RESUMO

Black liquor (BL) is the major bioproduct and biomass fuel in pulp mill processes. However, the high viscosity of BL makes it a challenging material to work with, resulting in issues with evaporators and heat exchangers during its transport and processing. The thermal and rheological properties of BLs from Pinus sp. (PBL) and Eucalyptus sp. (EBL) were studied. FTIR spectra revealed the presence of the characteristic functional groups and the chemical composition in liquors. TGA/DTG curves showed three characteristic degradation stages related to evaporation of water, pyrolysis of organic groups, and condensation of char. Rheologically, liquors are classified as non-Newtonian and with comportment pseudoplastic. Their rheological dynamic shear properties included a linear viscoelastic region up to 1% shear strain, while frequency sweeps showed that storage modulus (G') > loss modulus (G''), thus confirming the solid-like behavior of both BLs. The rheological study demonstrated that increasing the temperature and oscillatory deformations of PBL and EBL decreased their degree of viscoelasticity, which could favor their pumping and handling within the pulp mill, as well as the droplet formation and swelling characteristics in the recovery furnace.

RESUMO

Proper management of wastewater treatment plant side streams in pulp and paper mills is a matter of great interest. This study evaluates the environmental impact of different strategies in the management of biosludge from pulp and paper mills in Finland through a Life Cycle Assessment methodology. The base industrial standard practice, biosludge incineration for energy recovery and ash landfill disposal (Scenario 1), was compared to the alternative process of hydrothermal carbonization. The hydrochar generated from hydrothermal carbonization was evaluated for energy recovery through incineration (Scenario 2), or for use in composting for nutrient recovery (Scenario 3). The results showed that the hydrothermal process improved the overall environmental performance of the sludge management, particularly in terms of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The use of hydrochar as a soil amendment in composting also resulted in a significant reduction on the environmental impact compared to the other two scenarios. Overall, this study highlights the potential of hydrothermal carbonization and hydrochar utilization as sustainable options for managing biosludge from pulp mills.

RESUMO

Background: This study aims to present a case of deep cervicofacial abscesses and demonstrate the efficacy of CT-guided drainage with a custom-designed puncture guide in a challenging anatomical location. The use of this type of guide is an innovative technique since CAD-CAM technology has not been used for this type of application until now. Material and Methods: A 76-year-old man with persistent facial swelling and trismus underwent surgical drainage initially, but symptoms persisted. A CT-guided transcutaneous approach was planned using a custom-designed positioning guide created with "in-house" 3D technology. The guide was fabricated using Surgical Guide resin, and the patient underwent successful CT-guided drainage. Results: The intervention facilitated precise drainage without damaging critical anatomical structures. The patient exhibited prompt clinical improvement, shortened hospitalization, and favorable aesthetic outcomes. Conclusions: CT-guided drainage, particularly when combined with a custom puncture guide, offers a less invasive alternative for challenging cervicofacial abscesses. This approach proves valuable in reducing procedure duration, minimizing soft tissue trauma, and enhancing preoperative planning, making it especially beneficial for patients with high anesthetic risk or complex anatomical considerations. Key words:Cervical abscess, 3D technology, drainage guide, percutaneous puncture.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Prenatal folate exposure may alter epigenetic marks in the offspring. We aimed to evaluate associations between prenatal exposure to folic acid (FA) in preconception and in utero with cord blood DNA methylation in long interspersed nuclear element 1 (LINE-1) and Alu short interspersed nuclear elements (SINEs) as markers of global DNA methylation levels. METHODS: Data come from 325 mother-child pairs participating in the Nutrition in Early Life and Asthma (NELA) birth cohort (2015-2018). Pregnant women were asked about supplement use, including brand name and dose, one month before pregnancy (preconception) and through the trimesters of pregnancy. Maternal dietary folate intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire with additional questions for FA supplement use. Folate serum levels were measured in mothers at 24 weeks of gestation and in cord blood of newborns. DNA methylation was quantitatively assessed by bisulfite pyrosequencing on 5 LINE-1 and 3 Alu different elements. Associations were estimated using multivariable linear regression models. RESULTS: A reduction in methylation levels of LINE-1 in newborns was associated with the use of FA supplements below the recommended doses (<400 ug/day) during preconception (-0.50; 95% CI: -0.91, -0.09; P = 0.016), and from preconception up to 12 weeks of gestation (-0.48; 95% CI: -0.88, -0.08; P = 0.018). Maternal use of FA supplements above the tolerable upper intake level of 1000 ug/day from preconception until 12 weeks of gestation was also related to lower methylation in LINE-1 at birth (-0.77; 95% CI: -1.52, -0.02; P = 0.044). Neither FA supplement use after 12 weeks of gestation nor maternal total folate intake (diet plus supplements) were associated with global DNA methylation levels at birth. CONCLUSIONS: Maternal non-compliance with the use of FA supplement recommendations from preconception up to 12 weeks of gestation reduces offspring global DNA methylation levels at birth.

