approach may provide useful information even when the standard procedures fail, due to the conservative nature of the multiple comparison correction that must be applied in the later case.

Learning disabilities (LD) are one of the most frequent problems for elementary school-aged children. In this paper, event-related EEG oscillations to semantically related and unrelated pairs of words were studied in a group of 18 children with LD not otherwise specified (LD-NOS) and in 16 children with normal academic achievement. We propose that EEG oscillations may be different in LD NOS children versus normal control children that may explain some of the deficits observed in the LD-NOS group. The EEGs were recorded using the 10/20 system. EEG segments were edited by visual inspection 1000ms before and after the stimulus, and only correct responses were considered in the analysis. Time-frequency (1-50Hz) topographic maps were obtained for the increases and decreases of power after the event with respect to the pre-stimulus average values. Significant differences between groups were observed in the behavioral responses. LD-NOS children show less number of correct responses and more omissions and false alarms than the control group. The event-induced EEG responses showed significant differences between groups. The control group showed greater power increases in the frequencies 1-6Hz than the LD-NOS group from 300 to 700ms. These differences were mainly observed in frontal regions, both to related and non-related words. This was interpreted as a deficit in attention, both to internal and external events, deficits in activation of working memory and deficits in encoding and memory retrieval in the LD-NOS children. Differences between groups were also observed in the suppression of alpha and beta rhythms in the occipital regions to related words in frequencies between 8 and 17Hz from 450 to 750ms. LD-NOS children showed shorter durations of the decreases in power than the control group. These results suggest also deficits in attention and memory retrieval. It may be concluded that LD-NOS children showed physiological differences from normal children that may explain their cognitive deficiencies.

A new method for detecting activations in random fields, which may be useful for addressing the issue of multiple comparisons in neuroimaging, is presented. This method is based on some constructs of mathematical morphology--specifically, morphological erosions and dilations--that enable the detection of active regions in random fields possessing moderate activation levels and relatively large spatial extension, which may not be detected by the standard methods that control the family-wise error rate. The method presented here permits an appropriate control of the false positive errors, without having to adjust any threshold values, other than the significance level. The method is easily adapted to permutation-based procedures (with the usual restrictions), and therefore does not require strong assumptions about the distribution and spatio-temporal correlation structure of the data. Some examples of applications to synthetic data, including realistic fMRI simulations, as well as to real fMRI and electroencephalographic data are presented, illustrating the power of the presented technique. Comparisons with other methods that combine voxel intensity and cluster size, as well as some extensions of the method presented here based on their basic ideas are presented as well.

This paper presents a new method for the reconstruction of current sources for the electroencephalography (EEG) inverse problem, which produces reconstructed sources, which are confined to a few anatomical regions. The method is based on a partition of the gray matter into a set of regions, and in the construction of a simple linear model for the potential produced by feasible source configurations inside each one of these regions. The proposed method computes the solution in two stages: in the first one, a subset of active regions is found so that the combined potentials produced by sources inside them approximate the measured potential data. In the second stage, a detailed reconstruction of the current sources inside each active region is performed. Experimental results with synthetic data are presented, which show that the proposed scheme is fast, computationally efficient and robust to noise, producing results that are competitive with other published methods, especially when the current sources are effectively distributed in few anatomical regions. The proposed method is also validated with real data from an experiment with visual evoked potentials.

Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) are specialized type I IFN producers, which play an important role in pathogenesis of autoimmune disorders. Dysregulated autoreactive B cell activation is a hallmark in most autoimmune diseases. This study was undertaken to investigate interactions between pDCs and autoreactive B cells. After coculture of autoreactive B cells that recognize self-Ag small nuclear ribonucleoprotein particles with activated pDCs, we found that pDCs significantly enhance autoreactive B cell proliferation, autoantibody production, and survival in response to TLR and BCR stimulation. Neutralization of IFN-alpha/beta and IL-6 abrogated partially pDC-mediated enhancement of autoreactive B cell activation. Transwell studies demonstrated that pDCs could provide activation signals to autoreactive B cells via a cell-to-cell contact manner. The involvement of the ICAM-1-LFA-1 pathway was revealed as contributing to this effect. This in vitro enhancement effect was further demonstrated by an in vivo B cell adoptive transfer experiment, which showed that autoreactive B cell proliferation and activation were significantly decreased in MyD88-deficient mice compared with wild-type mice. These data suggest the dynamic interplay between pDCs and B cells is required for full activation of autoreactive B cells upon TLR or BCR stimulation.

Induced changes in electroencephalographic power and synchrony between pairs of electrodes were assessed during the Go/No-Go task in 15 young adults. Processes common to both conditions, such as attention, activation of working memory, letter identification, and discrimination processes were characterized by increased power and synchrony in the following frequency ranges: delta band (inhibition of the non-relevant stimuli), theta band (activation of working memory), and low alpha band in occipital regions immediately after the stimulus (withhold or control of the execution of a response), and decreased power in the high alpha band from 300 to 700 ms. However, the most important findings were those specific for each condition. Changes in power in frontal areas were observed immediately after the stimulus in delta and high alpha bands for the Go condition and in the theta band for the No-Go condition. Increased synchrony and power at 1 Hz from 350-500 ms and increased power at 1, 5 and 6 Hz after 300 ms in the No-Go condition may be related to inhibition. Other important difference between conditions was observed in the synchronization increases of the gamma band between 33 and 36 Hz in the Go condition, whereas synchrony decreased at these frequencies in the No-Go condition; these differences may be due to the preparation and execution of the motor response during the Go condition and its inhibition in the No-Go condition.