RESUMO

Acetolactate synthase inhibitors (ALS inhibitors) and glyphosate are two classes of herbicides that act by inhibiting an enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway of branched-chain or aromatic amino acids, respectively. Besides amino acid synthesis inhibition, both herbicides trigger similar physiological effects in plants. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the role of glutathione metabolism, with special emphasis on glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), in the mode of action of glyphosate and ALS inhibitors in Amaranthus palmeri. For that purpose, plants belonging to a glyphosate-sensitive (GLS) and a glyphosate-resistant (GLR) population were treated with different doses of glyphosate, and plants belonging to an ALS-inhibitor sensitive (AIS) and an ALS-inhibitor resistant (AIR) population were treated with different doses of the ALS inhibitor nicosulfuron. Glutathione-related contents, GST activity, and related gene expressions (glutamate-cysteine ligase, glutathione reductase, Phi GST and Tau GST) were analysed in leaves. According to the results of the analytical determinations, there were virtually no basal differences between GLS and GLR plants or between AIS and AIR plants. Glutathione synthesis and turnover did not follow a clear pattern in response to herbicides, but GST activity and gene expression (especially Phi GSTs) increased with both herbicides in treated sensitive plants, possibly related to the rocketing H2O2 accumulation. As GSTs offered the clearest results, these were further investigated with a multiple resistant (MR) population, compressing target-site resistance to both glyphosate and the ALS inhibitor pyrithiobac. As in single-resistant plants, measured parameters in the MR population were unaffected by herbicides, meaning that the increase in GST activity and expression occurs due to herbicide interactions with the target enzymes.

RESUMO

The advent of 3D surgical technology has revolutionized personalized medicine, enabling the development of tailored solutions for individual patients. This technical note presents the application of 3D technology in designing a customized chin guard using flexible 3D resin. The process involves surface scanning the lower facial region of a polytraumatized patient with a structured-light surface 3D scanner, generating a detailed point cloud. The acquired data undergoes meticulous processing within an specific professional software, including erasing unwanted portions, aligning frames, and mesh consolidation. Subsequently, the mesh is exported as an STL file and further refined using a 3D mesh management software. A customized chin support is designed for the specific patient's needs, exported in STL format, and 3D printed using a stereolithography (SLA) printer with Flexible 80A resin. Post-printing procedures involve washing and curing to ensure biocompatibility and optimal mechanical characteristics. The resultant customized chin guard, attached to elastic support straps, offers a precise fit to the patient's anatomy, enhancing comfort and allowing for extended wear. This innovative approach addresses the challenge of surgical intraoral wound dehiscence in a polytraumatized patient, showcasing the potential of 3D technology in personalized medical solutions for complex cases. Key words:Surface scanner, 3D surgery, customized surgery, chinstrap.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Identify urinary catheter (UC)-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) incidence and risk factors (RF) in Latin American Countries. METHODS: From 01/01/2014 to 02/10/2022, we conducted a prospective cohort study in 145 ICUs of 67 hospitals in 35 cities in nine Latin American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, and Peru. To estimate CAUTI incidence, we used the number of UC-days as the denominator, and the number of CAUTIs as numerator. To estimate CAUTI RFs, we analyzed the following 10 variables using multiple logistic regression: gender, age, length of stay (LOS) before CAUTI acquisition, UC-days before CAUTI acquisition, UC-device utilization (DU) ratio, UC-type, hospitalizationtype, ICU type, facility ownership, and time period. RESULTS: 31,631 patients, hospitalized for 214,669 patient-days, acquired 305 CAUTIs. The pooled CAUTI rate per 1000 UC-days was 2.58, for those using suprapubic catheters, it was 2.99, and for those with indwelling catheters, it was 2.21. The following variables were independently associated with CAUTI: age, rising risk 1% yearly (aOR = 1.01; 95% CI 1.01-1.02; p < 0.0001 female gender (aOR = 1.28; 95% CI 1.01-1.61; p = 0.04), LOS before CAUTI acquisition, rising risk 7% daily (aOR = 1.07; 95% CI 1.06-1.08; p < 0.0001, UC/DU ratio (aOR = 1.14; 95% CI 1.08-1.21; p < 0.0001, public facilities (aOR = 2.89; 95% CI 1.75-4.49; p < 0.0001. The periods 2014-2016 and 2017-2019 had significantly higher risks than the period 2020-2022. Suprapubic catheters showed similar risks as indwelling catheters. CONCLUSION: The following CAUTI RFs are unlikely to change: age, gender, hospitalization type, and facility ownership. Based on these findings, it is suggested to focus on reducing LOS, UC/DU ratio, and implementing evidence-based CAUTI prevention recommendations.

RESUMO

Maternal microbiota forms the first infant gut microbial inoculum, and perinatal factors (diet and use of antibiotics during pregnancy) and/or neonatal factors, like intra partum antibiotics, gestational age and mode of delivery, may influence microbial colonization. After birth, when the principal colonization occurs, the microbial diversity increases and converges toward a stable adult-like microbiota by the end of the first 3-5 years of life. However, during the early life, gut microbiota can be disrupted by other postnatal factors like mode of infant feeding, antibiotic usage, and various environmental factors generating a state of dysbiosis. Gut dysbiosis have been reported to increase the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis and some chronic diseases later in life, such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, allergies, and asthma. Therefore, understanding the impact of a correct maternal-to-infant microbial transfer and a good infant early colonization and maturation throughout life would reduce the risk of disease in early and late life. This paper reviews the published evidence on early-life gut microbiota development, as well as the different factors influencing its evolution before, at, and after birth, focusing on diet and nutrition during pregnancy and in the first months of life.

RESUMO

Depleted Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (DMAPSs) are foreseen as an interesting choice for future high-energy physics experiments, mainly because of the reduced fabrication costs. However, they generally offer limited time resolution due to the stringent requirements of area and power consumption imposed by the targeted spatial resolution. This work describes a methodology to optimize the design of time-to-digital converter (TDC)-based timing electronics that takes advantage of the asymmetrical shape of the pulse at the output of the analog front-end (AFE). Following that methodology, a power and area efficient implementation fully compatible with the RD50-MPW3 solution is proposed. Simulation results show that the proposed solution offers a time resolution of 2.08 ns for a range of energies from 1000 e- to 20,000 e-, with minimum area and zero quiescent in-pixel power consumption.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Most of the pregnant women do not achieve the recommended dietary intake of vitamins A and E. These vitamins may counteract oxidative stress involved in some adverse perinatal outcomes. We aimed to assess the associations between maternal vitamin A and E at mid-pregnancy with both maternal and fetal outcomes and to identify possible early biomarkers during pregnancy to predict and prevent oxidative stress in the offspring. METHODS: Data on dietary and serum levels of vitamins A and E were collected from 544 pregnant women from the Nutrition in Early Life and Asthma (NELA) study, a prospective mother-child cohort set up in Spain. RESULTS: There were large discrepancies between low dietary vitamin E intake (78% of the mothers) and low serum vitamin E levels (3%) at 24 weeks of gestation. Maternal serum vitamins A and E at mid-pregnancy were associated with higher antioxidant status not only in the mother at this time point (lower hydroperoxides and higher total antioxidant activity [TAA]) but also with the newborn at birth (higher TAA). Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) was negatively associated with maternal serum vitamin A (OR: 0.95 CI: 0.91-0.99, p = 0.009) at mid-pregnancy. Nevertheless, we could not detect any association between GDM and oxidative stress parameters. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, maternal vitamin A and E serum levels may be used as an early potential biomarker of antioxidant status of the neonate at birth. Control of these vitamins during pregnancy could help avoid morbid conditions in the newborn caused by oxidative stress in GDM pregnancies.

RESUMO

Data integration to align cells across batches has become a cornerstone of single cell data analysis, critically affecting downstream results. Yet, how much biological signal is erased during integration? Currently, there are no guidelines for when the biological differences between samples are separable from batch effects, and thus, data integration usually involve a lot of guesswork: Cells across batches should be aligned to be "appropriately" mixed, while preserving "main cell type clusters". We show evidence that current paradigms for single cell data integration are unnecessarily aggressive, removing biologically meaningful variation. To remedy this, we present a novel statistical model and computationally scalable algorithm, CellANOVA, to recover biological signal that is lost during single cell data integration. CellANOVA utilizes a "pool-of-controls" design concept, applicable across diverse settings, to separate unwanted variation from biological variation of interest. When applied with existing integration methods, CellANOVA allows the recovery of subtle biological signals and corrects, to a large extent, the data distortion introduced by integration. Further, CellANOVA explicitly estimates cell- and gene-specific batch effect terms which can be used to identify the cell types and pathways exhibiting the largest batch variations, providing clarity as to which biological signals can be recovered. These concepts are illustrated on studies of diverse designs, where the biological signals that are recovered by CellANOVA are shown to be validated by orthogonal assays. In particular, we show that CellANOVA is effective in the challenging case of single-cell and single-nuclei data integration, where the recovered biological signals are replicated in an independent study.

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death worldwide. They are stronglyinfluenced by some risk factors (RF), some of them modifiable with changes in lifestyle. Of all the RFs, oneof the most prevalent in the population is arterial hypertension (AHT), defined by blood pressure values≥140-90mmHg. Objectives: Know the relationship between HTA and the rest RF with the development of different CVDs,identify the ideal threshold to avoid overdiagnosis and overtreatment of HTN, and recognize the importanceof good lifestyle habits as prevention. Results and Discussion: In the study by FÉLIX-REDONDO et al. it was shown that the most influential RFin CVD was AHT. However, this may vary according to age, as observed by VERA-REMARTÍNEZ et al. withhis study, whose mean age was 30 years, and the most prevalent factor was tobacco. The control of lifestylehabits that help reduce both hypertension and the rest of the factors will be beneficial for the primary andsecondary prevention of CVD. To avoid overly intensive treatment, a stepwise approach is recommended, starting with prevention goals for all patients, regardless of risk, followed by CVD risk stratification anddiscussion of the potential benefits of treatment with the patient. Conclusions: CVD, specifically ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular diseases, are the main causeof death in the world, so it is very important to control those RFs that accelerate their appearance. The mostprevalent of them is high blood pressure.(AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to identify central line (CL)-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) rates and risk factors in Latin-America. METHODS: From January 1, 2014 to February 10, 2022, we conducted a multinational multicenter prospective cohort study in 58 ICUs of 34 hospitals in 21 cities in 8 Latin American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama). We applied multiple-logistic regression. Outcomes are shown as adjusted-odds ratios (aOR). RESULTS: About 29,385 patients were hospitalized during 92,956 days, acquired 400 CLABSIs, and pooled CLABSI rate was 4.30 CLABSIs per 1,000 CL-days. We analyzed following 10 variables: Gender, age, length of stay (LOS) before CLABSI acquisition, CL-days before CLABSI acquisition, CL-device utilization (DU) ratio, CL-type, tracheostomy use, hospitalization type, intensive care unit (ICU) type, and facility ownership, Following variables were independently associated with CLABSI: LOS before CLABSI acquisition, rising risk 3% daily (aOR=1.03;95%CI=1.02-1.04; P < .0001); number of CL-days before CLABSI acquisition, rising risk 4% per CL-day (aOR=1.04;95%CI=1.03-1.05; P < .0001); publicly-owned facility (aOR=2.33;95%CI=1.79-3.02; P < .0001). ICU with highest risk was medical-surgical (aOR=2.61;95%CI=1.41-4.81; P < .0001). CL with the highest risk were femoral (aOR=2.71;95%CI=1.61-4.55; P < .0001), and internal-jugular (aOR=2.62;95%CI=1.82-3.79; P < .0001). PICC (aOR=1.25;95%CI=0.63-2.51; P = .52) was not associated with CLABSI risk. CONCLUSIONS: Based on these findings it is suggested to focus on reducing LOS, CL-days, using PICC instead of femoral or internal-jugular; and implementing evidence-based CLABSI prevention recommendations.

RESUMO

Besides long-term average temperature increases, climate change is projected to result in a higher frequency of marine heatwaves. Coastal zones are some of the most productive and vulnerable ecosystems, with many stretches already under anthropogenic pressure. Microorganisms in coastal areas are central to marine energy and nutrient cycling and therefore, it is important to understand how climate change will alter these ecosystems. Using a long-term heated bay (warmed for 50 years) in comparison with an unaffected adjacent control bay and an experimental short-term thermal (9 days at 6-35 °C) incubation experiment, this study provides new insights into how coastal benthic water and surface sediment bacterial communities respond to temperature change. Benthic bacterial communities in the two bays reacted differently to temperature increases with productivity in the heated bay having a broader thermal tolerance compared with that in the control bay. Furthermore, the transcriptional analysis showed that the heated bay benthic bacteria had higher transcript numbers related to energy metabolism and stress compared to the control bay, while short-term elevated temperatures in the control bay incubation experiment induced a transcript response resembling that observed in the heated bay field conditions. In contrast, a reciprocal response was not observed for the heated bay community RNA transcripts exposed to lower temperatures indicating a potential tipping point in community response may have been reached. In summary, long-term warming modulates the performance, productivity, and resilience of bacterial communities in response to warming.

(AU)

Introduction: Anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) is a premalignant lesion of anal squamous cell carcinoma. HIV-positive males who have sex with males, are the most affected at-risk population. Cytology and anuscopy are the best accepted methods for its diagnosis, although it is controversial which patients should complete it with a biopsy. Neither which patients should undergo treatment nor which is the best treatment is not well established. With this study, we would like to present our experience in the diagnostic-therapeutic management of AIN in the short term. Methods: Retrospective observational study of patients at risk of AIN with altered anal cytology who underwent high-resolution anuscopy with biopsy. After histological confirmation of dysplasia, they started treatment with trichloroacetic acid. Its effectiveness was verified by subsequent cytology. The demographic variables of the sample and the results of both diagnostic and treatment tests were analyzed. Results: The majority were HIV-positive males (104/115) and 50% had sexual relations with other men. We included 115 patients with altered anal cytology, of whom 92% had dysplasia on biopsy. 97% with atypia of uncertain significance on cytology had histological dysplasia. Cytology normalized after treatment in 60% of patients. Conclusion: Early detection of AIN should be routinely considered in known at-risk populations. Any cytological abnormality should be biopsied. Tricholoroacetic acid can be an effective treatment achieving a high percentage of regression, although currently, the information we have is of low level of evidence. (AU)

RESUMO

The versatile hybrid perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are one of the most promising materials for optoelectronics by virtue of their tunable bandgaps and high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields. However, their inherent crystalline chemical structure limits the chiroptical properties achievable with the material. The production of chiral perovskites has become an active field of research for its promising applications in optics, chemistry, or biology. Typically, chiral halide perovskites are obtained by the incorporation of different chiral moieties in the material. Unfortunately, these chemically modified perovskites have demonstrated moderate values of chiral PL so far. Here, a general and scalable approach is introduced to produce chiral PL from arbitrary nanoemitters assembled into 2D-chiral metasurfaces. The fabrication via nanoimprinting lithography employs elastomeric molds engraved with chiral motifs covering millimeter areas that are used to pattern two types of unmodified colloidal perovskite NC inks: green-emissive CsPbBr3 and red-emissive CsPbBr1 I2 . The perovskite 2D-metasurfaces exhibit remarkable PL dissymmetry factors (glum ) of 0.16 that can be further improved up to glum of 0.3 by adding a high-refractive-index coating on the metasurfaces. This scalable approach to produce chiral photoluminescent thin films paves the way for the seamless production of bright chiral light sources for upcoming optoelectronic applications.
